Civil War Pension
Application
Submitted by Suzanne M. Pratt

In Invalid Pension Claim No. 541658 of George Hampton
of Co. F 6th Tenn. Infantry
The claimant
comes and makes oath as follows: My residence from the
time of my discharge to the present time has been in
the neighborhood of Fincastle Campbell County Tennessee
and my P.O. Fincastle, Campbell Co. Tenn.
At the time of my
enlistment I was of sound bodily health as I verily believe.
At Murfreesboro Tenn about January 1 1863 my Lungs became
affected with pains in my breast caused by exposure incident
to my service. I was excused from duty, but had no particular
medical treatment then. And near Atlanta Ga. in August 1864
while engaged in Battle there in charging through an open
field I fell exhausted from overheating when my heart became
affected from which I have never recovered. I was there taken
care of by comrades but had no medical treatment more than
consultation with Dr. Maupin our Surgeon about it. I just
took care of myself and was excused from duty a great part
of the time and was favored by the officers and comrades because
I would not go to the Hospital though unfit for duty by reason
of the disability so contracted.
I am a Blacksmith
by trade. The first medical treatment I had since my
discharge was by Dr. Thurman about the year 1867, he
has moved away from here and I do not know where he
is, the next treatment was by Dr. Joe Overton of Fincastle,
Campbell Co. Tenn, he began treatment about eleven years
ago and is still my physician.
During each
and every year since my discharge my said disability
so contracted has prevented me from usual manual labor
from month to month and from year to year, fully three
fourths of the time. The fact is my disability is continuous
but being a poor man I have to work all I can and on
many occasions in attempting to work would have to stop,
many times actually falling down, and on many occasions
requiring assistance the greater part of the time since
my discharge I have been confined to my room and bed.
