GPS Location: +36° 22.980, -82° 33.380

Location –

The burial ground is located at the northwest corner of the parcel at 453 Hartmantown Road, Harmony.  The exact location was pointed out by Mr Tommy Hale, a longtime adjacent property owner. He recalled seeing a few markers several decades ago, however they appear to be lost to time and perhaps a previous property owner. Although a bit overgrown, two minor depressions were observed and more could be there. That area is denoted as “Dunham’s Ridge” on various maps.  The remains of the old wagon road is still visible just west of the burial ground. The wagon road would have been along the western boundary of the Dunham tract running from Hartmantown Road to Harmony Road at Vance Hale Lane.

Deeds

Mary & Thomas Dunham conveyed to John Harrison (Deed Book 34 Page 252) – 1854 – 101-3/4 acres.  Although the metes & bounds are not overly clear, a rough plotting was able to be done.  Working from the Bennett topo map location, using a current tax map and house number 453 and backtracking, another plotting was done. The most recent deed for house number 453 (R520/I1722) backs up to deed (Deed Book 390 Page 73), which is for a 48-3/8 acre plot, which overlays the 101-3/4 plot.

Burials

It is unknown how many graves may be there. Two minor depressions were observed. The area is somewhat overgrown and difficult to survey. There are no signs of other markers or planted fieldstones.  As Mary & Thomas Dunham sold the 101-3/4 acres in 1854, there may be slaves buried at the site.  No further documentation has been found, to date.
