Co, TN. Promoted to corporal on
12/1/64, he deserted
on 6/2/65 at Paducah, KY. This was
removed in
1885 at the time he
applied for an invalid pension. His wife was Missouri E
Nance. Nance die in Graves Co, KY on 11/22/1925 and is
buried in the Lassiter Cemetery. MR #1236
NEALY, JAMES W,
Co C, private/sergeant, enlisted by Lieutenant Gregory at Paducah,
KY
on 8/18/63 at age 29. He was 5’11”
tall,
dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Illinois.
He was due a bounty. He might
be
the same James W Neely in Co F of the 1st Alabama with
wife Mary E Nealy. MR #1238
NEELY, COLUMBUS C,
Co F, private, enlisted by Lieutenant Hawkins at Trenton, TN on
9/24/62 and
mustered same
day at age 26/27. He was 5’8” tall,
fair
complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co,
TN. Captured at Trenton,
TN on 12/20/62, Neely spent time in parole camp
at Camp Chase
in Ohio. He was sent to Nashville,
TN to be mustered out from his 1 year
enlistment on 9/1/63 and was officially dismissed at Saulsbury, TN
on 10/25/63. He re-enlisted in Co F
of
the 12th TN Cavalry USA.
Neely applied for an invalid pension in
1890
while living in Arkansas. His wife,
Solona
M Neely, applied for a
widow’s pension, also from Arkansas.
The pensions were under the name “Christopher C
Neely.” MR #1240
NEELY, JAMES MATT,
Companies M, C & A, 1st lieutenant, enlisted for 3 years
in
Clarksburg, TN on 7/6/63 at age 24 (b. 9/11/1839).
He seems to have volunteered on 2/16/62 in Co
D 5th Iowa Cavalry before the Tennessee
units were formed, then transferred to the 7th Tennessee. He received his commission as 1st
Lieutenant of Company M from the Governor of Tennessee on 2/1/64,
but
had been
elected 1st Lieutenant on 12/21//63.
He was not captured with the regiment at Union City, TN
in March 1864. Neely was present in
July
and August of 1864 as part of Co A and was present in Paducah, KY
in the spring of 1865. At some point
he was
thrown from his horse and paralyzed. He
mustered
out with the regiment at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.
Elected Sheriff of Carroll Co, TN in 1868, he
later became a Tennessee
legislator in the 45th session.
Neely joined Isaac R Hawkins Post #58 of the Grand Army of
the Republic (GAR). He applied for an
invalid pension
in 1873. Neely died on 10/16/1905 and
is
buried in the Antioch Cemetery #2 in Carroll
Co, TN. His wife, Mary Elizabeth
Hester
Neely, applied for a widow’s pension in 1905.
They were residents of Huntingdon, TN. MR #1241
NEIGHBORS, HENRY,
Company E, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon,
TN on 6/28/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN
on 9/4/62 at about age 30. A resident
of Carroll Co, TN in 1860, he furnished
his own horse and equipment. Neighbors
had
the misfortune to be sick in a hospital outside the fort walls at
Paducah, KY when Forrest’s
troops attacked Paducah
on 3/25/64. Taken prisoner and sent
to
Andersonville Prison in Georgia,
he died of scrobutus on 9/28/64. His
widow, Nancy Breechen Neighbors, married James E. Carden, a
veteran of
Co E, in
1865. His brother, Elijah Neighbors
of
the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry USA, died in the hospital at
St.
Louis, MO
on 1/2/63 and his brother John Ashley Neighbors died in
Andersonville
Prison. MR #1243

Co I, private, enlisted for 3 years in Carroll Co, TN on 9/15/63
and
mustered in Union City, TN
on 12/15/64. He furnished his own
horse
and equipment. He is presumed
captured
with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to
Andersonville Prison in Georgia where

8/5/62 and
mustered in Benton Co, TN on 8/17/62 at about age 28 (census). He furnished his own horse and
equipment. Assumed to have been
captured
with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Neighbors died in
Andersonville Prison of rheumatismia on 2/12/65 and was buried in
grave
#12,642. The son of John and Eliza
Bryant Neighbors of Carroll Co, TN, he was married to Elizabeth F
M
Blount
Neighbors. His brother, Elijah
Neighbors
of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry USA, died in the hospital at St.
Louis, MO
on 1/2/63 and his brother Henry Neighbors died in Andersonville
Prison
on
9/28/64. His widow applied for a pension in 1867 and his
minor child applied later. MR #1245
NELSON, JOHN A,
Co I, private, enlisted for 3 years in Union City, TN on 8/25/64
and
mustered in Columbus, KY
on 8/25/64 at age 21. He was 6’ tall,
fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in McNairy
Co,
TN. His record says he transferred to
Co I
and
was on a list of escaped POWs from Mobile, AL.
He
was
discharged
with
the
regiment
when
it
disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. MR #1247
NELSON, ROBERT W,
Co C, private, enlisted in Paducah, KY on 8/19/63 by Lieutenant
Gregory and
mustered on 10/19/63 at age 22. Nelson
was
5’7 ½” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a
farmer,
born in Marshall, KY. There is no
further
information except that
he was present in May and June of 1864 which indicates he was not
captured with
the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64. MR #1248
NEWBILL, WILLIAM G, Co
I, private, enlisted by Lieutenant Murray for 1 year in Paducah,
KY on 1/6/65 at
age
19/20. He was 5’8” tall, dark
complexion,
dark eyes, black hair, a farmer. Newbill was
a refugee resident of Magnolia, IL at the time of his
enlistment. His
normal residence was McLemoresville, TN and Kitty Newbill was
listed
as a relative when he became ill. Discharged
early on
6/13/65 at Louisville, KY due to disability, he returned to
Carroll
Co, TN. He married M M Brown in 1872
but
was a widower with two children by the 1880 census.
Newbill became a tobacconist, joined the
Isaac R Hawkins Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post #58 in 1887
and was living near the Huntingdon, TN
Post Office in
the 1890 veteran’s census. He died at
Huntingdon, TN on 6/29/1918 and is buried
in the Union Academy Cemetery
with a military marker. MR #1249
NICELOR (NICELER/NEISLER),
ROBINSON M, Co A, enlisted for 3 years in Jackson, TN
on 8/28/62 at age 32. He furnished
his
own horse and equipment. The only
other
entry in his muster roll record says he was AWOL by 8/21/63. Niceler is also listed in Co A of the 7th
TN Infantry and might have records there. His mother applied
in 1881 for a pension on his service. MR #1251
NICHOLS (NICHLES), WILLIAM J, Co A, private, enlisted in Jackson, TN on 8/28/62 at age 26. He furnished his own horse and equipment. Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 8/20/64 of Ictus Solis. Nichols was buried in grave #6262 in the Andersonville National Cemetery. His mother applied for a pension on his service. MR #1253

along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment awaiting
exchange. Presumed captured with the
regiment at
Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Niceler was taken to Andersonville
Prison in Georgia where he died
there
on
2/15/65
of

NOLEN, REAL D, Co
C, blacksmith, enlisted by Lieutenant Grey at Paducah, KY on
9/17/63 and
mustered there
on 10/19/63 at age 44. He was 5’8”
tall,
dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, a blacksmith, born in
Edgefield
Co,
NC. He was one of the 19 men of the
13th/14th
Tennessee Cavalry who were not captured with their regiment at
Fort
Pillow on
4/12/64 who were temporarily attached to the 7th
Tennessee
detachment stationed at Columbus, KY in the summer of 1864. He is also listed under the name Rial D

NOLES, JAMES EDMOND,
Companies E, B & C, corporal, enlisted for 3 years in
Huntingdon,
TN on 7/25/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN
on 8/11/62 at age 37. He was 5’10”
tall,
dark complexion, blue eyes, black hair, a farmer, born in
Rockingham
Co, NC on
4/25/25. Captured and paroled with
the
regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862,
he most likely spent time in parole camp at Camp
Chase in Columbus, OH
along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment awaiting
exchange. Noles was not captured with
the regiment at
Union City, TN
on 3/24/64. He was in the hospital in
March and April of 1864. Present with
the detachment in May and June of 1864, Noles spent time in
Columbus,
KY
where a bunk fell and ran a nail through his heel.
He was discharged with the regiment when it
disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. He
joined
the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in 1887 and applied for an
invalid pension in 1890 while living in Benton Co,
TN. He died on 12/17/1897 and is
buried in
the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Benton Co, TN with a
military marker. His wife, Arena
(Perenemia?) Ann Roberts Noles, applied for a widow’s pension. Noles was the son of
William and Sarah Allen Noles. MR #1259

2/17/63-5/1/63. Nordon is presumed
captured with the regiment
at Union City, TN
on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he
died
on 5/5/64 of
Ulcus. One page has his name as
Worden
and another gives his name as either John N or John P
Nordon. His widow applied for a pension in 1870 and gave his
name as John N Nordon. MR #1262
NORVELL, WILLIAM R,
Companies B & A, private/2nd quartermaster sergeant,
enlisted for 3
years in Carroll Co, TN on 8/6/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on
8/11/62 at
either age 38/43/45 (all given). He
furnished his own horse and equipment. On
11/4/63
he was arrested in Illinois
while AWOL. Norvell was ill in
November/December 1864. His wife,
Louisa
C, was living near the Lincoln Green Post Office in Johnson Co,
IL.
He was discharged on 6/15/65 through Jeffersonville, IN,
which indicates he was in the hospital there.
Norvell was given travel expenses to Sandy Bridge
(Benton Co, TN?). He applied for an
invalid pension in 1883 while living in Arkansas.
His widow, Sarah E Norvell, applied for a pension in
1896, also from Arkansas. MR #1264
NORWOOD, THOMAS J(EFFERSON),
Companies E & C, private, enlisted by Captain Parsons of Co E
for 3
years at Huntingdon, TN
on 8/20/62 and mustered in at Humboldt, TN on 8/24/62 at age 20. He was 5’9” tall, fair complexion, blue
eyes,
light hair, born in Carroll Co, TN about 1842.
He was AWOL from 2/17/63-5/26/63 and was one of the 100 or
more
men who
went AWOL from the forts on the Mississippi/Tennessee line in June
1863. Norwood was arrested while AWOL
and returned
to the regiment in time to be captured with the regiment at Union
City,
TN on
3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia.
He had scrobutus there but survived, being
exchanged at Savannah, GA on 11/20/64. Taken
first
to
Annapolis,
he
returned
to
duty
and
was discharged with the regiment when it
disbanded at Nashville, TN
on 8/9/65. He married Emily Elizabeth
Pinkston in 1866 and applied for an invalid pension
in 1879. In 1890 he lived near the
Buena
Vista Post Office in
Carroll Co, TN. In September 1931, he
was one of only four Civil War soldiers remaining alive in Carroll
Co, TN. Norwood died
on 3/7/1933 and is buried in Butler’s Chapel Cemetery
in Buena Vista. He has a military
marker. There is a “Find A Grave”
entry showing
Norwood’s marker, his
obituary and a picture of him in uniform.
He was the son of John and Matilda O’Neill Norwood.

Lewis and Adaline Brackins Norwood and would have enlisted at
about age
