Joseph Lewis SMITH, 68, a retired carrier of the Nashville Banner, died Wednesday in St. Thomas Hospital after an extended illness. Prayer services will be held at Roesch-Patton, Dorris & Charlton funeral home. Regular services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pond Presbyterian Church in Dickson. Burial will be in the Adams’ family cemetery in Dickson County. Mr. Smith worked intermittently for Newspaper Printing Corp., agent for the Banner and The Tennessean, in various circulation capacities for a total of 48 years until his retirement in 1972. At one time, he was a West Nashville route manager. He was a native of Dickson County and a son of the late Charles Romuald and Lue Eldridge Smith. He was married to the former Clarice Pendergrass. Mr. Smith was a member of Pond Presbyterian Church. Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Norma S. Drake and Mrs. Connie S. Schmutz, both of Nashville; five sons, Lt. Col. James Romuald Smith, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., Joseph Connor Smith, Paul Terry Smith and Lewis Dean Smith, all of Dickson, and Michael Shawn Smith, Nashville; a brother, Charles William Smith, Dickson; 20 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
