Collection of Davis Family Letters

These wonderful old letters are provided courtesy of Mary Davis-Odom, Modom132@aol.com of Union Parish, Louisiana who has also provided the following background information:

My grandfather Matthew Hill Davis, great grandfather John Boswell Davis and great, great grandfather David Davis lived near Wildersville, in the northeast region of Henderson County, back in the early 1800’s. They attended church at Christian Chapel Church. My great grandfather John Boswell Davis lived on Cub Creek. David Davis had a family burial ground on his homeplace where the family and some neighbors were buried back in 1840-1850. My great grandparents James and Polly Hodge were buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. I have copies of letters dated from 1838 to 1851 that David Davis and his children wrote to his son Green A. Davis, who settled in Union Parish, Louisiana. David Davis got his mail at Pleasant Exchange and Tippecanoe post offices. Pleasant Exchange post office operated in Henderson County from 1831 until 1867, with the exception of a few years in the late 1830s up until 1844, when the Tippecanoe post office operated in its place. My father left Tennessee when he was 14 years old (1896) and moved to Texas. He never knew much about his family because they did not keep in touch. Mrs. John Calhoun, Ruston, La., has the original letters and she was nice enough to let us have copies. Her husband was a direct descendant of David Davis through his son, Green A. Davis.

David Davis (1785-1859), son of John Boswell and Sarah Hill Davis, married Jane Mongomery, b. 1786. They lived in Henderson County.
