McKinney was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN and spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase). He was sent to Nashville in September 1863 and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. McKinney married Mary L Evans in 1865. He filed for an invalid pension, #1,176,324/950,931, in 1896. In 1910 he lived in the 6th District of Carroll Co, TN, could read and write, and owned his own farm. He died on 1/12/1916 and is buried in the Ferguson’s Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN. He has a military marker. McKinney’s parents were James and Elizabeth Matilda McKinney of Carroll Co, TN.

There is a strange note in his records that says that he was “illegally dishonorably discharged.” He was still alive in the 1910 veteran’s census, was widowed, could read and write, was a laborer and lived in the 6th District of Carroll Co. His wife, Mary McKinney, is in Ferguson’s Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN.

He was AWOL from Grand Junction, TN on 6/20/63 but returned in time to muster out with the one year enlistees at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. He applied for an invalid pension, #1,143,514/986,214, in 1893. In the 1910 veteran’s census he lived in District #20 of Carroll Co, TN, owned his own farm and could read and write. He died on 4/2/1915 and is buried in the Ferguson Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN. He was a brother to Napoleon B McKinney of Co F.
MCKINNEY, NAPOLEON B, Co F, pvt, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/8/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 18/20. He was 5’6 ½” tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN and a resident thereof. He was captured and paroled at either the battle of Lexington or the battle of Trenton, TN and spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase). He died there on 2/27/63 of pneumonia. Apparently his body was returned home as he has a marker in the Ferguson Cemetery. His effects, as listed in his file, included, one great coat, two blankets, one uniform coat, one trousers, two drawers, one pair boots, one pair stockings. He was a brother to Lafayette A McKinney of Co F.
MCLEOD, JOHN A, Co F, quartermaster sergeant, enlisted by Captain Hawkins for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 9/13/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 25/32/35. He was 5’11 ½” tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN on 10/15/1826. Appointed quartermaster sergeant on 9/24/62, he was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62 and spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase). Sent to Nashville in September 1863 to be mustered out, he was discharged at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. In 1870 McLeod was a school teacher in the 12th District of Carroll Co, TN, still living with his parents, Daniel and Martha McLeod. He is still with his parents in 1880 and seems never to have married. He died on 7/22/1889, is buried in Palmer’s Shelter Cemetery, and has a military marker on his grave. He was a brother to Norman H McLeod, also of Co F.
MCLEOD, NORMAN H, Co F, pvt, enlisted by Captain Hawkins at Trenton on 9/24/62 and mustered the same day at age 21/22. He was 6’ tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN on 2/14/41. He was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62 and spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase). Sent to Nashville in September 1863 to be mustered out, he was discharged officially at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. In 1870 McLeod and his wife, Otera M, were living with his parents, Daniel and Martha McLeod. They are still with his parents in 1880. In the 1890 veterans’ census, McLeod lived in Huntingdon, TN. He applied for an invalid pension, #1,029,420/775,404, in 1891 and joined the Huntingdon GAR Post in 1892. McLeod died on 3/5/1915 and is buried in the McLeod Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN. His grave has a military marker. He was a brother to John A McLeod.
MCMACKINS, WESLEY, Co K, pvt, enlisted by Lt. Wallace for 3 years in Decatur Co, TN on 5/1/63 at age 36. He was 5’11” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN. He was AWOL from 1/16/64-2/14/64 but returned to duty in time to be captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 6/26/64 of remittent fever. He is buried in grave #2500 in the Andersonville National Cemetery. He was listed as W Mackens in the “NY Times” Andersonville death list.

He was 5’7” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN. He was one of the 100 or more men who went AWOL from the forts on the Mississippi/Tennessee line in June 1863. McMorris left Grand Junction, TN on 6/24/63 and apparently never returned.
MCMULLEN, CULLEN D, Co F, pvt, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 9/12/62 at age 36/39. He was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62. There is no further information in his files. McMullen lived in the Bethel Community of Carroll Co, TN in 1850 and 1860 but is not in the county in 1870.
MCMULLEN, DEMPSEY, Co F, pvt, enlisted by Captain Hawkins for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 9/20/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 28. He was 5’10” tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer. In 1860 McMullen was a resident of Gibson Co, TN. He was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62 and spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase). Sent to Nashville in September 1863, he mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. There is a Dempsey McMullen who might be the same soldier who joined Co A, 1st KY Infantry in 1864 and served until 2/12/65 when he was discharged at Paducah, KY.
MCMULLEN, ROBERT L, Co E, pvt/sgt, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 8/1/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 9/24/62 at age 24. He was 5’8” tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, a boot maker and a resident of Carroll Co, TN in 1860. He furnished his own horse and equipment. Appointed sergeant on 7/16/63 after Sgt Jasper Richardson of Co E went AWOL and was captured, McMullen became a quartermaster sergeant on 1/25/64. He is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 since he was a prisoner in Andersonville Prison in Georgia and later died of scurvy on 11/12/64 in Millen Prison in Lawton, GA. He was the son of James and Matilda McMullen of Carroll Co, TN.
MCNEELY, T. W., Co I, quartermaster sergeant, enlisted and mustered in Union City, TN on 12/16/63. He furnished his own horse and equipment which was unusual this late in the war. He is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 12/14/64 of scrobutus (scurvy). He is buried in grave #12,277 in the Andersonville National Cemetery.
MEALS, DANIEL J(AMES), Co A, pvt/corporal, enlisted for 3 years in Jackson, TN on 8/28/62 and mustered the same day at age 19. Born in Alabama in 1841, he was a resident of Henderson Co, TN in 1860. He furnished his own horse and equipment. His obituary mentioned participation in the battles of Lexington, TN and Corinth, MS. His muster roll says he was at the battle of Trenton on 12/20/1862, so he is assumed to have spent time in parole camp at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment. Meals is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 since he was a prisoner in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Released through North East Ferry, NC on 3/3/65, he was taken to an Annapolis, MD hospital and then to the hospital in Mound City, IL in April 1865. Meals mustered out with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. He married Eliza P. Nolan of Paducah, KY and later moved to Clarksburg, TN where he worked as a blacksmith. He applied for an invalid pension, #561,740/665,778, in 1886. A Primitive Baptist and a Mason, Meals died at Hollow Rock, TN on 1/17/1931 and is buried in Blair Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN. His widow, Eliza P Meals, applied for a pension, #1,697,259/A-2-11-32, in 1931. He was the son of Samuel H and Elizabeth Meals and a brother to Asa H G Meals of Co A.
MEALS, ASA H(ARPER) G(ASTON,) Co A, pvt, born in Alabama, about 17 years old (census) and a resident of Henderson Co, TN. He furnished his own horse and equipment. He is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 since he was a prisoner in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Exchanged through North East Ferry, NC on 3/3/65, he was taken to Annapolis, MD and hospitalized for intermittent fever. Given a furlough on 3/24/65, he died in Metropolis, IL of small pox on 4/5/65. He was the son of Samuel H and Elizabeth Meals and a brother to Daniel J Meals. Samuel H Meals applied for a father’s pension, #478,390/329,808.

He was 5’7” tall, dark complexion, grey eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN and a resident thereof. Meals died in the hospital at Grand Junction, TN of unknown cause. Buried first at Grand Junction, he is now in the National Cemetery at Corinth, MS in plot #8133. He was the son of William and Susanna Meals. W H Meals was the administrator of his estate.
MEDLIN, ROBERT L, Companies H, C, & I, pvt, enlisted for 3 years by Captain Derryberry at Lexington on 9/9/62 and mustered at Trenton on 9/28/62. He was 5’11” tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes, auburn hair, a farmer, born in Decatur Co, TN and a resident thereof. He furnished his own horse and equipment and was due a $100 bounty for enlistment. Medlin was one of the 100 or more men who went AWOL from the forts along the Mississippi/Tennessee line in June 1863. He left La Grange, TN on 6/22/63 but returned by July 1863. A note says he was captured at Winchester, TN on 7/29/63 and sent to Grand Junction, TN via Cairo, IL. He is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 since he was a prisoner in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Exchanged on 3/19/65, Medlin was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.
MEDLIN, JOHN A, Co K, pvt, enlisted by Sgt Ford for 3 years in Gibson Co, TN on 5/23/63 at age 18. He was 6’ tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Gibson Co, TN. He was AWOL by June 1863 and did not return.
MELTON, BEVERLY (N), Co E, pvt, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 8/1/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 8/11/62 at age 18 (born 1842). He was a resident of Carroll Co, TN in 1860. Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton on 12/20/1862, and Melton is assumed to have spent time in Camp Chase in Columbus, OH along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment. His record has him AWOL from Union City, TN on 2/19/64. Apparently he was able to explain his absence. He seems to have been away, however, when the regiment was captured there on 3/24/64. There is no further information except that he was mustered out at Camp Chase, OH on 7/13/65. Melton married Rebecca Radford on 10/8/64 in Carroll Co, TN while still in the military. By 1910 he was living in Benton Co, TN, where he died in 1912. He is buried in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery in Benton Co, TN and has a military marker on his grave.
MELTON, R(EUBEN) R(ILEY) H, Co E, pvt, enlisted on 1/15/64, most likely at Union City, TN where the regiment was stationed. He was never mustered, apparently he was captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia before muster. Exchanged through Jacksonville, FL on 4/28/65, his discharge date is not recorded in the muster rolls. He married M. L(avinia?) Bradford in 1867, and seems to be the Riley Melton in the 1870 Benton Co, TN census. Melton applied for an invalid pension, #499,385/666,439, in 1883. He died about 1898 and is buried in the Bradford Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker on his grave. His widow Amanda L Bradford Melton applied for a pension, #679,520/504,630, in 1898.
MELTON, WILLIAM T(ILEY), Co E, C & B, pvt/5th sergeant, enlisted by Captain Parsons for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 8/1/62 and mustered in Humboldt on 8/11/62 at age 28/30. He was 5’6” tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN with residence in Buena Vista, TN. He furnished his own horse and equipment and was due a $100 bounty for enlistment. Captured in Henderson Co, TN and paroled, presumably by Forrest’s troops, at Clifton, TN on 1/1/63, his record also mentions the battle at Trenton. He was appointed sergeant on 1/25/64 and transferred to Co C, then Co B by 8/19/64. There is no evidence in the muster rolls that he was captured with the regiment at Union City TN on 3/24/64. The men not captured were stationed mostly in Columbus, KY in the summer of 1864 and in Paducah, KY in the fall. Melton was discharged through the hospital in Jeffersonville, IN due to disability on 6/13/65. He married Temperance Boswell and moved to Clay Co, Arkansas about 1870 where he married twice more. He applied for an invalid pension, #604,260/176,945 from Arkansas in 1887. He died in Marmaduke, Arkansas in 1917.

He was discharged on 2/18/63, probably from disability. These records are in with the records of William T Melton, not in a separate file.
MIDDLETON, ALFORD (ALFRED) W(EAKLEY), Companies K, B & C, corporal, enlisted for 3 years by Lt. Wallace at Scott’s Hill in Henderson Co, TN on 5/20/63 at age 20. He was 5’10” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN. He furnished his own horse and equipment. Listed as present in May and June 1864, he apparently was not captured at Union City, TN according to his records. He deserted in Kentucky at some point and was received back 6/15/64 and was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. He applied for an invalid pension, #720,430/550,773, in 1889. In the veterans’ census of 1890, he lived near the Long PO and said he was in Andersonville Prison for 8 months, which is strange. He died on 6/8/1898 and is buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Henderson Co, TN. His wife, Mary L Middleton, applied for a widow’s pension, #686,296/499,633, in 1898.

He was either 5’6”/5’8” tall, fair/dark complexion, blue/dark eyes, light/dark hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN. The two description lists disagree. He furnished his own horse and equipment. Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton on 12/20/1862, he spent time in Camp Chase in Columbus, OH but went AWOL from there on 7/9/63. Captured in Jackson, TN on 8/19/63, Miller was confined in Richmond, VA by 9/26/63 and paroled through City Point, VA on 3/22/64. Sent to the hospital in Annapolis, MD, then to Camp Parole on 4/29/64, he eventually was sent to “dismounted camp on 5/19/64. He mustered out early at Nashville, TN most likely due to disability. He moved to Texas and applied for an invalid pension, #640,243/985,942. He died, however, in Chickasha, Grady Co, OK on 7/29/1922. He appears to have been the son of Samuel and Maria Miller of Henderson Co, TN.

The only other entry in his file is that he was restored to duty from confinement and was present June/July of 1864. No discharge date is given.

He was 5’4” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, a farmer, born in McNairy Co, TN. He is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 since he was a prisoner in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Exchanged through Jacksonville, FL on 4/28/65, he was discharged on 6/26/65. He applied for an invalid pension, #442,961/315,332, in 1882. He was a lumber salesman in 1910 in McNairy Co, TN. He died on 4/15/1916 and is buried in the Sweet Lips Cemetery in Chester Co, TN. His widow, Margarie C or E, applied for a pension, #1,066,467/809,953, in May 1916.

He left La Grange, TN on 6/22/63, and was captured by rebels at Bolivar, TN on 6/21/63. Sent to prison in Richmond, VA by 7/25/63, he was paroled on 9/29/63. He entered the hospital in Annapolis, MD in September 1863 and was at Camp Parole by 12/21/63 and on to Camp Chase, OH by 1/11/64. Furloughed on 5/7/64, he returned to the regiment, his AWOL was removed and he was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. Miller married Eliza Caroline Pharis in Kentucky and died on 11/14/1903 in Hickman Co, KY. He seems to be the G. W. Miller buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Croley, KY.

He was one of the 100 or more men absent from the forts along the Mississippi/Tennessee line in June 1863. Captured in West Tennessee on 6/21/63, he was taken to prison in Richmond, VA where he died on either 7/20/63, 11/1/63 or 11/21/63 (all dates are in the records) of unknown cause. His widow, Sarah Essery Miller, married Meridith Grimsley of Companies A & C in Paducah, KY in February 1865. Miller was the son of David and Penelope Miller who were in the Henderson Co, TN census in 1850.
MILLER, JOHN A, Co D, captain, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 8/24/62 at age 28/29. He was a teacher before the war. Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton on 12/20/1862, he spent time in parole camp at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment. He was AWOL from Camp Chase from 4/19/63, but returned. Exchanged in June 1863, Miller went home for 20 days on sick leave. He served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. In August of 1864 he mustered in Co M 12th Tennessee Cavalry and became its Captain. This company was made up primarily of re-enlistments from the 1st Alabama Cavalry and the 7th Tennessee Cavalry. They fought in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. After the war Miller returned to Henderson Co, TN. He was killed in 1878 by George Fronabarger, who had been dating his daughter, and is buried in Natchez Trace’s Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. His widow, Mary Ann Parish Miller, went to Grayson Co, TX with their children. She applied for pension #288,468 in 1881. There is a minor pension application, #347,662, filed in December 1886 in Texas. Mary A Collier was named guardian.

Miller was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62 and spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase). He was “in command from 6/20/63 to 9/20/63.” After exchange he mustered out of Co D at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. Miller re-enlisted and mustered in Paducah, KY on 3/13/65 at age 29. No discharge date is given for Co I. His wife, Lacy J Miller died in 1873 in Henderson Co, TN. Miller applied for an invalid pension, #931,977/1,060,330, while living in Indian Territory in 1890. He was the son of Samuel Crawford and Maria Griggs Miller of Henderson Co, TN.

He was AWOL by 6/28/65 but returned in time to be discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. In the 1890 veterans’ census he lived in Big Sandy in Benton Co, TN. Melton applied for an invalid pension, #780,981/570,760, in 1890. He died on 8/7/99 and is buried in the Sugar Creek Cemetery about 12 miles northeast of Camden, TN.
MINUS (MIZE or MANUS), Co K, pvt, enlisted for 3 years in Henderson Co, TN on 5/29/63 at age 25. He was 5’8” tall, dark complexion, grey eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN. He died at Saulsbury, TN on 10/12/63 of smallpox. He was buried first locally but was re-interred in the National Cemetery in Corinth, MS.

He was on detached duty recruiting in June of 1863 and was apparently caught since he spent July through October as a POW, no prison named. He returned and was present in November/December 1863. Mitchell is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He died in quarters on 8/13/64 of diarrhea acute. He is buried in grave #5594 in the Andersonville National Cemetery. His widow, Mary E Mitchell, applied for a pension, #170,906/133,142 in 1869. In the 1890 veterans’ census she lived in the Middle Fork community of Henderson Co, TN.

Dyer’s Compendium gives his enlistment date as 2/18/65, just a few months before the regiment disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65.
MIZZELL, ANDREW (J), Companies B & A, pvt, enlisted by Captain Martin for 3 years in Union City, TN on 12/15/63 and mustered at Paducah, KY on 5/14/64 at age 22. He was 5’11” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in either Carroll or Henderson Co, TN. He was a resident of Carroll Co in 1860. He furnished his own horse and equipment. Mizzell was not captured at Union City on 3/24/64 as he was present with the detachment in July and August of that year. He was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. Mizzell married Amanda J Rogers in Benton Co, TN after the war. The 1890 veterans’ census, however, gives his widow as Sarah J Mizzell, living near the Profitt PO. Mizzell seems to be the son of William A Mizzell and his first wife.

He was 5’11” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in either Carroll or Henderson Co, TN. (It is the same description as that of his brother, Andrew Mizzell). A resident of Carroll Co in 1860, he furnished his own horse and equipment. Mizzell was not captured at Union City on 3/24/64 as he was present with the detachment in May and June of that year. He was discharged with the regiment when it disbanded at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65. Mizzell seems to be the son of William A Mizzell and his first wife.
MONTGOMERY, SAMUEL J(OHNSON), Co F, pvt, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co on 8/5/62 at age 24 (born 4/19/38). He furnished his own horse and equipment. AWOL in April 1863 he either did not go to Camp Chase, OH to parole camp or left there without permission. He returned to duty in time to be mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63 with his company. Montgomery married Louisa A Neely in 1869. He was living in Carroll Co, TN near the Leach PO in the 1890 veterans’ census. Applying for an invalid pension in 1891, he received #1,009,185/762,172. Montgomery died 4/24/1916 is buried in Antioch Cemetery #2 in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker. (See “Find a Grave” for a photograph of stone.) His widow received pension #1,066,217/811,258.
