CARNEY, James Thomas  28 Oct 1873 –  22 May 1949

CARNEY, James Thomas, 76, a retired farmer and lifelong citizen of Rhea County, passed away at his home in the Washington community at an early hour Sunday night. He was an active member of the Washington Baptist Church, where he has been a deacon 25 years, most of that time teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nell Worthington Carney; 10 daughters, Mrs. Annie Smith, Mrs. Bertha Worthington, Mrs. Grace Byrd. Mrs. Cleo Henderson, Mrs. J.B. Marler, Misses Irene and Imogene Carney, all of Dayton, Route 1; Mrs. Floyd Bethune, Henagar, Ala.; Mrs. Elmina Duncan, Chattanooga, and Mrs. J.P. DeVault, Laingsburg, Mich.; six sons, James, Warren and Charles of Dayton; Bryan and Doyle of Laingsburg Mich., and Agnew a member of the U.S. Air Force at Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Washington Baptist Church, with the Rev. C.E. McDonald and the Rev. W. F. Lingerfelt officiating. The following nephews will be pallbearers: Garland, George, Brownie, Ray and Junior Carney and Rattis Collins. Honorary pallbearers will be Will Coxey, Ray Perry, John Walker, Walter Price, Grover Aikman, Reece Cooley, Will Palfrey, Carl G. Dyer and Charlie Price. Interment in Montgomery Cemetery. Sawyers Funeral Service, Dayton, in charge.
