CARNEY, MRS. CORA L., 75, Graysville, Tenn., lifelong resident of Rhea County, died early Sunday night in a Rhea County hospital. She was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Montgomery Clark. She was a member of the Old Washington Baptist church and a former school teacher of Rhea County. She is survived by her husband, J. A. Carney, Graysville; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Smith, Hopkinsville, Ky.; one son, Clark Carney, Hixson, Tenn., five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. I. L. Mathis, Graysville; two brothers, Jeff Clark, Dayton; Fred Clark, Hixson; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ernest Clark. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:30 from the Old Washington Baptist Church with the Rev. J. L. Gates and Don Nelms officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the service. Burial in Rhea Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Bill Pefrey, Raso Polston, Fred Mullins, Oscar Sharp, Ray Perry and Lee Paylor. Honorary pallbearers will be E. L. Tipps, Melvin Green, Dr. J. J. Rodgers, J. M. Abel, Earl Garrison, Finley Taylor, Grover Aikman, Ed Hicks, Ed Pierce, Fred Dennis and Spurgeon Harrison. The body is at the funeral home. Sawyers, Dayton in charge.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Old Washington Baptist Church with the Rev. J.L. Gates and the Rev. J.E. Cunningham officiating. Interment in Rhea Memory Gardens. Sawyers, Dayton in charge.

COLLINS – Walter, 63, died at his home in the Clear Creek community near Dayton, Tenn., Monday. He was the son of the late J. D. and Margaret Houston Collins, pioneer settlers of Rhea County. He was a prominent farmer of the Clear Creek community until retiring about four years ago because of ill health. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Kate Carney Collins; daughter, Mrs. John West; son, Rattis; five grandchildren, all of the Clear Creek community; two brothers, John and Cleo Collins. Funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the home by Revs. Theo Harris and Houk Fairchild. Pallbearers, Garland Carney, Junior Carney, Elvis Atkinson, Raso Polston, Stewart McClure, Clark Carney, John Rector, Paul Smith; honorary, Morgan Day, Tom Houston, Jeff Sherrill. Interment in Montgomery Cemetery. Sawyer’s funeral Service, Dayton, in charge.

Collins – Mrs. Lela Kate, 83, of Dayton, Tenn., died in the Rhea County hospital Monday evening. She was a member of the Concord Methodist Church and a lifelong resident of Rhea County. She is survived by one son, Martin Rattis Collins, Dayton, Tenn.; two brothers, Will Carney of Chattanooga, and Mynatt Carney, of Dayton, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Revs. Grady Roddy and S.H. Fairchild officiating. Interment in the Montgomery Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Clark, Clarke Hurst, Elvin Atkinson, Jimmy Day, Cleo Wilkins, Jay Wood, Arthur Smith and Jimmy Wilkey. The body will remain at the funeral home. Mrs. Nora Bell East Carney, wife of W.H. Carney, passed away at the home of her son, Roy C. Carney in Chattanooga at noon Sunday.  She is survived by her husband, six sons: Roy and Brownie of Chattanooga, George and Jack Carney of Pontiac, Mich.,  SFC Wayne Carney with the U.S. Army stationed in New York,  M/Sgt, Alfred Carney, veteran of Korea, now in Walter Reed Army Hospital at Washington, D.C.;  three daughters: Mrs. Arnet [Una] Brown of Pontiac,  Mrs. Clyde [Edna] Gideon of Old Washington,  Mrs. Audrey [Amy] Scroggins of Cumberland, N.C., two brothers: Jim East of Chattanooga and Lonnie East of Oak Ridge.   Mrs. Carney was converted at the Bethel Methodist Church, Rockwood, 50 years ago and remained a member until her death.  Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Old Washington Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Hulen of Chattanooga, the Rev. J.L. Gates, pastor, and the Rev. Ernest Clark officiating.  Burial in Montgomery Cemetery.  Sawyers in charge.

CARNEY, William Henry, 92, of the Old Washington community, Rt. 1, Dayton, Tenn., died in a Chattanooga hospital early Saturday morning. He was the son of the late Jim and Rebecca Franklin Carney, pioneer settlers of Rhea County. He was a retired farmer, and was of the Methodist faith. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Edna Gideon of Rt. 1, Dayton; Mrs. Una Brown, Pontiac, Mich., and Mrs. Amy Scroggins, Cumberland, N.C.; five sons, Wayne Carney, Louisville, Ky.; Jack and George Carney, both of Pontiac; Brownie Carney, Hixson; Alfred Ray Carney, C. Sgt. M, U.S. Army, Germany; one brother, Mynatt Carney, Rt. 1 Dayton; 24 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The body will remain at the funeral home. Arrangements will be announced by Coulter-Garrison-Green Funeral Home, Dayton.

Carney, Nell Worthington, 88, of Route 4, Dayton, Tenn., died Thursday at her residence. A former schoolteacher, she was employed by the Dayton Herald and the Chattanooga News-Free Press. A member of Old Washington Baptist Church, she was involved in its music ministry and was a Sunday school teacher for 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Carney. Survivors include five sons, Warren and Charles Carney, both of Dayton, Walter Agnew Carney, Jacksonville, Ark., Bryan Carney, Pottervillle, Mich., and Doyle Carney, Albertville, Ala.; four daughters, Ethel Marler, Harrison, Mich., Helen DeVault, Laingsburg, Mich., Irene Thornburg, Red Band, and Imogene Harris, Dayton; three stepdaughters, Bertha Worthington, Dayton, Bonnie Bethune, Henagar, Ala., and Cleo Messer, Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Charlie, Jack and Walter Worthington, all of Battle Creek, Mich; two sisters, Gladys Burdette, Flint, Mich., and Clara Smith, Red Bank; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Old Washington Baptist Church with the Rev. J.L. Gates officiating. Burial will be in Montgomery Cemetery in the Old Washington community. Memorial contributions may be made to the music department of Old Washington Baptist Church. The family is receiving friends at Sawyer’s Funeral Service, Dayton.

CARNEY, James Thomas, 76, a retired farmer and lifelong citizen of Rhea County, passed away at his home in the Washington community at an early hour Sunday night. He was an active member of the Washington Baptist Church, where he has been a deacon 25 years, most of that time teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nell Worthington Carney; 10 daughters, Mrs. Annie Smith, Mrs. Bertha Worthington, Mrs. Grace Byrd. Mrs. Cleo Henderson, Mrs. J.B. Marler, Misses Irene and Imogene Carney, all of Dayton, Route 1; Mrs. Floyd Bethune, Henagar, Ala.; Mrs. Elmina Duncan, Chattanooga, and Mrs. J.P. DeVault, Laingsburg, Mich.; six sons, James, Warren and Charles of Dayton; Bryan and Doyle of Laingsburg Mich., and Agnew a member of the U.S. Air Force at Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Washington Baptist Church, with the Rev. C.E. McDonald and the Rev. W. F. Lingerfelt officiating. The following nephews will be pallbearers: Garland, George, Brownie, Ray and Junior Carney and Rattis Collins. Honorary pallbearers will be Will Coxey, Ray Perry, John Walker, Walter Price, Grover Aikman, Reece Cooley, Will Palfrey, Carl G. Dyer and Charlie Price. Interment in Montgomery Cemetery. Sawyers Funeral Service, Dayton, in charge.

CARNEY, James Calhoun (1921)

CARNEY, James Calhoun   12 Oct 1844 – 12 Jan 1921

CARNEY, J. C.,  Dayton, Tenn., Jan. 13 – The funeral of J. C. Carney who died Wednesday morning at his home, nine miles above town, after an illness of six weeks, was held Thursday afternoon at the Clear Creek church, conducted by the Revs. Smith and Mathis. The Masonic lodge of Dayton conducted the burial services at Montgomery Cemetery, where the interment was made. Mr. Carney was 76 years of age. He had been a prominent resident of Rhea County for over fifty years. He was born in North Carolina. Mr. Carney was a member of the M. E. Church, South. He is survived by his wife and a large family of children. The pallbearers were: Mess‘s. Pat Wilkey, W.G, Taylor, W.L. Locke, J.H. Locke, W.C. Bailey, S.C. Stout, James S. Frazier and R.L. Godsey.
