Maple Lawn Cemetery

Historical Background: Maple Lawn Cemetery was founded in 1890 by the Jonesborough Cemetery Company. The first meeting of the Jonesborough Cemetery Company was held November 11, 1890 in the Kirkpatrick and Williams Law Office in Jonesborough, Tennessee, with the first officers of the Maple Lawn Cemetery Association being elected— Judge Samuel J. Kirkpatrick, President and J. M. Fink, Secretary and Treasurer. The first board of directors was J. P. Smith, Judge Samuel J. Kirkpatrick, R. H. Dungan, J. A. February, and J. M. Fink. A Charter and By-Laws were written the following year in 1891. Burial lots were sold beginning in 1890 and are still being sold today. The first burial in Maple Lawn Cemetery, by the records held by the Association, was Mary A. Smith who died August 26, 1890. On February 4, 1893, S. B. Keefauver representing the town of Jonesborough Taxing District bought 15 lots in the Maple Lawn Cemetery for pauper burials for lots number 1-6 and 29-34 “to be set aside for public burial grounds.” Maple Lawn Cemetery Association president today is George Campbell, who is very helpful and deeply cares for this cemetery, and Priscilla Knode is the secretary. Records of the burials were kept by the Association in the main minute book of the Association from 1890 to 1968. Other records include obituaries, plot sales, and a plot map drawn in the 1980s. The Cemetery Association has kept very good records over the 123 years of Maple Lawn Cemetery.

Location and Condition: Located at 400 U.S. 11E in Jonesborough, Tennessee, beside the Washington County Justice Center and Washington County Sheriff’s Department. The cemetery is in excellent condition and has been taken care of very well by the Maple Lawn Cemetery Association.
