Galloway-Duncan Cemetery

TVA Cemetery #1 – Boone Lake Project – Washington County, TN
Washington County, Tennessee Tombstone Inscriptions by Charles M. Bennett and the Watauga Association of Genealogists. Information used with the permission of Lorraine Bennett Rae.
From volume 3, page 89 – entry 75
“Located on the left bank of the Holston River.  Flooded by Boone Lake.  TVA records indicate that there were 11 graves; 1 was removed.”
And, from volume 3, page 96 – entry 80 (Jesse Duncan Cemetery)
“Note:  They had gathered at the fort during an Indian attack and were returning to their homes in the vicinity of Borings Chapel.  Jesse Duncan went ahead of the party, possibly scouting, and they found (him) killed and scalped beside the trail.  They buried him on the spot.  His wife lived many more years and was buried near Borings Chapel.  TVA moved her body from the Boone Lake area and buried her beside her husband July 9, 1952.”
For the most part, Tennessee Valley Authority records were used to support this entry.  There seems to be some conflicting familial records.  These connections mentioned have not been proven, but are provided as a reference

LOCATION – At the time of grave removal, this burial ground was located on the farm of the heirs of John Bowman.  Currently, the property is owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority.  A TVA map was found showing the location rather clearly.
GPS:  +36° 26.500, -82° 25.590 (best approximation)
DEEDS – A thorough deed analysis was not done.  Deed Book 6, Page 522 (1794) State of North Carolina to Elizabeth Duncan – 300 acres.  The description is fairly general, however it does call “…..on south side of Watauga and Holsten river including the place where on the said Elizabeth Duncan lives…..”.
A conveyance of part of the original 300 acre tract went to one Ezekiel Wright, (Deed Book12, Page 288) in 1810.   One Emanuel Wright was married to Nancy Anne Bowman, daughter of a John Bowman.  Their son was John Nelson Wright.

BURIALS – The grave of Elizabeth Dodge Duncan was identified by one John N. Wright (per TVA grave removal sheet).  The grave of Mary Dodge Galloway and two Galloway infants were identified by a marker and by Mrs. Edythe Galloway Glaze (also per TVA records).  No connection between Elizabeth Dodge Duncan and Mary Dodge Galloway has been made other than they were buried within several feet of each other.
Based upon ages of Elizabeth (per deed dates) and Mary (marker) and grave locations, this burial ground was active prior to the Civil War and most likely ceased use by that same period.  Elizabeth’s grave was the eastern most grave and Mary’s the western most, with the unknowns in between.  It was most likely established by one of Elizabeth Duncan’s sons at the time of her death.
