VANNOY, CORNELIUS (CAMILLUS) R, Co I, private/sergeant, enlisted for 3 years at Union City, TN on 11/23/63 and mustered at Nashville, TN on 7/29/65 at age 29.  He was 6’1”/6’2 ½” tall, fair complexion, blue or dark eyes, dark or auburn or light hair, a grocer, born in Green Co, KY.  Appointed a sergeant on 12/25/63, he is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia.  On 2/25/65 when Colonel O’Neal of the Confederate Army offered release from prison to those who would join the Confederate Army, Vannoy accepted.  He managed to escape to Union lines, however, and mustered out with the regiment at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.  He applied for and received an invalid pension in the 1880s while living in Tennessee.  Vannoy died on 6/14/1916.  His widow, Mary M Vannoy, applied for a pension on 7/6/1916 while living in Kentucky.  Vannoy appears to be the son of Russell B Vannoy of Kentucky.  MR #1805

VAUGHN, M(ATTHEW) H(ENRY) C, Co G, private, a Carroll Co, TN resident who enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 18.  He was wounded in the battle of Lexington in December 1862 but returned to duty on 5/16/63.  Vaughn was one of the 100 or more men who went AWOL from the forts on the Mississippi/Tennessee line in June 1863.  He left Grand Junction, TN on 6/10/63 and returned to duty on 10/13/63.  He applied for and received an invalid pension in 1886 and died on 12/18/1906 in Kentucky.  His wife applied for a widow's pension.  Vaughn was the son of Mathew and Mary Vaughan of Carroll Co, TN, a couple from Virginia who owned 3 slaves in 1860.  MR #1807

VIAR (VIA), SIMPSON H(ARPER), Co C, private, enlisted for 3 years at Union City, TN on 12/19/63 and mustered there the next day at age 22.  He received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Via was 5’10” tall, dark complexion, grey eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Rutherford Co, TN (2/17/43).  It appears that he was recruited into Co B 13th/14th TN Cavalry and was only in the 7th Tennessee when his regiment was defeated at Fort Pillow, TN.  He later was in Co E of the 6th TN Cavalry, as were most of the men of the 13th/14th who were temporarily in the 7th Tennessee.  He was a bugler in that regiment.  Via married Mary Jane Glascow.  In 1897 he applied for an invalid pension.  In the 1900 census he was widowed and living in Dyer Co, TN.  He appears to have been the son of Menoah and Polly Blankenship Via of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1811
