Providence Church Cemetery

Location: On both sides of the hollow, south of Hoyt Johnson’s house on the Indian Creek Road. This church and cemetery were in existence between 1820 and 1910. According to Luther Lay and others, this was a large cemetery. Providence Church was one of the “mother churches” of the Indian Creek Baptist Association, founded in the 1830’s. About 1910, the church moved from this location to Memorial Church. It is not known what happened to the tombstones and markers in the cemetery. Only a few field stones now remain. Like many abandoned cemeteries in Wayne County, the stones were probably removed by the land owner for the purpose of cultivation of the land. The land here has been under cultivation since about 1920.

From available information, the following kust of burials is provided. It is possible that some of these may be buried in other cemeteries, but this is the best reconstruction available at this time.
