VANNOY, CORNELIUS
(CAMILLUS) R, Co I, private/sergeant, enlisted for 3 years
at Union City, TN
on 11/23/63 and mustered
at Nashville, TN on 7/29/65 at age 29. He
was
6’1”/6’2 ½” tall, fair complexion,
blue or dark eyes, dark or auburn or light hair, a grocer, born in
Green Co, KY. Appointed a sergeant on
12/25/63, he is
presumed captured with the regiment at Union City,
TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville
Prison in Georgia. On 2/25/65 when
Colonel
O’Neal of the
Confederate Army offered release from prison to those who would
join
the
Confederate Army, Vannoy accepted. He
managed to escape to Union lines, however, and mustered out with
the
regiment
at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. He
applied for and received
an invalid pension in the 1880s while living in Tennessee.
Vannoy died on 6/14/1916. His widow, Mary M Vannoy,
applied for a pension on 7/6/1916 while living in Kentucky. Vannoy appears
to be the son of Russell B
Vannoy of Kentucky. MR #1805
VAUGHN, M(ATTHEW)
H(ENRY) C, Co G, private, a Carroll Co, TN resident who
enlisted for 1
year in
Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 18. He
was
wounded in the battle of Lexington in December 1862 but returned
to duty on 5/16/63. Vaughn
was one of the 100 or more men who went AWOL from the forts on the
Mississippi/Tennessee line in June 1863.
He left Grand Junction, TN on 6/10/63 and returned to
duty on 10/13/63. He applied for and received
an invalid pension in 1886 and died on 12/18/1906 in
Kentucky. His wife applied for a widow's
pension. Vaughn was the son of
Mathew and Mary Vaughan of Carroll Co, TN, a couple from Virginia
who
owned 3
slaves in 1860. MR #1807
VETEK (VETETO),
ALBERT J, Companies M & C, private, enlisted for 3 years
in
Adamsville, TN
on 7/1/63 at age 20. He was 5’6”
tall,
fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in
Henderson Co,
TN. He furnished his own horse and
equipment and
received a $100 bounty for enlistment. Presumed
captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on
3/24/64, he spent time in
Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Veteto
was
paroled through Savannah
and Charleston on 11/25/64, taken to the
hospital in Annapolis, Maryland, and then furloughed for 30 days
on
1/3/65. He was discharged with the
regiment at Nashville
on 8/9/65. Veteto’s widow, Sarah A,
applied for a pension in 1873. Minor
sons
were placed under the guardianship
of J. H. Stegall and received minors’ pension. Veteto
appears to be the son of Jeremiah and
Mary E Veteto of Henderson Co, TN. MR #1810
VIAR (VIA), SIMPSON
H(ARPER), Co C, private, enlisted for 3 years at Union City,
TN on
12/19/63 and
mustered there the next day at age 22. He
received
a $100 bounty for enlistment.
Via was 5’10” tall, dark complexion, grey eyes, dark hair,
a
farmer,
born in Rutherford Co, TN (2/17/43). It
appears
that he was recruited into Co B 13th/14th
TN
Cavalry and was only in the 7th Tennessee when his
regiment was
defeated at Fort Pillow, TN. He later
was in
Co E of the 6th TN
Cavalry, as were most of the men of the 13th/14th
who
were temporarily in the 7th Tennessee.
He was a bugler in that regiment.
Via married Mary Jane Glascow. In
1897
he applied for an invalid pension. In
the 1900 census he was widowed and living
in Dyer Co, TN. He appears to have
been
the son of Menoah and Polly Blankenship Via of Carroll Co,

VICKERS, FRANCIS M(ARION),
Companies A & I, private, enlisted and mustered at Paducah, KY
on
10/20/64 at
age 24. He was a resident of
Brimfield, IL
at the time of enlistment. Vickers
was
5’8” tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, a farmer, born
in
Chesterfield, SC. He transferred to
Co I
by February 1865 and
mustered out with the regiment at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.
He applied for an invalid pension
in March of 1878 but it was denied.
Vickers is buried in Liberty All Cemetery
in Carroll Co, TN. He has a military
marker but there are no dates. He
appears to have died in the 1880s. His widow, Eliza Caroline Hogwood, applied
for
and received a pension in July 1890.
Vickers appears to be the son of William and Jane
Vickers. MR #1813
VICKERS, THOMAS J(EFFERSON), Company F, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/8/62 at age 18 with the consent of his parents, Alexander R and Nancy Vickers. He mustered out of the 7th Tennessee at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63 at the end of his one year enlistment and joined Co M, 12th Tennessee Cavalry as a sergeant on 8/12/64. Vickers married Texas Paralee Battles in Gibson Co, TN. He applied for an invalid pension while living in Gibson Co, TN near the Dyer Post Office. He is buried in the Battle-Keely Cemetery in Gibson Co, TN and has a military maker but it has no dates.
