Shelton, Claude Nathaniel

SHELTON, Claude Nathaniel, was born 24 March 1897, the son of Allen D. SHELTON, b. 12 Feb 1865, d. 4 Jan 1946, buried Cromwell Crossroads Cemetery, and Adeline GRIMES, b. March 1864. Claude was inducted into the Army on 30 Aug 1918 and discharged on 22 Mar 1919. He spent most of his service in El Paso, TX at Camp Boyd.

He married Clura BECKHAM in 1923 and they had three children. Colene who married Harold RASBURY, Fannie Lou PHILLIPS and James Ray SHELTON. Claude died 9 July 1979. His brothers were Richard Lee SHELTON, b. Aug 1884; David SHELTON, b. Oct 1886; Franklin SHELTON, and Arch SHELTON, b. Oct 1895. His sisters were Mary Bell FRANKS, b. Jan 1890; Catherine YOUNG, b. July 1891; Emma YOUNG, b. Aug 1892; Parlee NOWLIN, b. March 1894 and Alice NEILL, b. Sep 1897.

Shelton, Arch

SHELTON, Arch, was born 8 Oct 1895. He enlisted on 5 Sep 1917 and was discharged 24 Jan 1918. He was a private in Co. C, 322nd Infantry. He was a teamster and farmer.

Arch SHELTON was the son of Allen D. SHELTON (12 Feb 1865 – 4 Jan 1946) and Eliza Adeline GRIMES (2 Mar 1864 – 23 July 1902).

Arch married Beulah PIGG and they had eight children: Earline SHELTON DANIEL; Maurice SHELTON; Leland SHELTON, Sammy SHELTON, Tommy SHELTON, Sue SHELTON PERKINS, David SHELTON, and Jane SHELTON PINKERTON.

Arch SHELTON died 11 Oct 1957 and was buried at Cromwell Crossroads Cemetery. His wife, Beulah, was born 14 Nov 1898 and died 22 Mar 1966 and is also buried at Cromwell Crossroads Cemetery.

Arch SHELTON’s siblings were Lee, Dave, Bell, Emma, Parilee, Claude and Alice.

Sealy, Rudolph

Rudolph SealySEALY, Rudolph, HQ Co., 56th US Infantry, also Co. H, 56th Infantry. Inducted 5 July 1917, date of discharge not given. He served overseas, crossing the Atlantic on the Carpathia. He spent 14 days crossing. At his enlistment he was a farmer.

For sometime SEALY had been helping Mr. Harrison SKELTON on Green River farm, occasionally visiting his parents back in Lewis County, near Hohenwald. He soon became an integral part socially in the nearby communities of Mr. Hope, Topsy, and Moccasin. His parents were close friends to Isaac and Ona Lova “Babe” EDWARDS. When the US declared war on Germany, Rudolph was in the first group of volunteers from Wayne County. When the Armistice was signed, he re-enlisted with the US Special Group of Army to stay in France to help protect that country. He married and French girl and lived in France.

Scott, Robert

SCOTT, Robert, serial number 4445360 Pct. Inf, Draft HQ, Nashville, TN. Born Waynesboro, TN and was 23 years and 2 months old at time of induction, by occupation a farmer. He is described as having blue eyes, brown hair, medium complexion and was 5′ 8″ tall. He was inducted on 3 September 1918 at Waynesboro, TN and was discharged at Camp Greenleaf, GA on 20 Dec 1918. No other information submitted.

Scott, Morty Alison

SCOTT, Morty Alison, serial number 1,33,870 W, served Pvt., Co. A, 319th MG BN and Ord. C. Born Maury Co., TN and was 28� years old at time of induction. Inducted Waynesboro, Tn on 2 September 1917 and honorably discharged on 12 June 1919. No other information available.

Schmittou, Rudolph S.

Rudolph S. SchmittouSCHMITTOU, Rudolph S., serial number 1,919,883W, 1st Corporal, Co. B, 307th Amm. Tr., was born 24 December 1892 at Louise, Montgomery County, TN. He died 11 May 1967 at Topsy, Wayne Co., TN and is buried in the Durham Cemetery. He enlisted on 13 November 1917 at Allens Creek, Wayne Co., TN as a private. He was honorably discharged on 24 May 1919 at Ft. Oglethorpe, GA and given $89.22 for travel expenses home. He was a farmer and a railroad fireman.

He was the son of Francis SCHMITTOU and Newel GREEN, natives of Montgomery County, Tennessee.

During the war he served in the Marbache Sector, St. Miehel Sector and the Meuse Argonne Offensive from 25 June to 9 Nov 1918. He hauled ammunition to the front lines.

He came home on a furlough on 24 Feb 1918 and married Mae EDWARDS SCHMITTOU. He had one step-daughter, Juanita SCHMITTOU MEREDITH.

His siblings were Betty BAGGETT of Louise, TN; Aletha BAGGETT of Clarksville, TN; Richard SCHMITTOU, Alec SCHMITTOU, Albert SCHMITOU, Rayborn SCHMITTOU, Levi SCHMITTOU, Will SCHMITTOU and Marvin SCHMITTOU.

Schmittou, Albert Francis

SCHMITTOU, Albert Francis, serial number 1,884,859, Corporal Battery D 317 Field Artillery, was bornAlbert Schmittou February 12th, 1889 at Louise in Montgomery County, Tennessee. He died March 25th, 1985 at Lewis County Nursing Home and is buried in the Dickson Cemetery. He enlisted April 27th, 1918 in Dickson County, Tennessee and served with the 156 Deport Brigade until May 25th, 1918. From May 26th, 1918 to June 15th, 1919 he served with the Battery D 317 Field Artillery. One position he was known to have held was that of Stable Sergeant. He was promoted to Private First Class on July 1st, 1918 and to Corporal on September 1st, 1918. He served in France from August 7th, 1918 to June 8th, 1919 with specific places unknown. He was honorably discharged June 15th, 1919. He re-enlisted October 8th, 1919 in Waynesboro, Tennessee and was honorably discharged October 7th, 1920. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas during his second tour of duty. Some occupations he held were steam shovel operator, farmer, carpenter, law officer, railroad construction worker and powder man for the state of Tennessee highway department.

He was the son of Francis Schmittou and Newell Green, natives of Montgomery County, Tennessee.

His siblings were Betty Baggett of Louise, Tennessee, Aletha Baggett of Clarksville, Tennessee, Richard Schmittou, Alec Schmittou, Rudolph Schmittou, Rayborn Schmittou, Levi Schmittou, Will Schmittou and Marvin Schmittou.

He was married to Gladys Louise Whitson and had two sons, four daughters and many grandchildren. His children are Thomas W. Schmittou, Albert C. Schmittou, Ida N. Skelton, Betty Francis Daughtry, Celia Tidwell and Carolyn Sue Nixon.

Rose, James Edgar

James E. RoseROSE, James Edgar, Serial number 1841745, was born on August 25, 1895 in Hardin Co., TN and spent his first 24 years in Wayne Co., TN. James was the son of George W. ROSE and Hannah PRATER. On August 8, 1917, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S. Saint Louis transporting men to and from Europe. James received an honorable discharge on August 6, 1919.

On November 5, 1922, he married Ercle L. NOWLIN, the daughter of John NOWLIN and Dorothy Elizabeth HELTON. After his marriage he moved with his wife and son daughter to Lee Co., AR. Their daughter, Audrey M. ROSE SYLVESTER, was born in Tennessee, followed by Juanita ROSE WALKER, Betty Jean ROSE BISHOP, and John F. ROSE who were born in Lee Co., Arkansas.

James Edgar died on October 9, 1958 in the Memphis, TN VA hospital and was buried at the LaGrange Cemetery in LaGrange, Arkansas, along side his wife, mother and father.

Luther Allen RobersonROBERSON, Luther Allen, was born Feb 1889 and died 21 July 1970. He was the son of Thomas Allen and Sarah Frances Montgomery ROBERSON. He married on 12 Oct 1919 in Cloverdale, Lauderdale County, Alabama to Minnie Lee WRIGHT. Their children were
