Duncan, James Whitten “Jamo”

DUNCAN, James Whitten “Jamo”, was born in Hardin County, Tennessee, the son of Alsa and Elizabeth DUNCAN. He was called to the Army when he was 23 years old on 6 Aug 1918. He served as Pvt., Battery “B” 137th Field Artillery. He served overseas from 6 Oct 1918 until 23 Dec 1918 and was discharged at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 13 Jan 1919. At enlistment he was 23 years old, a farmer. He had brown eyes, black hair, a dark complexion and was 6’1″ tall.

He married Sina WILBANKS and they had five children: Harry, Mary Elizabeth, Ruth, Patsy and Polly. Harry’s children are Harry. Jr., Larry, Janice, Ann, and Tommy Joe. Mary Elizabeth had one son, Ronnie; Ruth had three children: Maxel, Gary, and Deanna. Patsy had one daughter, Jean Ann. Polly had three children: Joe Denton, Jeff and Joan.

Jamo’s mother would tell his children about him riding a boat to Perryville, Tennessee and walking on home. They were all asleep when the dogs started barking and she heard someone whistling. She knew it was her precious son, Jamo, coming home. She awakened everyone in the house shouting, “Praise the Lord!” This was the best Christmas present she ever received.

He was a fine person and a wonderful father. He worked hard and taught his children well. He died in 1963. He was working for the State Highway Department and is buried in Savannah Memorial Gardens. Written by his daughter, Mary E. DUNCAN WILKERSON.

Dugger, William Frank

DUGGER, William Frank, Serial Number 2873283, served in the US Army from 28 May 1918 William F. Dugger(duggerwf.jpg 26902 bytes)until his honorable discharge on 14 Dec 1918. He was a son of James and Martha Sarah WOODARD DUGGER and was born 9 June 1886 on Factory Creek, Route 5, Wayne County, Tennessee. He had three brothers, Blaine, Jason and Ethridge; four sisters, Lessie Belle, Vada and Rose; and a half-brother, Andrew LARD.

When he was inducted into the army at the age of thirty-one, he was a farmer. He went to Camp Pike, Arkansas, and was a mechanic in the Headquarters Detachment, 10th Battalion. His special job was shoeing horses. He was in New York at the port of embarkation ready to board the ship to go “over there” in November 1918, when word was received that the Armistice has been signed. Therefore he was discharged on 14 Dec 1918. Remarks on his discharge due to demobilization read, “no absences from duty, sincere, honest and faithful.”

He returned to the home of his mother on Sweetwater Branch and resumed farming and blacksmithing.

On 1 Jan 1922, at the age of thirty-five, he married his neighbor girl, eighteen year old Zada CLAY. To them eight children were born: four girls and four boys. They were in chronological order, William James Clay, Mary Elizabeth May, Sarah Orbadean, Ella Louise, Martha Frances, Joseph Franklin, Paul Neal and Howard Earl. James Clay married Bertha MATHIS, had five children and died in an accident at age 28. Mary Elizabeth May married J. M. CLAYTON, had no children and died at age 55. Sarah Orbadean married James STOOKSBERRY, had no children and died at age 42. Ella Louise married Willard Lee CREAMER and has three children and is retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority Accounting Department. Martha Frances married Herman THOMPSON, had three children and died at age 58. Joe Frank married Petty PATTERSON and has four children. Paul Neal married Lou Ann BREWER and has three children. Howard Earl married Linda DUGGER and has two children.

Frank died in July 1968, after forty-six years of happily married life. He is buried at McGee Cemetery on Sweetwater, in sight of where he was born and grew up. His widow, Zada, died in July 1973, and was buried beside him in McGee Cemetery.

Dugger, Joseph Jason

DUGGER, Joseph Jason, Serial Number 4430796, served in the US Army from August 1918 to Joseph J. Dugger (duggerjj.jpg 33599 bytes)January 1919. He was as son of James and Martha WOODARD DUGGER. He was born 23 July 1896 on Factory Creek, Route 5, in Wayne County, Tennessee. He had three brothers, Blaine, Frank, and Ethridge; four sisters: Lessie, Rose, Belle, and Vada; and a half-brother, Andrew LARD.

At an early age he became a teacher in Wayne County, taking training at the Wayne County Teacher’s Institute. Then on 30 August 1918 he, at the age of 22, answered the call to serve his country. He was first a member of Co. C, section B, Students Army Training Center at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville until 27 Oct 1918. Then he was sent to Camp Forrest, Georgia and was in the 20th Engineers until 1 Jan 1919. He was honorably discharged 31 Jan 1919.

After his discharge, Jason returned to pursue his career in education. He earned college credits as he taught in Wayne and Lawrence counties. In 1929, he received his degree at State Teachers’ College, Murfreesboro, TN and later his masters degree at Peabody College, Nashville. He served as principal and teacher in Gordonsville, Cowan and Dickson County. About 1933, he returned to Wayne County to help care for his aged, ailing mother. He taught at Frank Hughes High School, Clifton, for a short time before becoming Superintendent of Schools of Wayne County in 1936 where he served until 1942. He then went to Illinois and taught for a few months until he received a government mission to the Baffin Islands.

While in the Baffin Islands, he remembered his sweetheart of more than twenty-five years with whom he had broken up. She was Miss Hattie Lee MURPHY of Columbia, Tennessee. He decided to send her a card. The correspondence picked up and when he came home in June, they were married, in 1943. They lived in Columbia for some time operating a Dairy Dip. Then a few years later they moved to Nashville running the Tennessee Motel on Dickerson Road until his death as a result of a massive heart attack on 3 March 1969. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Columbia, Tennessee. His wife was later buried beside him in 1987.

Dodd, Henry Clayton

DODD, Henry Clayton, was born about 1893 at Timbo, Arkansas and was killed 28 Aug 1934, Wayne Co., TN when a car hit the horse he was riding. He was the son of Bert B. DODD; his mother’s name is not known. He married Mary E. MORGAN and they had one son. They are all buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Cypress Inn, Wayne Co., TN.

He enlisted under serial number 3496757 as a Pvt. in Co. L, 306th Infantry. He was discharged at Fort Oglethorpe, GA on the 20th May 1919. He is described as being 5’11” tall, dark complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces from Aug. 1918 until 8 May 1919. He was awarded the Victory Medal on 18 April 1921 by the Army Recruiting Station, Birmingham, AL.

Davis, John Lewis

DAVIS, John Lewis, was born 1893, Beech Creek Community, Wayne County, Tennessee, the John L. Davis (davisjl.jpg 38479 bytes)son of Joseph Allen and Mitalda Jane RAY DAVIS. He enlisted in the Army in 1917. After basic training he was sent directly to France into the war zone. He was with a POW Escort Co.. John Lewis was discharged in 1919 and returned to the Beech Creek Community where he made is home. He married Pearl Lena WARREN and they have three children: Claud DAVIS, Floyd DAVIS and Mrs. Irene DAVIS CALDWELL.

Davis, Eunice Eatie


DAVIS, Eunice Eatie, born 1897, Beech Creek Community, Wayne County, Tennessee and died Eunice Eatie Davis (davisee.jpg 34308 bytes)1974. He was the son of Joseph Allen and Mitalda Jane RAY DAVIS. Eatie enlisted in the U.S. Army in June of 1918, the year World War I ended. He did not engage in fighting in this war due to the war ending. He had a foot injury and came out of the service until he recovered on 20 Feb 1920. He then reenlisted in the Navy until he retired in 1937. He was recalled in 1940 and served during World War II, retiring again in 1943. He made his home in Waynesboro, Tennessee. He married Josephine PICKETT. They have one daughter Carolyn DAVIS SEITZ (she had two children: Thomas Shayne SEITZ and Gregory Keith SEITZ) and one son, Steven E. DAVIS who married Michele EDWARDS (they have three children: Chelsea Jane, Andrew and Marigrace.)

Darby, Andrew Jackson

DARBY, Andrew Jackson, Serial Number 4252704, was born 26 Jan 1897 in Wayne County, Andrew J. Darby (darbyaj.jpg 33477 bytes)Tennessee, and died 8 Oct 1980 in Florence, Alabama. He was the son of William Henry DARBY and Cordelia WHITWORTH.

He was inducted into the Army on 6 September 1918 at Waynesboro, TN and arrived in Brest, France twenty-nine days later. Since he arrived in France only days before the war ended, he saw no action and had no military training. He served in France and Germany guarding German prisoners of war as they buried the dead in military cemetery. He was discharged 11 November 1919 from Camp Gordon, Georgia with a payment of $122.54 which included his pay, a $60.00 bonus and 34 cents per mile transportation home.

He married Margaret Pearl MCFALL on 25 Dec 1921. They had four children: Amy Dell DARBY, b. 17 July 1924, d. 31 May 1925; Mrs. Alta Marie DARBY WEEKS, b. 14 Sep 1926; Mrs. Christine DARBY KENNEDY, b. 13 May 1928 and Virgil Wayland DARBY, b. 30 March 1934, all born in Wayne County, Tennessee.

Andrew J. DARBY had one sister, Mrs. Alpha Lou DARBY WRIGHT and a half-sister, Mrs. Addie DARBY MONTGOMERY. He was a farmer all his life and a member of the American Legion Post in Florence, Alabama. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and is buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Lauderdale Co. Alabama

Daniel, Henry H.


DANIEL, Henry H., Serial Number 3496756, Pvt. Company H, 1st Infantry Replacement Henry H. Daniel (danielhh.jpg 28552 bytes)Regiment (PM). Enlisted 25 June 1918 at Waynesboro, TN and was discharged 21 Oct 1918 at Camp Gordon, GA. Henry was born 17 Nov 1894 in Wayne County, Tn and died 28 April 1968. He is buried at McGlamery Cemetery, Collinwood, TN. By profession he was a farmer. He was the son of Louis DANIEL (7 Jan 1858 – 7 Mar 1945) and Sarah THOMPSON (27 Jan 1859 – 21 Jan 1928) both of whom are buried at Butler Grove Cemetery. Henry married on 7 Sep 1919 to Ida NELSON who was born 30 Sep 1901.Henry H. and Ida NELSON DANIEL were the parents of three children: Everett DANIEL, Grady DANIEL and Effie DANIEL BRADLEY.

Culp, Edward Malcolm

CULP, EDWARD MALCOLM, 1LT, Medical Corps, U.S. Army, b. 2 June 1885, d. 4 Jan Edward M. Culp (culped.jpg 45609 bytes)1933, the son of William Buchanon CULP
and Mary DENTON. He married to Nora STRICKLIN, no children. He graduated from Vanderbilt and practiced medicine in Clifton for many years.
He was appointed 1LT in the Medical Corps on 22 Aug 1918, and was stationed at Camp Sheridan, AL, Camp McClellan, AL. He was honorably discharged on 18 Feb 1919.

His siblings were Fred, his twin brother; Benjamin, Elvis, Tom, and Clarence, Ada, Argent, Carrie, Nina, Delia and Tilda.

He was a cook in Co. D, 4th Training Reg. at Camp Pike, Arkansas. He was inducted on the 28 May 1918 at Waynesboro, Tennessee and
was discharged 14th Dec 1918.
