JONES, Shelby Ellette, minister, teacher; born near Mandola, Scott Co., Va., Nov. 30, 1854; Welsh and English descent; son of Y. H. and Martha (Livingston) JONES; father’s occupation, physician; paternal grandparents W. H. and Arty (Sams) JONES, maternal grandparents Peter and Katherine (Benham) LIVINGSTON; graduated from Carson and Newman College, Jefferson City, Tenn., with degree A. B. 1877, A. M. 1877, D.D. 1888; married Ida Grace TYLER, July 23, 1876; three times elected professor in Carson and Newman College; held the chair of Latin and Greek a short time, chair of natural science two years, chair of mathematics 20 years, in the meantime caught taught homiletics and theology, some of his students are now occupying important pulpits in different parts of U. S.; among his most prominent pastorates were; 1st Baptist church, Jefferson City, 1st Baptist church Murfreesboro, 1st Baptist church Morristown, South Side Baptist church, Knoxville, Tenn.; he is now professor of mathematics Carson and Newman College and pastor of Dandridge, New Market and Whitesburg, Tenn., Baptist churches; Republican; member of the Missionary Baptist church.
