State of Tennessee, Wayne County Be it remembered that a quarterly County Court was began& held for the County of Wayne at the Court house in the town of Waynesboro on the first day it being the first Monday in July in the year of our Lord one Thousand eight hundred and fifty the following Justices of the peace present and presiding (to wit) D J JONES Chr. YOUNG LAFFERTY JOBE CARTER BURNS MONTAGUE BARKER WILSON VOORHIES GANT WALTKINS CURTIS BREWER HAM DIXON LEE & RODGERS

Came J P VOORHIES & others who was at a former term of this court appointed a Jury of View to view and mark out so as to change the road leading up Buffalo River and make the following report Begin at David VOORHIES and runne [sic] to John CRAIGs which report was [Ordered-crossed out] received by the Court and ordered to be recorded

Ordered by the Court that E POLLACK be appointed Overseer of the opening and Keeping up the road as viewed and marked out by J P VOORHIES & others and that he have the following hands George I WALKER Samuel VOORHIES David VOORHIES hands James VOORHIES George W PERY James McCAN Solom COUCH, and all the hands in the bounds to work under his direction Isued July 25th 1850

A settlement between Wm JONES Clerk of this Court and John N MARTIN Guardian of the minor heirs of Nathaniel MARTIN dec’d was this day submitted to the Court which was received by the Court & ordered to be recorded

Ordered by the Court Jonathan MORRIS James ANDERSON & John McDOUGAL be appointed a committee to superintend the Painting outside the wood work [Window Casing – crossed out]& c of the Court house in Waynesboro

Came James ANDERSON Administrator of the Estate of Jesse COPELAND Dec’d and returned into court an Inventory of said Estate verified by his oath which was received and ordered to be recorded

Upon motion to appropriate to John McDOUGAL & others entitled thereto the sum of fifteen 50/100 [twenty one 25/100 [ – crossed out] dollars in a bill of cost against Wayne County to wit State of Tennessee vs Stephen PARSLEY & others James P CLARK Clerk of Supreme Court five 75/100 dollars Clerk John McDOUGAL five 75/100 dollars Sheriff PUGH four dollars those who voted in the affirmative were D J JONES Chr. Notice was this day given to the Court by Katherine COPELAND widow of Jesse COPELAND Dec’d that she will apply at the August term of this court to have two freeholders appointed to apportion her dower

Ordered by the Court that Joseph HAM be appointed overseer of the road of 2d Class in the place of G R BIFFLE and that he have the hands in the same bounds to work under his direction Isued July 25th 1850

Came James ANDERSON who was at a former term of this Court appointed Administrator of all and singular the goods & Chattles rights and credits of Jesse COPELAND dec’d and suggested in writing the Insolvency of said estate it is therefore ordered by the Court that such publication be given as in by law in such cases required and that notice be given to all person having Claims against said estate to file them with the Clerk of this Court by the first day of January net duly authenticated as the law directs for prorate distribution[sic] or they will be forever barred

Whitehead Cemetery

LOCATION: To reach the Whitehead cemetery, from the Courthouse Square in Waynesboro, travel highway 64 east for 1.2 miles. Turn left onto highway 99 and go 2.5 miles to the Wayne County Memory Gardens. Continue on highway 99 by turning left at Memory Gardens and travel 4 miles. Turn left again at the Topsy Fire Station onto Topsy Road and go 2.6 miles and turn left at the Topsy Store onto Topsy Store Road. Go .6 miles and turn right onto Whitehead Cemetery Road (a dirt road) and go .2 miles to the cemetery.

This cemetery only has one or two unknown graves. The cemetery is very well kept and has room for many more graves.

Mt. Pleasant Cemetery

This cemetery is located two to three miles east of Cypress Inn, Tennessee on highway 227 (Pumping Station Rd).

This cemetery is owned by the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church and maintained by descendants of those buried here and once or twice a year, inmates from the Clifton Tennessee Detention Facility clean the grounds. There are several graves that are marked only with rocks and no information on them. The oldest grave that has a marker has a birth date of 1810. Most of the ones marked with rocks are probably much older. There are three known Civil War Veterans buried here. A Nancye Neighbors listed in this file is said to be the first white person buried here according to historian Grace Carver. Several slaves were believed to be buried here first.

The church owns approximately five acres including the church grounds and cemetery. The cemetery area is presently being expanded.

The Clifton City Cemetery lies between Main Street and the new highway #114. To reach the cemetery, travel Main Street into Clifton, turning left onto Elm Street. Travel through two 4-way-stops for .3 mile. Turn left onto Walnut Street and travel .2 mile. The cemetery is on the hill. This enumeration was done in sections. Section “A” was enumerated row-by-row starting on the first row near the large pine tree and going south. This section is located on the immediate right traveling up the hill. Section “B” & “C” were regretfully done in alphabetical order due to random grave locations especially in section “B”. This enumeration was completed March 21, 2011

To all who shall see these Presents, and more especially to the Sheriff of Wayne Co. Superintendent and Warden of the Penitentiary Greeting:

Whereas, At the November Term 18 1900 of the Circuit Court for our County of Wayne Tom May was convicted of Disturbing Public Worship and sentenced to undergo confinement for the term of Six months in Jail and $50.00 fine and costs in one case and $50.00 fine and costs in another.

And Whereas, The said Tom May has been recommended to me as a fit subject for Executive clemency: Defendant May was convicted at the Nov. Term of the Circuit Court of Wayne Co. 1900 in two cases and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment and fine of $50.00 and costs in one case and $50.00 fine and costs in the other. He has served more than the jail sentence imposed upon him is poor and unable to pay the remainder of the fine. Judge Holding and Atty Gen’l Boyd who tried the cause together with County officials, leading citizens and a number of the church members of the congregation where the offense was committed all urge his pardon on the ground that he has been sufficiently punished and that the object of the law has thereby been obtained. In view of these petitions and the representations made by the officials trying the cause I grant the pardon of the fine.

Now, Therefore, I, BENTON McMILLIN, Governor as aforesaid, by virtue of the power and authority in me vested, do hereby PARDON the said Tom May of the said Offense, so far as relates to the term of imprisonment yet unexpired fines in each case but in no other way interfering with the judgment and sentence of said Court; and I do further authorize and direct that the said Tom May be forthwithliberated and put at large relieved of the fines in each case.
