OWEN, Samuel Alexander, minister of the gospel; born near Covington, Tenn., Feb. 16, 1865; Welsh-German descent; son of Isaac W. and Eveline (Burkhardt) OWEN; father’s occupation, farmer, public official; educated Covington (Tenn.) High School, Union University, Jackson, Tenn., and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky.; graduated from Union University, A.B., June, 1893, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, degrees Th. G. and Th. B., June, 1897; in early life worked on farm and helped to sustain his widowed mother from 14 years old; had a hard battle with poverty to get an education; acting as janitor of college, selling books, teaching school during vacation; ordained minister, 1893; married twice, first Kathryn McAFEE, Oct. 19, 1899, second Ella PREWITT, May 11, 1910; member of K.P.; Independent; member of Baptist church; served as pastor of churches in Crockett and Dyer counties, Tenn.; was pastor in Richmond, Ky., 1897-1899; Newbern, Tenn., 1900-1906; Lexington, Ky., 1901-1902; recent charges at Horse Cave, Ky., Whiteveille [sic], Tenn., and McMinnville, Tenn.
