Mullins Cemetery
Located behind 6917 Lone Star Road, this cemetery is fenced and well-kept. There are two funeral home markers with no names or dates and several with only last names. I assume these are to hold spots, as the markers look new. There are around twenty graves marked by fieldstones and as many as ten unmarked graves.
Photographed Jul 2003 by Donna Briggs, updated 5 Jan 2005 by Gary Sawyer and Donna Briggs, members of the Cemetery Survey Team of Northeast Tennessee.

If there are any Murrays or Conkins that happen upon this, and have any info, I would appreciate it. My name is Robert Murray. My father was Allie Reece Jr and his father Allie Reece Murray sr. The R.A. Murray buried here is my great grandfather Role Murray. Buried next to him is his first wife Emmaline Conkin. After she died in 1916, Role married Denicey Smith (Roberts)(Crawford). Role’s father was William Murray, born around 1835 either in Sullivan (Blair’s gap area) or Hawkins county. If anyone can fill in any info about the history of the Conkin or Crawford families in the area, let me know.
Robert, I also am a Conkin descendant and have researched this line for more than a decade. I have Mary Emmeline Conkin (married to Reece Murray) on my tree. She was born 1878 to James K Polk Conkin and Martha Ellen Mowell. They has ten known children and James and his second wife had five children, James was the son of Hagan Conkin and Barbary Moulton. Hagan died during the Civil War in a hospital near Murfreesboro, TN and Barbary raised their large family on her own. Hagans was the son of John Conkin and Mary Polly Jackson (believed to have been the daughter of Jonathan Jackson and wife, Mary ,,#urnsme unknown…but no proof of her parents’s names exists). John and Mary prolly were married in 1812 in Washington County, TN and John served in the war of 1812. John was the son of George Conkin and Anna Skelton who (according to a family bio) were married in Virginia then George is found in the 1796 tax record for Sullivan County, TN and his name appears on several deeds, etc as a witness. There is a passenger record for a George Conkin arriving in the Colonies in 1760s on ship Justita which transported prisoners, slaves and indentured servants. A court record is found in London for a George Conkin found guilty of stealing a saddle and being “transported” to Colonies and sentenced as an indentured servant for seven years. After that debt was laid, he was free to purchase land and marry, Conkin family researchers have identified one daughter and sons John, Moses, William, George, Jr. and Jacob. Only John remained in Sullivan Cty and the others migrated to KY, Arkansas, indiana, and Missouri and William may have ended up in California. Hope this helps you.
Patty, I apologize for taking so long to respond but I’ve had some unexpected health problems that have kept me distracted. The info you provided was a huge help in filling in the holes in my knowledge. Even though that area of Sullivan county is, even on old maps, known as Conkintown shows that, even though John was the only one who stayed in Sullivan county, he and his descendants had a big impact on the area. My grandfather was the son of Role (or Roley) murray and Emma Murray, aka Mary Emmeline Conkin. They were married young, maybe teenagers. Roley was born in 1872 probably not far from where he died in 1930. Emma was born around the same time but unfortunately, as was common back then for women, she died early in 1916. They had a few children together. But he remarried Denicey Roberts, and they had my grandfather Reece Murray sr in 1929,when Roley was in his late 50s. Roley died of a stroke when my grandfather Reece was 1 year old and Denicey married a Crawford. So, Reece grew up as the literal red headed step child, since Emma and Roleys kids were grown up, and Deniceys Crawford kids didn’t accept him as a real sibling, at least that’s what he thought. Maybe it was common practice back then, but when Roley died his wife Denicey had him buried next to his first wife Emma. And I always imagined that part of that was because she knew that Emma was the one he truly loved. Marriage was a practical thing back then so maybe I’m just hoping there was a story of young love with Roley and Emma. But who knows. Thanks again for the help. I live 2 hours away in Knoxville but the rest of the Murrays still live in Sullivan county so I try to visit the Mullins cemetery and Roley and Emma every chance I get.
