City Fathers
At the municipal election held last Saturday the following Aldermen were elected by handsome majorities: Alvin WARREN, G. W. NEWBERN, John KENNY, Martin PIRTLE, R. S. HARDY, R. G. CRAWFORD, who upon first meeting will proceed to elect a mayor, recorder, and town constable. It is hoped that the new board will make some improvements upon the streets and sidewalks, and thus incur the special favor of all who are opposed to wading shoe-mouth deep in mud and slush. Arrest offenders, pile on the fines, create a fund and go to work like “city dads” of the good old kind!

There is no longer any room for doubt; a monument to the memory of our lamented dead will be erected in a few months, and those who have not contributed to the sacred fund should lose no time in doing so, as the estimable ladies who have so faithfully endeavored to discharge their self-imposed task are anxious to complete their labors and have erected in our midst a lasting tribute to the valor and manhood of those who have passed through the dark valley and shadow of death. Considerable money has been collected, yet the fund is incomplete, and certainly our citizens will aid the society now that victory is so near at hand. All contributions should be handed over to the Secretary, Mr. A. T. MCNEAL, who will receipt for the same and pass the amount to the Treasurer, R. S. HARDY, Esq. Hand in your mite before it is too late, and thus win yourself a clear conscience to the last. Open your purse will willing hand and vote remembrance to the dead.

For several months past, R. S. HARDY, Esq., one of our most worthy citizens, has been acting as the duly commissioned post master for this place, discharging the duties of the office faithfully and satisfactorily to all. Only two or three days since he was notified that his salary was fixed at $50 per quarter; a sum entirely too low for the services rendered, and the consequence is, that he refuses to hold the position. We are credibly informed that the office here clears over five hundred dollars per annum, and that formerly the salary of the post master was sixty dollars on the first hundred and fifty dollars on every additional hundred realized. Why this has been changed we are not able to state, but one thing is certain that our citizens generally, are loath to part with the services of R. S. Hardy, yet no one can complain of the course pursued by him in giving up the office, for its duties compelled him to devote much time and attention without fairly compensated. We do not believe that the salary allowed is sufficient and that it will be a hard matter to find any one who will permanently hold the position of post master at Bolivar for the paltry sum of two hundred dollars a year.
