HEATHCOTT (HEATHCOTE), WILLIAM H, Co B, private, enlisted for 3 years by T J Gaskins and mustered at Paducah, KY on 10/4/64 at age 18.  He was 5’11” tall, dark complexion, green eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Weakley Co, TN.  He deserted on 5/30/65 at Paducah, KY but returned to muster out with the regiment at Nashville on 8/7/65.  Heathcote appears to be the son of Elizabeth Gaskins and James H Heathcote.  In 1870 he lived with his sister in Weakley Co, TN.   MR #814

HEDGE(S), ISAAC, Companies B & C, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 6/28/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 8/11/62 at age 25/35.  He was 5’11’ tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Dyer Co, TN.  Hedges was due a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Absent sick with leave from 6/30/63-6/25/63, he was absent without leave when he joined 100 or more men who went AWOL from the forts on the Mississippi/Tennessee line in June 1863.  Hedges returned to duty on 1/7/64.  He was not captured at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and can be found at Columbus, KY, serving as an orderly at the headquarters of the colonel in charge.  He transferred from Co B to C on 8/19/64.  Hedges was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.  MR #817

HEDGES, BENJAMIN F (T)), Co E, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 6/28/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 8/11/62 at about 21.  He was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/64.  Captured again with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Hedges was taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 1/10/65 of scrobutus (scurvy).  He is presumed buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery, probably as an unknown.  Both his Andersonville roll and his wife’s pension list him as Benjamin F Hedges.  Martha Hedges’ widow’s applied for a pension in 1870.  MR #818

HEDGES, HENDERSON C, Companies E & C, bugler/private, enlisted for 3 years by Captain Parsons in Huntingdon, TN on 6/28/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 8/11/62 at age 40.  He was 5’10” tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair, a farmer, born in Humphries Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse and equipment for 2 months.  AWOL on 3/29/63, Hedges returned on 4/26/63.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia, Hedges survived and was exchanged through Charleston, SC on 12/20/64.  He was furloughed for 30 days then went to Camp Chase, OH.  Hedges is buried in the Ritter Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker but it has no dates.  His wife, Eliza Hedges, applied for a pension in 1880.  MR #819

HEFLEY, SAMUEL M, Co A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Jackson, TN on 8/18/62 at age 33.  He was in the battle of Lexington, TN in December 1862 and there is no further military information.  He apparently deserted.  Born in Henderson Co, TN on 1/12/29,  Hefley was a resident of Henderson Co, TN from 1850-1870.  He moved to Texas sometime before 1899 when he applied for an invalid pension which was rejected.  He died in Cameron, Milam Co, TX on 12/29/1905.  His wife was Tennessee Clarissa Hall Hefley, whom he married in 1858.  His parents were Martin and Clarissa Ann Mahaffey Hefley.  MR #823

HEFLIN, ALLEN S, Co B, private/corporal, enlisted by Lieutenant Crockett for 3 years at Paducah, KY on 1/8/64 and mustered at Columbus, KY on 6/14/64 at age 18.  He was 5’8” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Graves Co, KY.  He received a $300 bounty for enlistment.  Heflin was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1890.  A resident of Paducah, KY, he resided at #1103 Harrison Street.  Heflin died on 9/10/97 in Paducah, McCracken Co, KY of rheumatism, disease of liver and spleen, paralysis of left side and debility from age.  His first wife was Martha Taylor and the 2nd Ophelia Albritton (m. 12/1/75).  Ophelia received a widow’s pension.  Heflin's parents seem to have been James and Minerva Dupree Heflin and his brother Thomas H Heflin, also of Co B.  MR #824

HEFLIN, THOMAS H, Co B, private, enlisted by Lieutenant Crockett for 3 years at Paducah, KY on 1/8/64 and mustered at Columbus, KY on 6/14/64 at age 19.  He was 6’3” tall, dark complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, a farmer, residing in Paducah, KY.  Ill by June 1865 with diarrhea, Heflin was ordered to the hospital in Jeffersonville, IN.  His nearest relative was listed as John W Helfin, his brother.  Heflin was dismissed from the hospital and discharged through Louisville, KY on 6/15/65.  He died on 8/31/1866.  His parents seem to have been James and Minerva Dupree Heflin.  Allen S Heflin of Co B was his brother.  MR #825

HELMER, ROBERT W, Companies K & B, lieutenant, enlisted in Jackson, TN on 4/15/63 at age 35/36.  He was previously a sergeant in Co A, 3rd Michigan Cavalry.  .  On 4/10/64 he left Cairo, IL for Columbus, KY.  He commanded Co B from 10/31/64 after the court martial of Captain Beatty.  His muster roll says he was “prompt and efficient on duty.”  Helmer resigned on 6/12/65.  His letter of resignation said he had been in service since 9/12/1861 and felt it was due his family that he should “go out of the service.”  He returned to Michigan, became a sawyer and in 1880 applied for an invalid pension.  Helmer died on 5/12/85 at age 57 and is buried in the Richter/Tanner Cemetery in Darr, MI.  His widow, Ellen A Cady Helmer (m. 1866) applied for a pension in 1885.  A minor’s pension was filed in the 1890s, with Mary E Cole as guardian.  For another bio see Appendix A of “Hawkins’ Tories.”  MR #826

HENDERSON, WILLIAM H, Co B.  This person has no information in the muster rolls but his widow applied for a pension, in 1898.

HENDRICKS, WILLIAM H(ENRY), Co G, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/2/62 at age 21.  He was 5’11” tall, light complexion, black eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN on 9/14/41.  Hendricks was captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862 and had orders to report to Benton Barracks, MO then to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH.  He served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  Hendricks re-enlisted in Co G 2nd TN Mounted Infantry at age 22 on 11/30/63.  He was appointed 1st sergeant on 2/1/64.  His left leg was amputated due to burn and gangrene received on 6/1/64 while a POW.  In the 1890 veterans’ census he lived in Henderson Co, TN near the Sherman Mills Post Office.  Hendricks applied for an invalid pension in 1890 on his 2nd Mounted Infantry service.  His disability was considered to be total.   Hendricks died on 7/25/92 and is buried in the Bible Hill Cemetery in Decatur Co, TN.  Hendricks had three wives, Cena E Harris (m. 1862), Nancy Elizabeth Parks (m. 1867, divorced 1871), and Christina Charity Wood (m. 1871).  MR #829

HENSON, JOHN, Co H.  This person has no information in the muster rolls but his mother applied for a pension in 1891.

HERINDON (HERNDON), THOMAS D, Co K, private, enlisted for 3 years by Ford in Decatur Co, TN on 5/11/63 at age 33/34.  He was 6’6” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Gibson Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  There is no more information in his muster roll.  His wife, Sarah Lee Thetford Herndon (m. 1853) applied for a widow’s pension in 1867.  Those papers say that Herndon was shot in the head and killed at the battle of Union City, TN on 3/24/64.  Herndon may be the one casualty for the 7th Tennessee that was mentioned in some sources.  In the 1890 veterans’ census, Sarah Herndon lived near the Idlewild Post Office in Gibson Co, TN.  MR #831

HERINGTON (HERRINGTON), JOHN W, Companies C & A, private/sergeant, enlisted in Lexington, TN on 8/28/62 and mustered at Jackson, TN on 9/5/62 at age 31.  He was 5’10 ½” tall, light complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Craven Co, NC but a resident of Henderson Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Herrington was captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862 and reported to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH (parole camp).  He was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.  Herrington married Martha Jane Woodrell in 1856.  He died sometime before 1890 and is buried in Prospect Cemetery in Decatur Co, TN.  He appears to be the son of Charles and Maria B Dowdy Herrington.  MR #832

HERN (HEARN), JAMES M, Co A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Union City, TN on 2/29/64 at age 19 and mustered in St. Louis, MO on 6/22/65.  He was 5’7” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN.  Hearn is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia.  He was exchanged on 3/18/65 through Vicksburg, MS on 4/29/65 and discharged at St. Louis, MO on 7/13/65, due to disability.  He lost his left leg.  He is buried in the Old Bethel Cemetery in Henderson Co, TN but there are no dates.  In 1870, Hearn lived with his wife, Amandy J, and his mother, Elender, in Henderson Co, TN.  MR #833

HESTER, JAMES A, Co F, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 9/12/62 by Lieutenant Hawkins and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 22.  He was 5’5 ½” tall, fair complexion, grey eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Graves Co, KY.  Hester served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  He applied for an invalid pension in the 1890s while living in Kentucky.  Hester died before 1900 and is buried in Carter’s Chapel Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN.  He has a military marker but it has no dates.  His widow applied for a pension in 1900 while living in Tennessee.  MR #838

HESTER, JAMES I(RVING), Co I, private, enlisted for 1 year by Lieutenant Murray and mustered at Paducah, KY on 1/6/65 at age 22.   Hester was a refugee resident of Magnolia, IL at the time of his enlistment.  He was 5’7” tall, dark complexion, hazel eyes, black hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN, and a resident thereof in 1860.  He was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.  Hester appears to have joined Co G 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry on 12/1/63 before joining the 7th Tennessee.  By 1890 he was a resident of Henderson Co, TN.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1890 using J M Neely of Co M as his attorney.  MR #839

HETNIMSPROGER (HETTMANSPERGER), FREDERICK A, Co G, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 20.  He was AWOL by 1/20/63 after the battles of Lexington and Trenton, TX. The name is German.  MR #843

HICKMAN, WILLIAM (W), Co I, private, enlisted for 1 year and mustered at Paducah, KY on 1/6/65 at age 19.  At the time of enlistment Hickman was a refugee resident of Snachwine, IL.  He was 5’7” tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, born in Montgomery Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  His muster roll says he was discharged because his regiment had already mustered out on 4/22/64 but the 7th Tennessee had not mustered out by that time.  There is also a William in Co G 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry who enlisted on 12/5/63 at age 19 who might be the same man.  Hickman applied for an invalid pension while living in Arkansas in 1892.  His wife, Louise Hickman, applied for a widow's pension in 1903, also from Arkansas.  MR #846

HICKS, JOHN P, Co F, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 9/12/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 24/28.  He was 5’8 ½” tall, dark complexion, black eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Gilford Co, NC but a resident of Carroll Co in 1860.  Hicks was captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862 and had orders to report to Benton Barracks, MO then to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH but went AWOL instead.  The records on his captures are difficult to track.  He is said to have been one of the men AWOL from Grand Junction, TN who were captured at Ripley, TN in June 1863 and taken to prison in Richmond, VA but exchanged.  His muster roll also lists another capture at Jackson, MS on 8/17/63 which resulted in imprisonment in Richmond, VA and yet another at Bolivar, TN on 8/27/63.  Clearly this is not possible.  Someone else’s records must be included.  His last parole was said to be at Richmond, VA on 3/20/64.  In 1891 he applied for and received an invalid pension while living in Colorado.  Hicks is buried in the Lafayette Cemetery in Boulder, Colorado.  His wife, Mary J Hicks, applied for a widow's pension while still living in Colorado.  MR #847 

HICKS, WILLIS G(REENE), Co B, private/sergeant, enlisted by Lieutenant Crockett in Paducah, KY on 1/10/64 at age 25.  He was 5’10” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, black hair, born in Benton Co, TN, a farmer.  He furnished his own horse and equipment and received a $300 bounty for enlistment.  Hicks served previously in Co A 15th Kentucky Cavalry USA.  He went from private to sergeant on 2/6/65.  There is no evidence in the muster rolls that he was captured with the regiment at Union City TN on 3/24/64.  The men not captured were stationed mostly in Columbus, KY in the spring and summer of 1864 and in Paducah, KY in the fall.  He was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.  In 1890 he applied for an invalid pension while living in Arkansas.  He died on 2/9/1926 in Henry Co, TN.  Hicks, the son of James and Melinda Hicks, married Elizabeth A Swinney in 1858 in Henry Co, TN. MR #848

HIGDON (HIGDEN), WILLIAM T(HOMAS), Companies A & C, corporal/private, enlisted for 3 years at Huntingdon, TN on 6/25/62 by Captain Parsons and mustered at Jackson, TN on 7/4/62 at age 24/26.  He was 6’1” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Benton Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse and equipment and was due a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Higdon spent time in Andersonville Prison in Georgia.  Admitted to the hospital on 12/27/64 with scurvy, he returned to the compound on 12/17/64.  He enlisted in the rebel army on 2/28/65 but made his escape and returned to Union lines.  He was due .25 per day for 402 days back pay.  Higdon was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.  He married 1st Sarah Rowe and 2nd Francis Kilbreath.  He moved to Arkansas where he died on 10/22/1887.  The town of Higden, Arkansas is named for William’s father who ran a ferry there.  His parents were Thomas G and Dolly Thompson Hidgon.  MR #849

HIGGS, LOUIS or LEVI (pension), Co D, private, has no record of enlistment or muster.  He had previously served in the 13th /14th Cavalry USA.  Somehow he ended up in Andersonville Prison and died in the hospital on 10/6/64 of scrobutus (scurvy).  Higgs appears to be the Levy, Jr in the 1860 census of Weakley Co, TN.  His wife, Patience Parmer Higgs (m. 1852) applied for a widow’s pension in 1867.  MR #851

HILL, ELIAS or ELIJAH P, Co C, private, was the son of John Prior and Rebecca Aldridge Hill of Decatur County. He enlisted for 3 years at Lexington, TN on 8/28/62 and mustered at Jackson, TN on 9/5/62 at age 18. AWOL by 11/10/62 and again in May/June 1863, he has no date of discharge. He married Mary Jane Watson. MR #852

HILL, JOHN L (S), Companies C, E, & B, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 1/10/64 by Captain Parsons and mustered at Paducah, KY on 5/14/64 at age 18 (born 3/26/46).  He was 5’6” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN but a resident of Carroll Co, TN in 1860.  He received a $300 bounty for enlistment.  Hill was not captured with the regiment at Union City TN on 3/24/64.   The men not captured were stationed mostly in Columbus, KY in the summer of 1864 and in Paducah, KY in the fall.  He was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.  Hill died on 10/6/69 and is buried in the Hill Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker.  Hill was the son of Taylor L and Martha Hill and brother to Elijah C and Robert C Hill, both of Co E.  MR #854

HILL, ROBERT C, Co E, private, enlisted for 3 years at Huntingdon, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 8/11/62 at about 21 years of age (born 3/26/42).  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  His muster roll lists him as both absent sick and as AWOL in June 1863.  He left Grand Junction, TN on 6/13/63 but returned in time to be captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia.  He enlisted in the rebel army on 2/28/65 in order to get out of prison.  He made his escape at Savannah, GA on 5/5/65 and returned to Union lines, mustering out on 6/16/65.  Hill married Rebecca F Dodd in 1866.  In the 1890 veterans’ census Hill lived near the Buena Vista, TN Post Office and complained of scurvy and pneumonia.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1892.  He died 6/14/1906 and is buried in Blair Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN.  His widow, Rebecca F Dodd, applied for a pension in 1906.  Hill was the son of Taylor L and Martha Hill and brother to Elijah C and John L Hill, both of Co E.  MR #855

HILTON (HELTON), DUNCAN B, Co K, private, enlisted by Lieutenant Wallace for 3 years in Henderson Co, TN and mustered at Grand Junction, TN on 6/27/63 at age 28.  He was 5'8" tall, light complexion, grey eyes, light hair, born in Henderson Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse and equipment and served as the regimental teamster in August of 1863.  When the 7th Tennessee was stationed in Memphis, TN for a short time in November of 1863, Helton died there of Febris Intermittens (Intermittent Fever or Ague) on 11/28/63 in the Union Hospital.  He is buried in plot #1205 in the Memphis National Cemetery.  His wife, Betty Jane Henry of Wayne Co, TN, whom he married in 1854, applied for a widow's pension on 6/11/1864.  Helton was the son of Jesse B and Mary Helton of Wayne Co, TN.  MR #856

HIPKINS,  JAMES G H, Companies M & C, private, enlisted for 3 years in Henderson Co, TN on 7/15/63 by Captain Carrington at age 28.  He was 5’9” tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Charlotte Co, VA but a resident of Henderson Co, TN in 1860.  His muster roll says “turned over to Provost Marshall defenses at New Orleans by Captain Traylor.”  He was a “USA POW from Mobile who desires to be returned to regiment.”  A POW for five months, he was a “returned POW” present in July/August/September 1864.  A notation says he was sent to Lexington, KY as a witness in June 1865.  No discharge date is given and he was denied an invalid pension in 1870.  His widow, Elizabeth, was also denied a pension in 1890.  MR #857
