Hardin County is located in southern West Tennessee. The Tennessee River bisects the county from south to north. The county is bordered on the south by Lauderdale county, Alabama, and Tishomingo county, Mississippi; on the east by Wayne County Tennessee, on the north by Decatur and Henderson counties, and on the west by Chester and McNairy counties, Tennessee. Savannah is the county seat. The Civil War Battle of Shiloh occurred in Hardin County, a few miles southwest of Savannah, near an area called Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. Shiloh Military Park occupies this site.
The county is named for Colonel Joseph Hardin, who blazed a trail through Southwest Tennessee’s thick woodlands in the early 1800s to map 2,000 acres of rich land on the east side of the Tennessee River.
