US Army in Huntingdon, Carroll Co., TN on Sun, 27 Dec 1863.
Jesse was sent to Union City, TN where his unit which was
commanded by Col Isaac R. Hawkins was attacked by Confederate
Colonel Duckworth only 3 months after his enlistment. There was
one killed and Jesse was one of two or three that were wounded
before the unit surrendered. As a prisoner, he was taken to
Andersonville Prison near Americus, GA where after several months,
he escaped and walked to rejoin a fragment of his unit stationed
in Paducah,KY in Sept of 1864. He was treated for his gunshot
wound in the leg which became infected and rheumatism and was
moved to Joe Holt Army Hospital at Jeffersonville, IN where he
remained hospitalized until he was discharged on Surgeon's
Certificate of Disability on 1 July 1865.)

(He was courtmartialed in Aug of 1864 for bringing a woman
into camp and introducing her as his wife when he had another
legal wife. He went AWOL after courtmartial. He was from
Michigan not from the West Tenn area.
>From the Report of Captain John W. Beatty, 7th Tennessee Cavalry
(U.S.), on the capture of Union City, dated 12 April 1864
(O.R., I-32-1, pp. 542-544.: "I have the honor to
report to you that I have made my escape from the enemy, after
being surrendered, ... at Union City, Tenn., on the 24th of
March, after fighting six hours and repulsing the enemy four times.
The enemy drove in our pickets at 4 a.m., 24th March, and skirmishing
commenced soon after, and by sunrise our camps were entirely
surrounded. Their force numbered about 1,500, commanded by
Colonels Faulkner, Bell, Duckworth, Faris, Freeman, Tansil,
and Russell. They first made a charge, mounted, and finding
that they were losing a great many men and horses, dismounted
and made three unsuccessful charges with heavy losses in killed
and wounded. Finding it impossible to rout our forces from their
works, fell back in great confusion, taking shelter behind
fallen timber, stumps, &c., their sharpshooters keeping up a
continuous fire until fifteen minutes to 11 o'clock, when they
ceased firing and sent in a flag of truce, demanding an
unconditional surrender of our force ..." The Federal
commander decided to surrender, apparently without much
support from his subordinates.
(Faulkner's command was the 12th Kentucky Cavalry,
Duckworth's the 7th Tennessee Cavalry, and Faris
had a company of Barteau's 22nd Tennessee Cavalry.
Freeman might refer to Lt. Freeman who was in command
of Co. G of the 20th at the time.)
The attack on Union City was designed to distract attention
from Forrest's main effort at Paducah. Most sources
(including the Hollis and Carter diaries) indicate that
Russell's 20th was part of the Paducah effort, not at
Union City; it appears that Capt. Beatty was
mistaken.)

I saw your 7th Tennessee Cavalry Roster USA (Union) and checked to see if my g.g.uncle who died at Andersonville was listed in Company M. There is a Private John Stewart listed in Company M but no other details. This is my uncle’s story…
My uncle was John Richardson Stewart of Henderson County TN. He was born May 6, 1835 in Anson County NC, the son of Catherine Richardson Stewart and Alfred Merriel Stewart, SR. When John R was about 18, his then widowed mother and her 8 children loaded their wagon(s), left their homes in NC with a group led by Elder Hosea Preslar, crossed the mountains and rivers and settled in Henderson County near Lexington TN. John was a school teacher and farmer. He lived with and supported his widowed mother and two older unmarried sisters.
On July 6, 1863 at Adamsville, TN John joined the 7th Tennessee Cavalry, Company M as a private for a three year enlistment under the command of Colonel Isaac Roberts Hawkins.
While his unit was at Union City TN John was detailed to the Adjutant General’s Office, probably because he was well educated and could read and write. His military records indicate he was promoted to Sergeant sometime later.
On March 24, 1864 John and his unit were captured at Union City TN by forces of Nathan Bedford Forrest. The men had the misfortune of being sent to the Andersonville Prisoner of War Stockade in Georgia. Just six months later John died in the prison hospital there of scorbutus (scurvy) and starvation on October 3, 1864. However his remains were not identified and he was buried in an Unknown Soldier grave. Also, when I inquired about John, Andersonville could find no record of his being there.
There are several possible reasons why he was not identified and his records not found… 1. Since he had been detailed to the Adjutant’s Office, his military records were not with his company. 2. His middle initial R written in _cursive_ was easily mistaken for an “A” or a “K” on his records. 3. So many prisoners were dying daily at Andersonville and in the confusion his remains were not identified. 4. His name on the prison Hospital Registry Record was badly ink-smudged. After I sent a copy of his Prisoner of War Record to Andersonville they were able to find his name on the Hospital Registry Record and confirm his death there.
As a matter of information, Andersonville advised me to request a Memorial Marker for John’s hometown cemetery. The marker was requested and received. It was placed in Union Hill Cemetery near Lexington TN and in June of this year the family held a memorial service to honor John’s service and sacrifice to preserve the Union.
Also, John’s two younger brothers served their country in Company E, 11th Illinois Infantry. They were William R Stewart and Alfred Merriel Stewart, JR, (my g.grandfather), both of Henderson County TN. They survived the war and were able to return to their homes.
Please show John’s middle initial R or name Richardson on this list and that he was promoted to Sergeant and that he died at Andersonville.
Respectfully,
Shirley Stewart Milford
Memphis TN
ssmilford@bellsouth.net
Shirley, I had heard from Stewart family kin about the memorial service but couldn’t attend. William Robison Stewart was my great grandfather….interesting bit of history: he and his brother Alfred Merrill Stewart’s names can be found on the Illinois monument at Vicksburg National Military Park as members of the unit you mention above.
Best regards
John Copeland
My Great Great Grandfather John C. Reed listed as a Private in Company A was imprisoned at Camp Andersonville Prison and died there on 26 June 1864. His grave marker is 2519. I was there in 2010. As far as I can tell I am the only one to ever visit his grave. I found it hard to leave that day. My cousin Arthur Gale Barker another of his great great grandsons has since visited his grave.
My great grandfather, E.M. Kelly, was listed as a soldier with Capt.Kirks unit according to discharge and pension papers. However his name does not appear on those in his company.
