Located on Will Lane, off of Rockingham Dock Road, Johnson City, Tennessee. There are three field stones in the yard of Mrs. McKinnon Ellis.

ANDREW (ANDY) GOODMAN

Veteran of the War of 1812

Born in Virginia (county unknown) in 1783 and lived in the Fork Country of South Fork of the Holston River in the 20th Civil District of Sullivan County, Piney Flats, TN. He married Catherine Saunders on May 15, 1812. John Scott, Justice of the Peace performed the ceremony.

Andrew was drafted into Captain James Landen’s 4th East Tenn. Militia at Blountville Muster Grounds November 13, 1814. He served six months and was discharged at French Mill, Alabama on May 18, 1815. Andrew returned to Sullivan County, TN. He and his wife had two children, a daughter, Elizabeth, born 1818, and a son, Andrew, born 1824.

He purchased land in Washington County on 2/29/1836, Deed Book #20, page 555; 2/7/1845, Deed Book #25, page 177; 11/1/1852, Deed Book #33, page 394. He was awarded Land Bounty #31578 of 80 acres in 1850, and an additional 80 acres on Land Bounty #11595 in 1855. These grants were made by an act of Congress to veterans of the War of 1812.

Andrew Goodman died Sept. 24, 1864, at age 81 and is buried along with his wife, Catherine and daughter, Elizabeth in a family plot reserved by deed 12/29/1875, by Elizabeth Goodman to Abraham Cash in Deed Book #91, page 568. This land and graves are located on the present day Rockingham Dock Road in the 11th Civil District of Washington County, TN on property owned by Mrs. McKinnon Ellis. Following the death of her husband, Catherine Goodman and daughter, Elizabeth, continued to live on the family farm then located on the Old Stage Road. Catherine moved back to Sullivan County to live with her son, Andrew, Jr. She is listed as age 96 in 1880 Sullivan County Census, District 20, page 23. She died shortly thereafter, about 1882 or 1883. The exact date of Elizabeth’s death has not been determined but she executed a deed conveying the remainder of the family farm to Abraham Cash on 11/2/1906, Deed Book #92, pages 170-172, Washington County, Tennessee.
