SANDERS, BENJAMIN A(RMSTEAD), Co D, sergeant major/private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 22.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  He was made sergeant major by Colonel Hawkins on 11/26/62.  No discharge date is recorded in the muster roll.  Sanders married Mary E Butler in 1860 in Carroll Co, TN and they were living with his brother, Furman Sanders (Co D), in the 1860 census.  Sanders applied for and received an invalid pension in 1890.  He died in Antlers, OK on 2/4/1917.  His widow applied for a pension in 1918.  Sanders was the son of James and Martha W Butler Sanders of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1579

SANDERS, FERMAN (FURMAN) C, Co D, 6th sergeant/sergeant, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 25 (born 8/6/1837 in Anson Co, NC).  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62, he failed to report to parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase) and was AWOL by 1/20/63.  The charge was later removed and a discharge was furnished on 10/2/67 to date 10/8/63.  Sanders married 1st Elizabeth McCauley and then Susan Garrett Weake.  He served as Sheriff and Justice of the Peace of Carroll Co.  (Goodspeed)  He joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in 1887 and applied for an invalid pension in 1890.  Sanders died on 1/10/1928 and is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker.  He was the son of James and Martha W Butler Sanders and brother to Benjamin Armstead Sanders, also of Co D.  MR #1580

SATTERFIELD, STEPHEN W, Co C, sergeant.  He was one of the 20 or more men of the 13th/14th (Bradford's) Tennessee Cavalry who were not captured with their regiment at Fort Pillow on 4/12/64.  They were temporarily attached to the 7thTennessee detachment stationed at Columbus, KY in the spring and summer of 1864.  These men left the 7th to become part of Co E, 6th Tennessee Cavalry.  Satterfield applied for an invalid pension.  He died in Kansas City, MO.  MR #1583

SAUNDERS (SANDERS), THOMAS, Co B, private, enlisted for 3 years in Paducah, KY on 8/8/64 and mustered at Columbus, KY the same day at age 16/18.  He was 5’6” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Harden, IL but a resident of Sparks Hill, IL.  Saunders was hospitalized at Jeffersonville, IN from September-December 1864 and listed his nearest relative as John Lowry of Tennessee.  He was discharged through Louisville, KY on 6/15/65.  A few of his records are in with those of Benjamin Sanders and are under the name Thomas Sanders.  MR #1585

SCARLETT, SHADRICK (FREDERICK) M, Co I, private, enlisted for 1 year in Paducah, KY on 3/13/65 and mustered the same day and place at age 24.  He was 5’10” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Weakley Co, TN but a refugee resident of Trivoli, IL at the time of his enlistment.  He deserted less than two months later and stole his horse and equipment when he left.  Scarlett married Phoebe Bowater.  MR #1587

SCOTT, CHARLES M(ACAJAH or MICAJAH), Companies C & A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Jackson, TN on 8/18/62 at age 22/23/25.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Hospitalized on 3/7/64, he missed being captured with the regiment at Union City TN on 3/24/64.  The men not captured were stationed mostly in Columbus, KY in the spring and summer of 1864 and in Paducah, KY in the fall.  Scott mustered out with the regiment at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  His wife was Mary McPeake Scott.  A resident of Henderson Co, TN before the war he moved afterward to the boot heel of Missouri where he died in 1877.  (Scott’s Hill, TN, Gordon Turner p. 288).  A minor’s pension with J(ames) G(abriel) Scott as guardian was filed in 1890.  Scott was the son of John and Mahala Austin Scott and brother of Jesse Scott of Co A.  MR #1591

SCOTT, DANIEL H, Co A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Trenton, TN on 9/26/62 (Dyer) and mustered on 11/8/62 at age 22/25.  He furnished his own horse and equipment and received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia.  Paroled on 3/1/65 through North East Barracks, NC, Scott mustered out with the regiment at Nashville, TN on 8/9/65 when the regiment disbanded.  In 1889 he joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post #81 and in 1890 he applied for an invalid pension while living in the #10 district of Henderson Co, TN.  Scott died of erysipelas on 4/8/1908 three miles west of Lexington, TN at his old home place. (obit, Lexington Progress).  His parents were James and Anna Scott.  MR #1592

SCOTT, GABRIEL, Co A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Lexington, TN on 8/4/62 and mustered at Jackson, TN on 8/18/62 at age 18.  He was 5’9” tall, dark complexion, black eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN and a resident thereof.   Scott appears to have been captured at home in Henderson Co, TN on 3/1/63 or 3/5/63 and taken to Richmond, VA where he was paroled almost immediately (3/31/63) through City Point, VA.  He was in the hospital in Annapolis, MD on 4/13/63 and was in Paducah, KY by 4/29/63 or 4/30/63, when he died of consumption.  Scott is buried in the Mound City, IL National Cemetery in grave # D-4104.  At the time of death he had 1 hat, 1 coat, 1 uniform coat, 2 trousers, 2 cotton drawers, 1 flannel shirt, 1 cotton shirt, 1 pair boots, 2 pairs of socks, 1 blanket and $19.  He was the son of Willie and Milly Scott.  Willie Scott applied for a father’s pension in 1892.  MR #1593

SCOTT, HENRY C(LAY), Co G, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 18 (born 10/20/1844).  He was 5’5” tall, fair complexion, black hair, blue eyes, and a resident of Carroll Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse from 2/28/63 to 9/1/63.  Scott contracted pneumonia on or about the 1st of December, 1862 at Trenton, TN (pension).  He appears to be one of the who were not captured with the regiment at Trenton, TN on 12/20/62.  In which case he would have been stationed with the detachment along the Tennessee and Mississippi border.  He served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.   Scott re-enlisted in Co G,  2nd TN Mounted Infantry (Hardy's Battalion) but was never called for service.  In 1867 Scott married Durotha Isabel Gulledge in Carroll Co, TN and became a farmer.  He helped build the church/school building at Poplar Springs in Carroll Co, TN and attended the Church of Christ there.   In 1883 he applied for an invalid pension and died of chronic bronchitis on 5/2/1914 near Westport, TN.  Scott is buried in Sellers Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN with a military marker.  His widow, Durotha Scott, filed for a pension in May 1914.  Scott was the son of John (a Justice of the Peace) and Rebecca Brandon Scott of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1594

SCOTT, HENRY G, Co I, private, enlisted for 3 years in Buena Vista, TN on 9/15/63 and mustered the same day at Union City, TN at age 28 (census).  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 9/13/64 of scrobutus.  He is most likely buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery.  Scott and his wife Barbara A Scott are in the 1860 census of Carroll Co, TN.  She applied for a pension in 1869 and was receiving $8 per month in the 1883 list of pensioners for Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1595

SCOTT, JAMES J, Co G, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 17.  He furnished his own horse from 1/1/63 to 4/1/63.  He served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  On 1/17/64 Scott re-enlisted at Johnsonville, TN, this time in Co K, 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, USA.  He was 5’6” tall, and had a fair complexion, dark hair, and gray eyes.  Injured by a run-away team, he broke his ankle and a bone in his leg.  He was honorably discharged on 6/27/1865.  Scott married Jane Tabitha Britt in 1867.  In 1883 he applied for an invalid pension based on his service in the 2nd Mounted Infantry.  He married the widow Ancebell S Napier in 1886 and in 1890 was a resident of Henderson Co, TN.  Scott died of bronchial pneumonia at Wilderville, TN on 11/13/1918 according to his tombstone in the Farmersville Cemetery, Wildersville, TN or on 11/14/1918 according to his pension papers.  He has a military marker.  Scott’s obituary was in the Lexington Progress on 11/22/1918.  His widow, Ancebell Scott, filed for a pension in 1918.  She died in 1831 in Deering, MO.  Scott was the son of Chronicle and Jane Brandon Scott of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1596

SCOTT, JESSE R(IGHT), Co A, private, enlisted for 3 years in Jackson, TN on 8/5/62 at about 18 (born 11/8/43).  Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862, he most likely spent time in parole camp at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment awaiting exchange.  These men were exchanged from June through September, 1863.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Scott was imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia.  Released through Jacksonville, FL on 4/28/65, he was taken to Camp Chase, OH, where he mustered out on 6/26/65.  He married Sarah Lavinia Thomas and in 1889 joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post #81.  A pension application in 1890 was denied.  Scott died on 8/6/98 and is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Henderson Co, TN with a military marker.  His widow applied for and received a pension in 1898.  There is a picture of Jesse Scott in the Scott’s Hill book by Gordon Turner, p. 125.  He was the son of John and Mahala Austin Scott.  MR #1597

SCOTT, JOHN, Co G, 2nd sergeant, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 34.  He served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63. There is no more information in his muster rolls.  He might be the John Scott who lived in the 13th District of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1598

SEARERS (SEAVERS), JOEL (A) B, Co C, private, enlisted for 3 years and mustered in Paducah, KY on 10/10/64 at age 18.  He was 5’7” tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, a farmer, born in Williamson Co, TN.  Seavers mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  Joel A B Seavers applied for an invalid pension in 1891 while living in Kentucky.  He died on 11/22/1918 in Mayfield, KY.  He appears to have been the son of Fielding and Nancy Seavers.  MR #1599

SEAY, (SEERY), HENRY L, Co M, corporal, enlisted in Adamsville, TN by Captain Musser on 7/1/63 at age 20.  He was 6’1” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Hardin Co, TN.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville in Georgia and other eastern prisons.  Released through Jacksonville, FL on 4/28/65, he was taken to Annapolis, MD then to Camp Chase, OH on 6/22/65, where he was discharged on 6/23/65.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1882.  In the 1890 veterans' census he lived in Hardin Co, TN near the Morris Chapel Post Office and complained of rheumatism.  He died soon thereafter since his wife, Catherine Seay, applied for a pension in the 1890s.  Seay was also in Co A of the 3rd TN Cavalry.  MR #1602

SELLERS, JESSE L, Companies E, B, & C, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 7/4/62 and mustered in Jackson, TN on 8/1/62 at age 19.  He was 6’ tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Described as “absent sick most of the time,”  there is no evidence in the muster rolls that he was surrendered with the regiment at Union City TN on 3/24/64.  The men not captured were stationed mostly in Columbus, KY in the spring and summer of 1864 and in Paducah, KY in the fall.  Sellers mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He married Rebecca Neighbors in Carroll Co, TN in 1867.  He applied for an invalid pension in 1870.  By the 1890 veterans' census he was living in Fannin Co, TX near the Ector, PO.  He reported a “leg broken by a fall.”  Sellers died on 12/28/1920 in Ector, TX.  His wife, Margaret A, applied for a widow’s pension in January 1921 while living in Coryelle, TX.  MR #1603

SETTEMYRE (SETTLEMIRE), JOHN W, Co B, private, enlisted for 1 year in Paducah, KY on 4/12/65 by Lieutenant Helmer at age 21.  He was 5’5”tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Tippen (?), MS.  He received a $33.33 bounty for enlistment.  Settemyre mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  Previous to service in the 7th Tennessee, he had enlisted in Co G, 1st Alabama Cavalry, USA on 5/11/1863 at Chewalla, McNairy Co, TN and mustered out on 11/26/1863 in Memphis, TN.  Settemyre applied for an invalid pension.  His widow, Mattie, applied for a pension in April 1901 while living in Arkansas.  It was approved on 3/12/1906 for $8 per month.  MR #1608 

SHARP, JOHN F, Co C, private, enlisted for 3 years in Lexington, TN on 8/28/62 at age 19.  He was captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62.  There is no further information in his muster roll except for a desertion on 11/10/62.  MR #1611

SHAW, JAMES, Co B, private, enlisted in Columbus, KY on 7/21/64 at age 22.  He was in military prison at Columbus, KY in August of 1864 and AWOL at Paducah, KY by 11/25/64.  Shaw evidently returned to duty as he was killed by the enemy near Columbus, KY on 1/10/65.  MR #1612

SHAW, JOHN P, Companies F, A, & I, private/sergeant, enlisted for 1 year in Co F at Trenton, TN and mustered the same day on 9/24/62 at age 22.  He served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  He was 5’8 ¾”tall or 5’9”, dark or fair complexion, blue eyes, dark or light hair, a farmer, born in Williamson Co, TN or Davidson Co, TN, depending on which description list is used.  He re-enlisted at Paducah, KY on 9/10/64 in Co A and mustered at Paducah on 10/18/64 at age 24.  Shaw was appointed sergeant in Co I on 2/19/65.  He mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He married Cornelia A Morgan in 1866 and Matilda C Ledsinger in 1869.  Shaw applied for an invalid pension in 1890 while living in Missouri and died between that time and when Matilda Shaw applied for a widow’s pension in 1900 in Tennessee.  Shaw was the son of Jesse and Nancy Shaw of Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1613

SHELTON, JAMES B, Co B, private, enlisted for 3 years in Paducah, KY on 3/1/64 and mustered at Columbus, KY on 6/14/64 at age 18.  He was 5’8” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, a farmer, born in Wayne Co, TN.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Shelton was orderly at Post Headquarters in Columbus, KY and was frequently on detachment.  He mustered out at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  Shelton married Mary Broyles and moved to Cherokee Co, TX by 1870. In 1890 he filed for an invalid pension while living in Texas.  He also lived in Oklahoma and in Kansas, where he died of throat cancer at Fort Leavenworth, KS in on 11/11/1918.  He appears to have been the son of Caleb and Serena English Shelton.  MR #1616

SHELTON, JOHN W, Co C, bugler.  He was one of the men of the 13th/14th Tennessee Cavalry not captured with their regiment at Fort Pillow on 4/12/64 who were temporarily attached to the 7th Tennessee detachment stationed at Columbus, KY in the spring and summer of 1864.  These men left the 7th to become part of Co E 6th Tennessee Cavalry.  Shelton later went AWOL from the 6th Tennessee.  MR #1617

SHIRRIN, WILEY A, Co E.  This man applied for an invalid pension in 1906 but was rejected.  He has no muster rolls in the roster.

SHLASS (SCHLASS), ISAAC R, Co G,private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 8/5/62 at age 21.  He was AWOL by 12/20/62 or 1/20/62, which was just after the battles of Lexington and Trenton, TN.  Some men either failed to return to duty after the battle of Lexington, TN or failed to report to parole camp after the unit was captured at Trenton, TN.  MR #1618  

SHORT, LEONARD H, Co E, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 11/15/62 at age 18.  Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862, he most likely spent time in parole camp at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment awaiting exchange.  These men were exchanged from June through September, 1863.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died on 5/23/64 of diarrhea chronic.  He is buried in grave #1313 in the Andersonville National Cemetery.  Short might be the L H Short, son of Needham and Nancy Short, in the 4th District of Benton Co, TN in the 1860 census.  MR #1620

SIMMONS, SAMUEL C, Co F, private, enlisted for 1 year in Carroll Co, TN on 9/12/62 at age 26 (born 1/4/1835 in VA).  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  Simmons served out his one year enlistment and mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  He had married Sophronia Green in 1858. Simmons applied for an invalid pension  in 1890.  He joined the Post #56 Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Huntingdon, TN in 1896 at age 58.  Simmons died on 7/7/1907 and is buried in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Carroll Co, TN.  His third wife Amanda Simmons applied for a widow’s pension in September 1907.  MR #1621

SIMMONS, W is not on the muster rolls but was listed in the New York Times death list as a member of Company L, 7th Tennessee Cavalry who died in the hospital in Savannah, GA on 10/11/64.

SIMMONS, WILLIAM, Co C, private, enlisted on 1/4/64 and mustered on 1/12/64 in Bradford’s Battalion.  He was one of the 19 men of the 13th/14th TN Cavalry who were not captured with their regiment at Fort Pillow on 4/12/64 who were temporarily stationed with the 7th Tennessee detachment at Columbus, KY in the spring and summer of 1864.  These men left the 7th to become part of Co E 6th TN Cavalry.  Simmons was sick in the hospital on 12/15/65.  MR #1622

SIMONS (SIMMONS), WILLIAM B, Co B, private, enlisted for 3 years and mustered at Paducah, KY on 10/29/64 at age 18.  He was 5’8” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Weakley Co, TN.  He deserted at Paducah, KY on 5/30/65.  MR #1623

SIMPSON, CHARLES B, Co F, private, enlisted for 1 year and mustered at Trenton, TN on 9/24/62 at age 19 with the consent of his parents, James F and Martha Simpson.  He was 5’8” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN.  Captured and paroled at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/62, he spent time in parole camp at Columbus, OH (Camp Chase) awaiting exchange.  Sent to Nashville in September 1863, he mustered out at Saulsbury, TN on 10/25/63.  Simpson’s brother, John R Simpson volunteered in Co F, 52nd Indiana Infantry and died soon after the war.  The family appears to have left Carroll Co, TN.  MR #1625

SINGLETON, JAMES P, Co K, private, enlisted by Captain Beatty for 3 years in Saulsbury, TN on 9/1/63 at age 19.  He was 5’6” tall, light complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, a farmer, born in Hamilton Co, TN.  He received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville Prison in Georgia and other southeastern prisons.  Paroled through Jacksonville, FL on 4/28/65, he was one of the last group of the 7th Tennessee to be paroled.  Taken first to Maryland, then to Camp Chase, OH, he was discharged early at Camp Chase on 6/16/65.  Singleton lived in Henderson Co, TN in 1870 and applied for an invalid pension in 1889.  By the 1910 census he was widowed and living in Decatur Co, TN.  He died on 10/9/1914 at Scott's Hill, TN and is buried in Liberty Cemetery in Decatur Co, TN.  He has a military marker on his grave.  MR #1628

SINGLETON, JAMES W(YATT) or RANDOLPH W (WYATT R), Companies E & C, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 6/28/62 and mustered in Humboldt, TN on 8/11/62 at age 21/25/29 (census 24).  He was 5’10” tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, a farmer, born in Carroll Co, TN and a resident thereof.  He furnished his own horse and equipment and received a $100 bounty for enlistment.  Captured and paroled with the regiment at the battle of Trenton, TN on 12/20/1862, he most likely spent time in parole camp at Camp Chase in Columbus, OH along with Colonel Hawkins and others of the regiment awaiting exchange.  These men were exchanged from June through September, 1863.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, Singleton was imprisoned in Andersonville in Georgia and other eastern prisons.  Exchanged through Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC in November/December 1864, his muster was complete on 12/14/64.  He was hospitalized in Annapolis, MD, then Paducah, KY and Jeffersonville, IN by 5/24/65.  Singleton was officially discharged at Nashville, TN on 8/7/65 when the regiment disbanded.  He appears to have been the son of Robert and Nancy Wall Singleton of Carroll Co, TN and perhaps brother to John Singleton, also of companies E and C.  MR #1629

SINGLETON, JOHN, Companies E & C, private, enlisted for 3 years in Huntingdon, TN on 6/28/62 and mustered at Humboldt, TN on 8/11/62 at age 29.  He furnished his own horse and equipment.  He was AWOL from 2/17/63 to May 1863.  Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64, he was imprisoned in Andersonville in Georgia and other eastern prisons.  Exchanged through Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC in November/December 1864, he was taken to Annapolis, MD, then the hospital in Paducah, KY in January/February 1865.  Transferred to the hospital in Jeffersonville, IN he was discharged from there on 6/1/65.  MR #1630

SINGLETON, JOHN W, Co K, private, enlisted for 3 years in Henderson Co, TN by Captain Beatty on 6/1/63 at age 18.  He was 5’7” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, born in Henderson Co, TN.  He deserted on 8/21/63 at Saulsbury, TN.  There is a note that says “deceased.”  MR #1631

SINGLETON, LEONARD, Co K, private/corporal, enlisted for 3 years by Captain Beatty in Saulsbury, TN on 9/1/63 and mustered at Memphis on 11/20/63 at age 27.  He was 5’11” tall, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, born in Henderson Co, TN, a farmer, and a resident of Cravens Landing, TN.  Promoted to corporal on 12/11/63, he is presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/64.  Imprisoned in Andersonville in Georgia and other eastern prisons, Singleton was exchanged on the Savannah River on 11/29/64.  He deserted on furlough on 12/6/64 but died in General Hospital #2 in Annapolis, MD on 12/13/64.  Buried in the Ashgrove Cemetery in grave #248, he may have been moved to #648 Section B-158.  His widow, Marilda Goff Singleton (m. 1852), married Joshua W Poole.  Singleton’s minor children, Robert, Mary and James, were under the guardianship of Edmond Goff.  Their pension was filed in 1869.  MR #1632
