Obituaries

Helen Moorefield, 102, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT – Helen “Brownie” Moorefield, 102, died Wednesday afternoon (August 1, 2001) at Wexford House after a long illness. She was the wife of the late William Edward Moorefield and was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. She taught school for many years and was a member of the Arcadia Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Moorefield; a daughter, Marianne Bradley; brothers, Joseph, Vance and Nathan Newland; and sisters, Margaret Henderson, Mary Hord and Stella Newland. Survivors include two daughters, Helen Jeffery, Noblesville, Ind., and Jean Cole, Louisville, Ky.; a son, William Oliver Moorefield, Knoxville; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Arcadia Presbyterian Church. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Guy Tilley officiating. Interment will be in the Newland Family Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Newland Family Cemetery Fund, 4769 Bloomingdale Road, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660. Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown, is serving the Moorefield family.

Samuel Anderson Newland, 87, one of the best known residents and active churchmen of Sullivan County, was found dead in bed early yesterday morning at his home in Arcadia. Born and reared in Sullivan County, the son of Joseph and Rebecca Anderson Newland, the deceased had been one of the most progressive farmers in the county.  He had spent practically his entire life in this section, and was the last surviving member of his family. Mr. Newland’s life centered around his home and his church.  He was a charter member of the Arcadia Presbyterian church and had been an elder in the church for more than fifty years.  He was also a charter member of the Sullivan county Sunday school association and was known throughout the county for his Christian influence and his efforts in behalf of the church. Three sons and three daughters survive him.  They are: Joseph Newland, or Bristol, Vance P. Newland, of Oak Hill, W. VA, Nathan Newland of Arcadia, Mrs. Eldridge Hord of Church hill, Mrs. W. E. Moorefield of Beckley W. VA, and Miss Stella Newland of Arcadia. His wife died eleven years ago and a daughter, Mrs. A. P. Henderson of Johnson City died in March 1936. Funeral services will be held at the Arcadia Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, in charge of the Rev. Dan H. Graham, and the Rev. William McCorkle, of Kingsport. Interment will be made in the family cemetery on the old Newland home place. Nephews of the deceased will serve as pall bearers.

Mrs. Judith Newland             27 Feb 1923

Mrs. Judith Newland, aged 80 years, who died at her home near Arcadia, Tenn., Tuesday morning at 4 o’clock will be buried in the family cemetery near Arcadia.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock this afternoon by Dr. C. C. Carson, assisted by Rev. S. G. Ketron. Mrs. Newland is survived by her husband, Joseph M. Newland, and five children—Mrs. R. H. Taylor, of Hershey, Pa.; Misses Alice and Mattie Newland, Leslie and Joseph Newland.  She is also survived by three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Anderson, and one brother, Lewis Lessley. The pall-bearers were selected from Mrs. Newland’s nephews.  They will be Hugh Anderson, George Anderson, Bruce Anderson, Sam Lessley, Joseph Newland and Nathan Newland.  The flower-bearers will be selected from Mrs. Newland’s nieces.

  1. I was married to Kenneth Wayne Newland who has passed away his father was Carl Newland mother was Catberine Newland both who have passed away. We live in Ohio, was wondering if and how we are related. I know some of their people lived in and around Logan West Virginia years ago. Any information you could provide would be nice to pass on to my seven children. Thank you.

    • My name is Charles L. Newland, I live in the Arcadia Community of Sullivan County, TN. This is the community that Joseph Newland Sr. and wife Barbara Branstetter came to in 1805 from Wythe County, VA.

      To Judy Newland Mileto, I know some of the Newland relaticves lived in Logan county,KY in the early 1900’s. I would be glad to hear from you.
