HODGINS, DAVID M, Co H, private/sergeant, enlisted for 3 years in Lexington, TN on 9/24/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/28/62 at about 33 years of age (b. 11/9/1829). He was a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN on 11/9/1829 and a resident thereof in 1860. He furnished his own horse and equipment. Hodgins deserted at Jackson, TN on 3/10/63 and was captured by the rebels in Henderson Co, TN on 4/5/63. Sent through Knoxville, TN to prison in Richmond, VA, he arrived on 4/27/63. Exchanged at City Point, VA on 5/5/63, he reported at Camp Chase, OH by 5/7/63, was en route to Columbus, KY on 5/18/63, and was sent to the regiment stationed near the Mississippi line on 8/3/63. Hodgins applied for an honorable discharge after the war and it was granted retroactively to 8/9/65. He died on 11/2/77 and is buried in the Mt. Mariah Cemetery in Henderson Co, TN. His wife, Sarah “Sally” Wallace Hodgins, applied for a widow’s pension in 1890. MR #859
HOLBROOK (HALBROOK), JOHN H,
Co G, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62
at age 35. He was 5’7 ½”
tall, sallow complexion, blue eyes, light hair and furnished
his own horse and equipment. Holbrook
was captured and paroled at Kenton Station, TN on 12/18/1862
after the battle at Lexington, TN and reported to Camp Chase
in Columbus, OH, as instructed. He remained until June
1863, when he was sent to Nashville, TN. Holbrook died sometime between
the 1870 Henderson Co census and the 1890 veterans’ census
when Rebecca J Holbrook reported that she was a widow. She applied for a widow’s pension in

HOLLIDAY, WILLIAM H, Co B,

Paducah, KY. He was 5’6” tall,
fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in
Henry Co, TN. Holliday was in the
hospital at Paducah, KY but returned to duty on 7/27/64. He was discharged with the regiment
when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. He applied

age 24/29. He was 5’8” tall, fair
complexion, blue eyes, light hair, born in Benton Co, TN. Hollowell was captured and paroled
with the regiment at the battle of Trenton on 12/20/1862 plus
he lost clothing worth $2.95. He
reported to parole camp at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH by
3/30/63. He suffered from an
ulcer on his leg at Camp Chase by 5/11/63.
Hollowell served out his one year enlistment and
mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.
He joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in 1860 and
was dismissed by letter in September 1867.
He settled in Rector Co, AR. Hollowell seems
to be the son of Reddin and Jane Hollowell and brother to
Stephen Hollowell (Hallowell) of Co D.

age 43. He furnished his own
horse. There is nothing else in
his file except that he served out his one year enlistment and
mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.
Holmes is buried in the Bennett-Belew Cemetery in
Carroll Co, TN with a military marker but it has no dates. His wife was Elizabeth J Woodall
Holmes (m 1842). His son, William
E Holmes, Co G, was born in DeSoto Co, MS before the family
moved to Carroll Co, TN. MR #871

age 20 (born 10/22/43). He was
5’7” tall, fair complexion, grey eyes, dark hair, a farmer,
born in Anson Co, NC but a resident of Henderson Co, TN in
1860. He furnished his own horse
and equipment and was due a $100 bounty for enlistment. Captured and paroled with the
regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862, he
reported to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH as instructed, where he
remained until September 1863. After
exchange he returned to the regiment on 10/20/63 at Saulsbury,
TN. Presumed captured with the
regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Holmes spent time in
Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Exchanged
through North East Ferry, NC on 2/27/65, he stopped first at
Annapolis, MD, then Camp Chase, OH. He
was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at
Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. When he
joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post #65 in 1884,
his residence was Brindley Farrier, TN. Holmes
applied for an invalid pension in 1886. In
the 1890 veterans’ census he lived in Jack’s Creek, Chester
County and reported his “left eye nearly out.”
He died on 9/30/1909 and is buried in the Union Hill
Cemetery with a military marker. His
wife, Amanda J Holmes, applied for a widow’s pension in 1909. Holmes was the son of Thomas
Theophilus and Lucinda Little Holmes. MR #872
HOLMES, WILLIAM E, Co G,
private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 (same
as his father George P Holmes) at age 17.
He was 5’8” tall, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, black
hair, born in DeSoto Co, MS, a farmer. Captured
and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on
12/20/62, he reported to parole camp at Camp Chase in
Columbus, OH, where he contracted measles and pneumonia. Admitted to the hospital on 4/19/63,
Holmes died on 5/7/63. He was
placed in grave #16 but was most likely moved elsewhere at a
later date. His clothing was sent
to Clarksburg, TN. His parents
seem to have been George P (Co G) and Elizabeth Woodall
Holmes. MR #873
HOLT, WILEY A, Co C, private, enlisted for 3 years but never officially mustered. He received a $300 bounty for enlistment. Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Holt was taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he developed scrobutus. Exchanged through Vicksburg, MS on 4/21/65, he seems to be one of the members of the 7th Tennessee who was on the ill-fated steamer “Sultana” upstream from Memphis, TN on 4/27/65. There is also an entry in Holt’s muster roll that says he reported to Camp Chase, OH on 5/26/65, however. He died in Weakley Co, TN and might be the Wiley Holt in the Capps Family Cemetery in Weakley Co. His widow received a pension. MR #876

of his enrollment except he was present from November of 1863
to February of 1864. He died at
Union City, TN on 2/1/64 and was buried first at Union City,
TN. Holmes was moved to the

and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 10/1/62 at age 28. He was 5’6” tall, dark complexion,
blue eyes, dark hair, a farm hand, born in Carroll Co, TN and
a resident thereof in 1860. Captured
and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on
12/20/1862, Hood reported to parole camp at Camp Chase in
Columbus, OH. He died there on
5/27/63 of wounds to his breast and arm, presumably from the
battle of Trenton. His wife applied for a
widow's pension in 1875 and there is a minor's
pension. He was the son of Bryant and Margaret

mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 29.
He was 5’9 ½” tall, dark complexion, blue eyes,
dark hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN on 2/24/32. Captured and paroled with the
regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862, he lost
his horse and equipment, which was worth $128.
Hood reported to parole camp at Camp Chase in Columbus,
OH to await exchange. He mustered
out at Nashville, TN in October 1863 at the end of his one
year enlistment. He applied for an
invalid pension in August of 1889. When he joined the
Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in 1890 he gave his address
as Clarksburg, TN. He died on
5/14/1908 and is buried in the Stanford Cemetery in Carroll
Co, TN. He has a military marker
on his grave. He married Mary Jane Scott. His wife
applied for a widow's pension. MR #880

Hart and mustered in at Saulsbury, TN on 8/14/63 at age 19/21. He was 6’ tall, dark complexion,
black eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN and
a resident thereof in 1860. He
furnished his own horse and equipment. Presumed
captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Hooks
spent time in Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died in
quarters on 10/4/64 of diarrhea acute. He
was buried in grave #10329 in the Andersonville National
Cemetery. He was the son of
Kendall and Damcy or Lean Hooks. His mother applied for
a pension on his service record. MR #881
HOOSIER (HOOSER), THOMAS J,
Co K, sergeant, enlisted for 3 years in Henderson Co, TN
5/12/63 and mustered at Scotts Hill, TN on 5/26/63 at age 20. He was 5’ 11” tall, light
complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Henderson
Co, TN. While the regiment was
moving into Memphis from the forts along the TN/MS border, he
suffered a gunshot wound in his left knee joint. Hooser received an invalid pension by
1870 which gave him $6 a month. He
lived in Dunbar, Decatur Co, TN in 1883.
Buried in the Red Walnut Cemetery in Decatur Co, TN, he
has a military marker. His widow,
Hannah E Hooser, received a pension in 1887. In 1890 she
seems to be in Dunklin Co, MO. MR #882
HORN, MAJOR B, Co K,
private, enlisted for 3 years in Decatur Co, TN on 5/12/63 at
age 20. He was 5’7” tall, light
complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Henderson
Co, TN and a resident thereof in 1860. Presumed
captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Horn
spent time in Andersonville Prison in Georgia.
From there he was transferred to Camp Lawton in Millen,
GA where he died at an unknown date. Horn was buried in
grave #52 but was re-interred in Beauford, SC in plot 38,
grave #135. He was the son of
Major (wagon maker) and Martha Horn. MR #885
HORNBECK, JOSHUA, Co K,
private, enlisted for 3 years by Captain Beatty in Henderson
Co, TN on 5/12/63 at age 32. He
was 5’9” tall, dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, a
miller, born in Henderson Co, TN and a resident thereof in
1860. Presumed captured with the
regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Hornbeck was taken to
Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 2/23/65 of
rheumatismas. He was buried in
grave #12693 in the Andersonville National Cemetery. His widow, Sarah Hornbeck, applied
for a pension in 1870. Hornbeck
seems to have been the son of John and Judith Preslar

8/4/62 and mustered 8/18/62 at age 20/22.
He furnished his own horse and equipment and was due a
$100 bounty for enlistment. Captured
and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on
12/20/1862, he had orders to report to Benton Barracks, MO
then on to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH. Apparently
he went since he has no AWOL on his record.
Appointed a corporal on 2/1/64, he is presumed captured
with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to
Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Exchanged
through North East Ferry, NC on 3/2/65, he was discharged with
the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. A resident of Henderson Co, TN, he
seems to be the son of the widow, Delaney S Horne. MR

corporal, enlisted for 3 years in Paducah, KY on 2/8/64 and
mustered at Columbus, KY on 6/14/64 at age 22 (b 2/2/1842). He was 5’ 10 ½” tall, dark
complexion, yellow eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Marshall
Co, KY on 2/2/1842. He was
discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville,
TN on 8/7/65. House applied for
an invalid pension in June 1880. He
died on 1/4/1884 in Johnson Co, IL. His
wife, Melisa Angeline Gillespie House, filed for a widow's
pension, while living in Illinois in 1886. MR #889

Co K, private, enlisted for 3 years in Henderson Co, TN on
5/18/63 by Captain Beatty. He was
21 years old (census 16), 5’9” tall, light complexion, blue
eyes, black hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN. Houston spent 3 months recruiting
from April through June of 1863 but deserted on 7/1/63 at
Grand Junction, TN. No discharge
is given in the records. He was a
resident of Henderson Co, TN in 1870, married to Martha A

HOWELL, DAVID, Co B,
private, enlisted for 3 years in Columbus, KY by Lieutenant
Hix on 8/30/64. He was 21 years
old, 5’7” tall, light complexion, grey eyes, light hair, a
farmer, born in Green, KY. He was
discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville,
TN on 8/9/65. This was Howell’s
2nd enlistment, having previously served in Co B, 15th
Kentucky Cavalry USA. He applied
for an invalid pension in 1883 while living in Illinois. In 1890 he lived in Metropolis, IL
and wrote a voucher for John P. Aaron’s disability pension
application. His widow, Martha J
Howell, applied for a pension in April 1915 while living in

age 27. He was 5’9” tall, light
complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair, a farmer, born in Carroll
Co, TN and a resident thereof in 1860. Captured
and paroled at the battle of Lexington, TN on 12/18/62, Huey
went to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH to await exchange and spent
time in the hospital there. He
was sent to Nashville, TN in July and September 1863 and
mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.
Huey is buried in the Tucker Cemetery in Carroll Co,
TN. His widow, Mary Jane Gordon
Huey, applied for a pension in 1887 but it was denied. In the 1890 veterans’ census she
lived near the Cawthorn, TN Post Office. MR #894
HUFFMAN, CHARLES D, Co K,
private, enlisted for 3 years at Fort Hindman, KY on 7/14/63
at age 35. He was 6’ 2 ½”
tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in
Granville, NC. He furnished his
own horse which was worth $85. On
12/20/63 he was arrested in Richview, IL while traveling north
on a train. His family was at
Sandival (north of Richview) and he said he was going to find
them a good home. Huffman was
taken to Alton, IL on 12/21/63 but apparently released. Presumed captured with the regiment
at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was taken to Andersonville
Prison in Georgia where he died in quarters on 8/11/64 of
unknown causes. He was buried in
grave #5281 in the Andersonville National Cemetery.
There was an application for a minor's pension in 1890.

private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN by Lieutenant
Murray and mustered in Nashville, TN on 7/29/65 at age 18. He was 5’2” tall, dark complexion,
black eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Huntingdon, TN and a
resident of Carroll Co, TN in 1860. He
furnished
his own horse and equipment and was due a $300 bounty for
enlistment. Presumed captured
with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Huffman spent
time in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He joined the
rebel army on 2/28/65 in order to leave prison but was able to
return to Union lines. He was due pay for 408
days. In 1890 he applied for an invalid pension. Huffman died 8/11/1922 and is buried
in Prospect Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN. His
parents were John and Sallie Huffman and his 2nd wife was
Winnie E Huffman (1910 census). MR #896
HUISTIS, ANDREW J(ACKSON) H, Co D, enlisted for 1 year at Trenton, TN at age 21. He was 5’8” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, born in Wrights Corner, Dearborn Co, IN, on 12/22/40 but a resident of Decatur Co, TN when he enlisted. Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862, Huistis had orders to report to Benton Barracks, MO then to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH. There is no mention of discharge. Huistis applied for an invalid pension in 1890 while living in Arkansas. He died on 9/6/1908 due, according to descendents, to a 16 penny nail stuck in his throat. He is buried in the Weddington Cemetery in Weddington, AR. Ellen C Clark Huistis (m. 1867 in IL) applied for a widow’s pension in October 1918 while living in Arkansas. Huistis was the son of George (b. NY) and Catherine Bealer (b. OH) Huistis who were living in Decatur Co, TN in 1860. MR #897
HUISTIS (HEUSTES), STEPHEN W, Co D, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/15/62 and mustered on 9/24/62 at age 23. He was 5’6” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Dearborn Co, IN in 1839. Huistis furnished his own horse and equipment. He served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. Husitis moved to Cincinnati, OH after the war and became a cigar manufacturer. He applied for an invalid pension in September 1890 while living in Ohio. He died on 10/24/1897 of chronic diarrhea and disease of the stomach in the 5th Ward, 108 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, OH. He is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery. Utica Lemmon Crider Huistis (2nd wife, m. 1877) applied for a widow’s pension in November 1897. Huistis was the son of George T (b. NY) and Catherine Bealer (b. OH) Huistis who were living in Decatur Co, TN in 1860 and was brother to Andrew Jackson Huistis, also of Co D.

bounty for enlistment. Hutchins
was captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of
Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862. He
most likely spent time in parole camp in Columbus, OH. Presumed captured with the regiment
at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Hutchins was taken to
Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He
was exchanged through Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC on
11/20/64. He
spent time on guard at the corral in February, 1865. His muster was complete on 12/14/64
and Hutchins was discharged with the regiment when it
disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. He
was in Johnson Co, IL in 1865 but returned to Carroll Co, TN. Hutchins died sometime before
February 1880 as his widow filed for a pension while living in
