Duncan, James Whitten “Jamo”

DUNCAN, James Whitten “Jamo”, was born in Hardin County, Tennessee, the son of Alsa and Elizabeth DUNCAN. He was called to the Army when he was 23 years old on 6 Aug 1918. He served as Pvt., Battery “B” 137th Field Artillery. He served overseas from 6 Oct 1918 until 23 Dec 1918 and was discharged at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 13 Jan 1919. At enlistment he was 23 years old, a farmer. He had brown eyes, black hair, a dark complexion and was 6’1″ tall.

He married Sina WILBANKS and they had five children: Harry, Mary Elizabeth, Ruth, Patsy and Polly. Harry’s children are Harry. Jr., Larry, Janice, Ann, and Tommy Joe. Mary Elizabeth had one son, Ronnie; Ruth had three children: Maxel, Gary, and Deanna. Patsy had one daughter, Jean Ann. Polly had three children: Joe Denton, Jeff and Joan.

Jamo’s mother would tell his children about him riding a boat to Perryville, Tennessee and walking on home. They were all asleep when the dogs started barking and she heard someone whistling. She knew it was her precious son, Jamo, coming home. She awakened everyone in the house shouting, “Praise the Lord!” This was the best Christmas present she ever received.

He was a fine person and a wonderful father. He worked hard and taught his children well. He died in 1963. He was working for the State Highway Department and is buried in Savannah Memorial Gardens. Written by his daughter, Mary E. DUNCAN WILKERSON.
