UMSTEAD, DANIEL, Co D, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Clothing of his worth $2.95 was captured at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62.  Umstead, however, appears on the muster rolls in July and August of 1863, indicating that he was not at parole camp in Columbus, OH.  He mustered out at Saulsbury, TN at the end of his one year enlistment on 10/26/63.  He was 33 years old (b. 6/20/1829 in NC).  Married to Louisa J Hill in 1856, he was brother-in-law to Robert Hill of Company E.  Umstead died on 3/20/1888 and is buried in the New Hope Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker.  He was the son of Abraham and Beady Parish Umstead and brother to Squire Umstead, also of Co D.  MR #1802

UMSTEAD, (ES)SQUIRE (J), Co D, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 18 (b. 1845).  He furnished his own horse and equipment. He had clothing captured at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62 that was worth $6.16.  He mustered out at Saulsbury, TN at the end of his one year enlistment on 10/26/63 and re-enlisted in Co K, 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry.  Umstead married Catherine Adams in 1868.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1890.  Umstead died on 10/04/17 and is buried in Walling Cemetery, Valley View, Cooke Co, TX.  He was the son of Abraham and Beady Parish Umstead and brother to Daniel Umstead, also of Co D.  MR #1803

UPTIGROVE, ELIJAH, Co E, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 9/1/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 9/4/62 at age 28/29.  He was 5’7” tall, dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, born in Decatur Co, TN.  He died of consumption in Paducah, KY on 3/17/64 and was buried in the National Cemetery at Mound City, IL in grave D-4088.  MR #1804
