The Grand Army of the Republic
info donated by Laura

The Grand Army of the Republic, a society for men who fought for in the Union Army during the Civil War was formed in April 1866.  It was founded to strengthen fellowship among the men who fought to preserve the Union, to honor those killed and to provide care for their dependents. It was also instrumental in organizing the first Memorial Day on 30 May 1868.

If you suspect that any of these men listed is an ancestor, it is advisable that you refer to the two volumes of “Descriptive Records-Department of Tennessee GAR” for additional information.  These books contain entries of individuals name; age; birth place; residence; occupation; entry into service; final discharge; related service information; when and where died and other remarks.

The Milton L. Phillips Post # 27 of the GAR was organized at Jacksboro, Campbell County, TN on 17 Dec 1884. These are a list of its members.
