Darby, Andrew Jackson

DARBY, Andrew Jackson, Serial Number 4252704, was born 26 Jan 1897 in Wayne County, Andrew J. Darby (darbyaj.jpg 33477 bytes)Tennessee, and died 8 Oct 1980 in Florence, Alabama. He was the son of William Henry DARBY and Cordelia WHITWORTH.

He was inducted into the Army on 6 September 1918 at Waynesboro, TN and arrived in Brest, France twenty-nine days later. Since he arrived in France only days before the war ended, he saw no action and had no military training. He served in France and Germany guarding German prisoners of war as they buried the dead in military cemetery. He was discharged 11 November 1919 from Camp Gordon, Georgia with a payment of $122.54 which included his pay, a $60.00 bonus and 34 cents per mile transportation home.

He married Margaret Pearl MCFALL on 25 Dec 1921. They had four children: Amy Dell DARBY, b. 17 July 1924, d. 31 May 1925; Mrs. Alta Marie DARBY WEEKS, b. 14 Sep 1926; Mrs. Christine DARBY KENNEDY, b. 13 May 1928 and Virgil Wayland DARBY, b. 30 March 1934, all born in Wayne County, Tennessee.

Andrew J. DARBY had one sister, Mrs. Alpha Lou DARBY WRIGHT and a half-sister, Mrs. Addie DARBY MONTGOMERY. He was a farmer all his life and a member of the American Legion Post in Florence, Alabama. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and is buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Lauderdale Co. Alabama
