Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren — 1 Comment

  1. March 22, 2018/A. Carroll Thomas/Dandridge, TN

Over the course of the recent several years, I must admit to only a casual interest in my family history. In the recent few days after stumbling across the Pleasant Hill cemetery index, I have become more attuned to how interesting that history may be. Just today, as an example, I fully realized that the first elder of the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, John A. Bowman, was my great, great grandfather – the line being through his daughter, Elizabeth who was married (wedding ceremony performed by her father John A Bowman in 1863) to my great grandfather, Jacob Wine who became a “minister in the second degree” of the Pleasant Hill church in 1874. Further down the line and after Jacob helped to build and establish the French Broad Church of the Brethren (I am a member) in White Pine, TN in 1874 and was its first minister, he and Elizabeth had several children (eight, I believe) the youngest of which, Elijah, is my grandfather and whose daughter, Trula Wine (Thomas) is my mother.
Without a doubt, the number of great, great grandchildren of John A Bowman can perhaps be counted in the hundreds. But, through my mother Trula, her father Elijah and his mother Elizabeth, the John A Bowman family bible has come into my possession. This too I have realized for some time often thinking I should somehow reach out to others especially those of Bowman descent but never knowing where to start. The Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren history having been established in 1841 and as revealed in its well ordered cemetery index perhaps may offer a starting point.
I realize there may be a need for brevity in this format. But, as another note of possible interest to those around Pleasant Hill, I’d like to add that down the same line back to my great grandparents, Jacob and Elizabeth Wine, I have also come into possession of a friendship (signature?) quilt pieced/created for Jacob and Elizabeth by 25 ladies around the Tennessee/Virginia border environs of Pleasant Hill. One of those ladies, Catherine Wine, may be listed in the Pleasant Hill cemetery index. Despite its age dating back to 1873 and some early use, the quilt remains in relatively good shape with 25 legible signatures.
Should there be interest on the part of the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, its membership and/or relatives, I am prepared to share further info/photos. Please use the email address that accompanies this submission as contact.
Thank you and have a blessed day, A. Carroll Thomas
