State of Tennessee Wayne County§ Be it remembered that a quarterly County Court was began and held for the County of Wayne at the Court house in the town of Waynesboro on the 7th day it being the first Monday in July in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred & fifty one when and when the following Justices were present & presiding to wit: David J JONES Chr. LAFFERTY CARTER MONTAGUE BARKER WILSON VOORHIES WATKINS CYPERT CURTIS HAM BREWER HUCKABY WHITAKER DIXON A B GANT L B GANT YOUNG & POPE
Whereas satisfactory evidence has been exibted[sic] to the Court here that Robert CYPERT Late of said County is dead and was before death a United State pensioner and that he died on the 28th day of January 1851 it is therefore ordered by the Court that the Clerk of this Court Certify accordingly Came James HAGGARD who was at the January term 1851 of said County Court appointed Commissioner to take and make out in writing an accurate and complete list of the number of free white Male inhabitants who are twenty one years old and over and returned his list accordingly the aggregate of which is Thirteen hundred and seventy one verified by his oath which was received by the Court and ordered to be recorded
Upon motion to appropriate to Jesse S. ROSS and W CARTER each the sum of four dollars for their services as commissioners to sell certain lots in Waynesboro Those who voted in the affirmative were D J JONES, Chr. This day came Joseph N. ROBNETT in to Court and tendered to the Court his resignation to the office of Constable of Wayne County which was received by the Court and ordered to be recorded.
David J. JONES Chairman of this Court and in behalf of the Court [bound – crossed out] by the Consent of Thomas CARR orphan and George W. BROWN bound the said Thomas CARR to Marcus COOK [the said – crossed out] and the said D. J. JONES as Chr. And the said Marcus COOK entered into indentures binding the said Orphan to the said COOK util[sic] he attains the age of Eighteen years and the Court releases the said George W. BROWN from his obligation in the former indentures.

A settlement between Thomas H MABRY Trustee of Wayne County and A MONTAGUE and Jonathan MORRIS Commissioners appointed by this Court to settle with the revenue Collectors of said County the year 1851 was this day submitted to the Court which was Confirmed by the Court and ordered to be recorded
Came George WHITE and others a Jury summonds and sworn to view and mark out a change in the road of 2d Class leading from David TACKETTs to Waynesboro on the lands of T P CYPERT and report to the Court a change made as directed in the order which was received and ordered to be recorded
Came Jonathan MORRIS and others a Jury summonds and qualified to view and mark out a pass way sufficient for a third class road from Mary H SHIELDS so as to intersect the Waynesboro Road near John A KENNEDYs and report a way found as directed in said Order Which report was received and ordered to be recorded
Came Baker CYPERT and others a Jury summonds and qualified to view and report the expediency of disannulling the new Road and opening the old one leading from Baker CYPERTs to John McGLAMERYs and report to the Court that said change is necessary as the old road is the best which report was received and ordered to be recorded
Ordered by the Court that Mathew JOHNSON be appointed overseer of the road of 2d Class in the place of Charles LISLES and that he have the hands in the same bounds to work under his direction Isued July 23? 1851

Turnbow, Ambrose M.
Ambrose M. Turnbow was born in the State of Tennessee, in 1853, son of S. H. and Martha Turnbow, who were also natives of the State. The father was an agriculturist, and held different offices in the county for many years. He died in 1875, and his widow in 1878. Ambrose M. assisted his father on the farm, and at the age of twenty one became the architect of his own fortunes and engaged in farming. In 1874 he has united in marriage to Mary Carroll, who was born in Tennessee, in 1856, and is the mother of five children: William, James W., John, Delia, and an infant not named. In 1880 Mr. Turnbow purchased his present farm, which contains about 500 acres of fairly improved land, on which he raises corn, cotton and stock. he inherited the sum of $300 from his father’s estate. he started in life a poor boy, but energy, honesty and perseverance has accumulated considerable property, and is justly styled a leading citizen. He is a stanch Republican in politics.

The Steele cemetery is located on Beech Creek Road. To reach the cemetery, travel highway 128 from Clifton. About .1 mile past the Riverside Methodist Church, turn right onto Beech Creek Rd. & travel one mile. The cemetery is on a hillside to the left of the road. This cemetery is quite old with one birth year being 1810. There are several very old graves covered with large stone.

To reach the Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, from the courthouse square in Waynesboro. Travel east on highway 64 for 1.2 miles and turn left onto highway 99. Go approximately 2.5 miles to the Wayne County Memory Gardens. Continue on highway 99 by turning left at the Memory Gardens and go 4 miles. Turn left in front of the Topsy Fire Department onto Topsy Road and travel 3 miles. Turn right onto Pea Ridge Road and go .5 miles. Turn left onto Salem Church Rd. and go .3 miles down the hill. The church and cemetery are at the base of the hill overlooking the Buffalo River. The church was organized in 1821.
The following remarks are those of Clifford Allen Meredith on March 11, 2007 during a Wayne County Historical Society meeting at the church.
The first settlers came to Wayne County in 1815 by wagon train. The members of this party camped at a big spring overnight. Lovic & Jane Rasbury were traveling with the wagon train. Their child became ill, died and became the first grave in this cemetery. Jane Rasbury would not move on because her child was buried here.
The total members being ten, Lovic Rasbury, was chosen and ordained deacon. The door was opened for reception of members. Lonnie Staggs & Elijah Pope were received. Elder, Willis Dodson of Hickman County was the first pastor. Lovic Rasbury & Thomas Meredith were the deacons for many years. Elder, Edd Perkins became a deacon in 1834. By 1900 the membership was ninety-one.
About 1875, the log church building was replaced by the present building. In 1929, the association discontinued church at Salem. On November 15, 1953, the church was reorganized with R.G. Rhodes called as pastor with Stanley Hinson as assistant. Ordained deacons were Clifford Meredith, Clemon Meredith and Floyd Broadway. Present deacons are Jimmy Doyle Meredith & Clifford Allen Meredith, the latter also serving as church clerk. Presently, the pastor is Elder Clifton Johnson.

There are approximately 100 unknown graves in this cemetery. Of the approximately 450 persons presently buried here, 42% of those were born in the 1800’s. Of that number, 25% of those were born and also died in the 1800’s. Lovic & Jane Meredith, born 25 Feb 1781 & 21 Aug 1777 respectively were the parents of the child who was the first person buried here.

To reach the Cromwell Cross Roads Cemetery, from Collinwood, Tennessee, travel State Hwy. 13 south for approximately 2.1 miles. Turn right (west) onto Co. Rd. 203 and travel for approximately 5.2 miles. The cemetery is on the right side of the road beside the Cromwell Cross Roads Community Church.
This cemetery is located in western Wayne County, Tennessee in the Cromwell Cross Roads Community. It was established September 08, 1910. Ben Berry & John David Sherrill maintain the grounds. For burial information, contact Ben Berry at 1-931-724-5280 or John David Sherrill at 1-931-724-9795. The cemetery is well cared for and there is ample room for burials.
