Additional Information
There is a sign at the cemetery which has a printed history of the cemetery by Raymond Hilliard, treasurer of the Stophel Cemetery Fund. The history reads in part-
“…in the mid 1800’s my great-grandfather David Stophel gave approximately one acre of land off of Old Jonesboro Road on top of a knoll, just behind the Church of Bristol, Sullivan County, Bristol, Tennessee to be used as a community cemetery. To my knowledge, he was the first person to be buried in the cemetery on or about 14 Jul 1897…”
