Praters Chapel (Old Warrington) Cemetery

Location of the cemetery is as follows: From Clifton, TN take Linden Highway 128 to Morrison Creek Road Highway 228. Approximately 1 to 2 miles Praters Chapel Church is on the left side of the road, the cemetery is behind the Church. There is a road around the cemetery and through the middle. We divided the cemetery into 4 sections. Section 1 (new section) is outside the perimeter of the road to the north. Section 2 is from the back by the woods to the grave of Rosanna Warrington (oldest tombstone in the cemetery). Section 3 from Rosanna to the road west (Jeter Road). Section 4 is by Highway 228 behind the church and southeast of the picnic area. Comments are by writers.

(NOTE – My grandmother, Dorothy Helen Hoke is buried there. She is listed as Dorothy H. Coxwell. Coxwell was the name she kept after her divorce from her third husband, Fred V. Coxwell. Her stone reads: Coxwell, Dorothy H., 1905-1981. She was born in New York November 21, 1905 and died in Clifton, Tennessee March 10, 1981. Dorothy Hoke lived in Clifton, Tennessee from 1977 or 1978 until her death.

“Two markers near the grave read: M.E.P. and C.P.P. On a foot stone C.P.P.”

“C.P.P.” denotes the markers for my father Claude Penrod Perry (he is the son of Dorothy Hoke’s marriage to her second husband, Claude Roland Perry, who she divorced in 1937). The other denotes the marker for my mother, Mary Elizabeth Clanton. Both of my parents are alive and well currently in Chattahoochee, Fl where Mom works for the State of Florida as a Psychiatric Nurse and Dad is in retirement. – Claude P Perry II, 10 June 2008.)

The Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery lies on the north side of US Highway 64W from Waynesboro. To reach the cemetery, travel north from the courthouse square in Waynesboro on highway 13 for a distance of ½ mile. Turn left to access the US64 bypass. Turn left on the bypass and travel approximately 10.2 miles. The cemetery is behind the church and was founded in 1942.

To reach the Mt. Hope Christian/Methodist Cemetery, travel north from the courthouse square in Waynesboro on TN Hwy. 13 for 1.6 miles. Turn right (east) onto Mt. Hope Rd. crossing the Arthur C. Skelton Memorial bridge. Continue on this road as the road goes to your left. Travel about .7 miles. Turn on a concrete drive to the left at the crest of a hill across the road from Mt. Hope United Methodist Church. This portion is Section 129B. The section behind the old Mt. Hope Christian Church building is 129A. Both sections have been incorporated into one alphabetical listing. The land for the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church portion of the cemetery was donated by the Christian family in 1940.

Location: Bundrant Hollow of Indian Creek, adjacent the Bundrant Hollow Road.

McMillan, Elder John, 1766 – 20 July 1836 age 70. His gravestone indicates that he was from North Carolina. There is no mention of him anywhere else. Evidently, he accompanied his children when they migrated to Wayne County between 1830 and 1839.

The Lynn Cemetery was more or less a family cemetery. Most, if not all, of those buried there were related to the Lynns. The list above reflects the order of their burial. It seems that the first one buried there, Elder John McMILLAN, was buried nearer the bottom of the slope and later burials were made moving up the rise. At some time during the 1960’s or 1970’s the cemetery was desecrated, the tombstones broken and even the graves were dug into.

In November 1995, a group of prisoners from the Clifton prison helped clear the cemetery and “recover” it from years of neglect. The stones are gradually being restored as best they can be. It should be remembered that the road system that we now enjoy did not always exist. Older generations depended upon creek beds and highland trails to travel on horseback and/or wagons. A study of the area by map shows that Mill Creek is not so far from Bundrant Hollow on Indian Creek. The McMILLANS lived very close to the cemetery if you look at a map of the area. In fact, there was a close proximity between Indian Creek, Mill Creek and Hog Creek. This explains how friendships, marriages and deaths were shared by our ancestors. Many fellowshipped in the same churches.

Lizard Glade Cemetery

Location: Inside the corporate limits of the City of Clifton on Carroll Street. The cemetery is located on the north side of the street.

Lizard Glade is the black cemetery in Clifton, probably the oldest separate black cemetery in Wayne County. The Cemetery is also called Lizard Lake on some death certificates. There are between 150 and 200 graves marked with field stones and perhaps as many more with no markings at all.

Lindsey Chapel Cemetery (Lauderdale Co., AL)

Lindsey’s Chapel Church & Cemetery is located in Lauderdale County north of Florence, Alabama on Alabama Highway # 157 approximately 1 mile south of Cypress Inn, Tennessee on the west side of the highway.

The church was built approximately 55 years ago with donations from residents of the community. Mr. Albert Lindsey, buried here, spearheaded the move to build the church. The church was built as a community church with no particular denominational ties. There are Confederate, World War II and Korean War veterans buried here. The oldest known grave is 1867. The oldest known person buried here was born in 1836. There are 20 graves with no headstones or information.

All names and dates were recorded from headstones and markers. They have been diligently checked for accuracy. The cemetery is well taken care of. This survey was completed August 02, 2003.

The Gallaher Cemetery is located east of the Natchez Trace Parkway northeast of Collinwood, Tennessee. To reach the cemetery turn east off the parkway just south of the Lower Glenrock rest area. Turn onto Glen Rock Rd. aka (Factory Creek Rd.) (Co. Rd. 1767 and travel 1 mile. The cemetery is on the left of the road. There are about one half dozen unknown graves here. One grave has a stone with what appears to have information etched into the stone, however it is not legible. This enumeration is current as of 10 May 2012.

To reach this cemetery, travel north from the square in Waynesboro for .6 mile and turn left. Go .1 mile to TN Highway 64 and turn left. Travel 1.2 miles and turn right at the flashing caution lights. This is the Old Clifton Turnpike. Travel about 5.6 miles and the cemetery is on the road bank by the church.
