SPIRES, JOHN (A), Companies B & A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Carroll Co, TN on 8/16/62 and mustered in Benton Co, TN on 8/17/62 at age 47/51.  He was 5’10”, fair or dark complexion, hazel or grey eyes, gray or light hair, a farmer, born in Benton Co, TN (more likely Anson Co, NC), and a resident of Benton Co, TN in 1860.  He seems to have escaped being captured with the regiment at both Trenton, TN  in Dec 1862 and at Union City, TN  in March 1864.  At some point he was hospitalized for two months with chronic ulcers of the left leg.  He received a disability discharge at Mound City, IL in June, 1865.  Spires died on 8/11/72 and is buried in the Spires Cemetery in Benton Co, TN with a military marker.  His brother, Robert Spires, is in the same cemetery with a Confederate marker.  His wife, Susan A Spires, applied for a widow’s pension in 1879.  MR #1676

SPIRES, JOSEPH (A or K), Co B, private, enlisted for 3 years in Carroll Co, TN on 8/16/62 and mustered in Benton Co, TN at age 37/38.  He was 5’8” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, born in Anson Co, NC (1824), a farmer and a resident of Benton Co, TN.  He received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville in Georgia and other eastern prisons.  Released through Jacksonville, FL on 4/28/65, Spires was taken to Maryland, then to Camp Chase, OH where he mustered out on 6/14/65.  He returned to Benton Co, TN and is in the 1870 census with his wife, Dicy P T McGee Spires (m. 1861).  In 1888 Spires applied for an invalid pension while living in Illinois.  He died on 3/19/1910 and is buried in the Wolf Creek Cemetery, Williamson Co, IL with a military marker.  MR #1677

SPIRES, ROBERT, Companies B & A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Carroll Co, TN on 8/16/62 and mustered in Benton Co, TN on 8/17/62 at age 18/20.  He was 5’6 ½” tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Benton Co, TN and a resident thereof.  He received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville in Georgia and other eastern prisons.  He remained a POW until 2/8/65.  Spires mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He received an invalid pension in 1888 and moved to Illinois at some point.  He joined Post #237 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Cartersville, IL on 12/31/1919.  He died on either 11/6/1921 or 1931.  MR #1678

SPOON, ELIJAH, Co D, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 40.  He was 5’11” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a mechanic, born in Stokes Co, NC.  Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862, he most likely spent time in parole camp at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment awaiting exchange.  These men were exchanged from June through September, 1863.  Spoon mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  On 8/4/64 he re-enlisted, this time in Co M, 12th TN Cavalry.  He was appointed corporal by 8/28/64 and quartermaster sergeant by 4/1/65.  He left Carroll Co, TN before the 1870 census.  MR #1679

SPRINGER, (RENNIE) BEN(NETT), Co G, 1st duty sergeant/sergeant, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 25.  He was 5’6” tall, dark complexion, hazel eyes, black hair, a carpenter, born in Carroll Co, TN (10/4/36) and a resident thereof.  He furnished his own horse and equipment, worth $90.  Promoted to duty sergeant on 9/28/62, he was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62, he spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase) awaiting exchange.  Sent to Nashville in September 1863, he mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  Springer married Clementine Sellers in 1865 and was listed as a cabinet maker in the 1870 census.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1890.  Springer died on 1/9/1902 and is buried in Sellers Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker.  His widow, Clementine Springer, applied for a pension in February 1902.  Springer was the son of Urias and Ruth Belew Springer and brother to Hosea Springer of Co D, all of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1680

SPRINGER, HOSEA (MOSES?), Co G, 4th duty sergeant/sergeant, enlisted in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 23.  He was 5’10” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN.  He served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  Springer married Nancy C Sellers in 1865.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1891.  The Carroll Co Democrat, 1/4/1895, has a detailed story about how one of Springer’s sons cheated him out of $90 and fled to Texas.  Springer died in 1916 and is buried in Sellers Cemetery with a military marker but no dates.  His widow, perhaps Nancy F Tosh Kelly Springer, applied for a pension in October 1916.  Springer was the son of Urias and Ruth Belew Springer and brother to R B Springer of Co D, all of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1681

STAGNER, JAMES A, residing in District #10, Henderson Co, TN, told the 1890 veterans’ census taker that he had been a corporal in Co A, 7th Tennessee Cavalry.  He said he was a prisoner of war at Andersonville, GA and served from 1862-1865.  He has no records in the muster rolls, however.

STAMPS, DANIEL, Co C.  He has no muster rolls in the 7th Tennessee but he appears to be one of the 13th/14th TN Cavarly who survived the massacre at Fort Pillow. They were stationed with the 7th Tennessee at Columbus, KY in the spring and summer of 1864 but were placed in Co E, 6th TN Cavalry, as was Stamps.  He applied for and received an invalid pension in 1877, as did his widow later.   He has no records in the muster rolls of the 7th Tennessee.

STEEL, JAMES L(INDSLEY), companies A & B, corporal, enlisted for 3 years Carroll Co, TN on 8/12/62 and mustered in Benton Co, TN on 8/17/62 at age 40.  He received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862, his muster rolls say he was absent on parole on 3/30/63, sick in May and June of 1863, present on 1/1/64 but sick again by 3/1/64 through 7/1/64.  He was not captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64.  The men who escaped generally spent the spring and summer of 1864 in Columbus, KY.  Steel mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  Born in Maury Co, TN to William D and Mary Arnold Steel, husband to Sarah Johnson Steel (m. 1845) and a half brother to Lt. Elbert N Royal of companies A & B, Steel is said to have died in Buena Vista, TN on 1/9/1869.  MR #1682

STEEL, JOHN T, Co A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 1/1/64 and mustered at Paducah, KY on 5/14/64 at age 37.  He had a fair complexion, light hair, was born in Carroll Co, TN and received a $300 bounty for enlistment.  He was not captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64.  The men who escaped generally spent the spring and summer of 1864 in Columbus, KY.  At some point he asked for a furlough to visit his family at Johnsonville, TN, which indicates that some of his Carroll Co, TN relatives were refugees there.  Steel mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He was the son of William D and Mary Arnold Steel and brother to James L Steel.  Steel married 1st Eliza T Shankle in 1848 and 2nd Lucinda Johnson.  MR #1684

STEPHENS, JOHN, Co M, private, enlisted for 3 years in Adamsville, TN on 7/6/63.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia.  His muster roll says that he was “last heard from on or about 12/25/64 in the hospital at Andersonville in a dying condition.”  Stephens is assumed to be buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery in an unknown grave.  His widow, Lucinda, received pension.  MR #1689

STEPHENS, MONROE, Co H.  This man was rejected when he applied for a pension in 1891.  He has no records in the muster rolls of the 7th Tennessee.

STEWART, EDWARD, Co I, private/sergeant, enlisted for 1 year and mustered in Paducah, KY on 1/10/65 at age 40.  He was as a refugee resident of Magnolia, IL at the time of his re-enlistment.  He had previously been in Harrison’s Battalion, which was attached to the 7th Tennessee in August 1863 at Corinth, MS and later in the 15th Infantry under Major Milton Hardy.  Stewart was 5’10” tall, fair complexion, gray eyes, fair hair, a farmer, born in Greenville Co, SC on 1/12/1825 and a resident of Carroll Co, TN in 1860.  After a short 8 month career in the 7th, he mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  Stewart remained in Carroll Co, TN to 1876 when he moved to Henderson Co, TN, then  on to Faulkner Co, AR 1881-1886 before he left for Corsicana, TX. (pension)  He applied for an invalid pension in 1891.  Stewart died on 5/22/1907 and is buried in the Oakwood, Cemetery, Corsicana, TX.  Married to Lucinda Ross in 1843, he was the son of John and Lettie Stewart.  MR #1694

STEWART, JAMES R, Co K, private, enlisted for 3 years at Saulsbury, TN on 8/4/63 at age 36.  He was thought to have deserted but apparently he “wouldn’t muster” so he was never sworn in.  His desertion charges were removed.   He left the military by 11/8/63.  In the 1890 veterans’ census he gave an enlistment date but no discharge date.  He lived near the Huron Post Office in Henderson Co, TN at the time.  Strangely Stewart applied for and received an invalid pension.  He died on 6/12/1909 and is buried at Palestine, TN in Henderson Co, TN.  His obituary was in the Lexington Progress.  MR #1696

STEWART, JOHN R (K), Co M, private, enlisted for 3 years in Adamsville, TN on 7/6/63.  He was a school teacher before the war and was “detailed as clerk in the adjutant office.”  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 10/3/64 of scrobutus.  Stewart is presumed buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery in an unknown grave.  He appears to be the son of Alfred and Elizabeth Stewart and brother to Alfred Merrill Stewart of Co E, 11th Illinois Infantry.  MR #1696

STEWART, LEVI, Co K, sergeant/private, enlisted for 3 years by Captain Beatty at Jackson in Madison Co, TN on 5/30/63 at age 19.  He was 6’1” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN.  AWOL by 4/5/63, he was also one of the 100 or more men who went AWOL from the forts on the Mississippi/Tennessee line in June 1863.  Stewart left Grand Junction on 6/30/63 and never returned.  Descendants believe he was killed by guerillas.  MR #1697

STEWART, THOMAS J(EFFERSON), Co I, private, enlisted for 1 year by Lieutenant Murray and mustered the same day in Paducah, KY on 1/12/65 at age 20.  He was 5’8” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN and a resident thereof in 1860.  He fled north, however, and was living as a refugee in Magnolia, IL when he enlisted.  He may also have been connected previously with Co D, 5th MO Infantry Co I, 12th US Infantry, Co G, 11th US Infantry.  Stewart received a $66.33 bounty for enlistment.  He mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He applied for an invalid pension while living in Missouri.  He seems to be the son of Edward Stewart of Co I.  MR #1698

STONE, REUBEN, Co C, private, enlisted for 3 years in Lexington, TN on 8/28/62 at age 18.  He died at Trenton, TN on 12/25/62 of pneumonia.  Originally buried near Paris, TN, he was removed to plot #1248 in the National Cemetery in Memphis, TN.  He was the son of William and Elzady Stone of Henderson Co, TN. MR #1699

STONE, WILLIAM, SR, Co H, private, enlisted in Lexington, TN on 9/24/62 at about age 59 (b. 1/10/1803) and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/28/62.  He deserted at Lexington on 3/10/63 and again at La Grange, TN on 6/22/63.  Records in Memphis show him confined on 11/26 and 27/1863.  From his widow's pension application in 1866, Stone appears to have died of dropsy in January of 1864  No discharge is recorded.  There is also a minor's pension application in 1890.  MR #1700

STONE, WILLIAM, JR, Companies H & C, private, enlisted in Lexington, TN on 9/24/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 11/24/62 at age 23.  He received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Stone was captured at the battle of Lexington, TN, paroled, and deserted at Lexington by 5/10/63.    He returned in time to be captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64.  Imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia, he accepted an offer on 2/28/65 to be released from prison if he would join the Confederate Army.  Escaping from his new rebel regiment he returned to Union lines by 4/20/65.  Stone mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He died in April 1906.   MR #1701

STRATTEN (STRATTON), JOHN M, Companies M & C, private, enlisted for 3 years in Lexington, TN by Captain Reed on 7/1/63.  He was 5’9” tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, a farmer born in Maury Co, TN but a resident of Lexington, TN.  He received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Stratton was not captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64.  The men who escaped generally spent the spring and summer of 1864 in Columbus, KY.  Stratton was a nurse at the regiment hospital at some point and suffered from chronic rheumatism.  Discharged from the hospital in Jeffersonville, IN due to disability on 6/1/65, he received travel expenses from Louisville, KY to Lexington, TN.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1888.  Stratton was living in Lexington, TN in the 1890 veterans’ census.  His widow, Margaret M Stratton, applied for a pension in 1901.  MR #1702

STRATTON, JOHN L, Co M, private, he is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64 and imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 9/25 or 26/64 of scrobutus.  Stratton is buried in grave #9803 in the Andersonville National Cemetery.   He was most likely the son of Samuel and Jane Stratton of Henderson Co, TN.  MR #1703

STRICKLIN, PETER (O), Co K, private, enlisted for 3 years in Decatur Co, TN by Lieutenant  Wallace on 5/12/63 at age 24.  He was 5’7” tall, brown complexion, black eyes, black hair, a farmer, born in Decatur Co, TN.  Stricklin was one of the 100 or more men who went AWOL from the forts on the Mississippi/Tennessee line in June 1863.  He left Grand Junction, TN on 6/11/63.  There is no record of a discharge.  Stricklin joined Post #65 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Sardis, Henderson Co, TN in 1889.  He listed his residence as Scott’s Hill, TN.  He died on 2/15/1905 and is buried at Scott's Hill.   MR #1704

STUBLEFIELD (STUBBLEFIELD), DALLIS, Co B, private, enlisted for 3 years in Paducah, KY on 2/10/64 and mustered at Columbus, KY on 6/14/64 at age 19.  He was 5’8” tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Massac Co, IL.  Stubblefield mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He applied for an invalid pension while living in Houston Co, TN, McKinnon Post Office.  Stubblefield died on 7/20/1898 and is buried in the Pitt Settles Cemetery, Dover, Stewart Co, TN.  His widow, Francis Robinson Stubblefield, applied for pension in the 1890s.  MR #1711

SUGG, JOEL M(ARK), Co G, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 19 (born 6/8/44).  He was 5’7 ½” tall, light complexion, grey eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN and a resident thereof.  He furnished his horse and equipment from 1/1/64 to 5/6/64.  Captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62, he spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase) awaiting exchange.  Sent to Nashville in September 1863, he mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  He needed, at the time, to pay for a gun, belt plate, canteen and haversack.  He enlisted in Co K, 2nd TN Mounted Infantry on 1/1/1864 and was discharged on 4/6/1865 at Nashville, TN.  Sugg married Tempia Jane King in 1866.  After the war he lived in Maple Grove, TN, Holladay, TN, Hobart, AR, Dardanelle, AR and Magazine, AR.  He  applied for an invalid pension in 1890 while living in Dardanelle, AR.  Dying on 10/11/1931 in Belleville, Arkansas, he was buried in the Spring Mountain Cemetery.   Sugg's 2nd wife, Sarah Hickerson (m. 1917) applied for a widow's pension.   Sugg was the son of Aaron and Mary Laycook Sugg of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1713

SUTTEN (SUTTON), GEORGE W, Companies K & C, private, a deserter from Co A, 71st Ohio on 8/10/63, he was enlisted by Captain Beatty for 3 years in Saulsbury, TN on 8/13/63 at age 22.  He was 5’6” tall, light complexion, grey eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Preble, OH.  He received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville in Georgia and other eastern prisons.  A letter exists in the muster rolls from his wife, Elizabeth Sutton, asking the government for information about him.  He survived prison and mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1890 and his wife applied for a widow's pension on 10/3/1904.  MR #1715

SWAFFORD, JOHN W, Co H, farrier, enlisted for 3 years in Lexington, TN on 9/24/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/28/64.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Swafford died in Union City, TN on 3/6/64 and is buried in the small Swafford Cemetery in Henderson Co, TN.  His widow, Mary Susan Fields Swafford, applied for a pension in 1866.  Mixed in with these records are records for a John Swafford, Co I, who enlisted in Paducah, KY on 3/8/65.  This John was 18 years old.  John W Swafford was in his 50s.  One of these men was 5’6” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair and born in Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1719
