Additional information

Speedwell is one of the oldest cemeteries on the eastern side of Washington County. It lies near the corner of Buncombe Hill Road and Cherokee Road intersection.

An early deed refers to the Speedwell cemetery as the “John Longmire family graveyard”. Longmire lived there during the 1820’s and 1830’s and members of his family are buried here with simple field stone markers.

After Hunter School was built at the corner of Cherokee and Bill Bennett Roads, members of the Union Church of Christ met in the schoolhouse. Many members were buried here in the Longmire cemetery.

Cherokee Baptist Church records of 1838 state that some of their members met with Absalom Scott in the Hunter School to discuss his leaving their church. When Scott refused to return to the Baptist Church, he was expelled. He was a charter member of Union, which was founded in 1835.

When the first log building of the Speedwell Methodist Church was built in 1855, members of that congregation were buried at the Longmire Cemetery and the site became known as Speedwell Cemetery. Worley Mack Walters who owned the land around the cemetery donated land to enlarge the cemetery. He inherited the farm from his father, William Washington Walters.

They are: Mary Hunter Andes died 1850 and Mary Ann Irick (Willis) died 1886. Adam’s second wife probably died in Marion County, Tennessee around 1852. He returned to Washington County after her death. His grave has only a fieldstone as a marker.

Adam’s son, Aaron Andes died while in the Confederate Army during the war, 1863. His place of burial is not known. Adam’s son James served in the Mexican War and died young. He may be buried at Speedwell Cemetery. Adam’s son Peter Andes is buried at Speedwell and his stone is marked. Most of Adam’s 13 children left Washington County.

Isaac Watson lived at the corner of Buncombe and Cherokee roads and died in an accident while hauling wheat in Jul 1874. He is likely buried at Speedwell Cemetery. His father lived on what was known later as the Tom Harvey farm, just south of the cemetery on Cherokee Road. Several of his family members are buried at Speedwell.

The William Irwin family lived near the cemetery and family members were said to have been buried at Speedwell Cemetery.

Issiah or Issak W. Dunn born ca. 1822 in Virginia (died unknown) and wife, Nancy Lavonia Stowe also born in Virginia, dates unknown. They moved from Carter County to Washington County, Tennessee. Both are buried at Speedwell.
