MT. ZION BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY – SECTION 1

This is the older section located beside the white framed church building. Called the Simpson Family Cemetery at one time.

Buried in unmarked grave:

Maurene Hylton, d. 20 Oct 1932, Death Record # 414. Father, Coffee; Mother, Jackson. Widow of ? Hylton.

DEEDS –
Deed Book 126, Page 464 (1915) – Catherine Simpson to Thomas and Mary Helton. This deed conveyed 3 small lots, which would comprise the general area that would pass under the next referenced deed. No mention of a burial ground was made.
Deed Book 155, Page 494 (1921) – Thomas and Mary H. Helton to Trustees of the Cherokee Baptist Church. This conveyance represents the parcel property that the old church building stands on and includes what has been defined as the section 1 (old) graveyard. The deed however, excepts the graveyard proper from conveyance and named it the “Helton Graveyard”. The Simpson reference would be that Mary Helton was a Simpson and that the Simpsons had owned the property beforehand.

Deed Book 156, Page 119 (1922) – This deed simply changes the church name to Mt. Zion Baptist Church and indicates that the building had been built.
Various other deeds were researched and the deeds for the larger church compound were reviewed. No conveyance has been located to actually transfer title of the old graveyard, section 1, to the church itself.

Roll 687, Image 1376 (2010) – this deed changes the church name from Mt Zion Baptist Church to Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Jonesborough, Inc. Tract #2 is the exact same wording and exception as DB156/119 noted above.
