Pyle’s Cemetery 2010
Located between Glen Eden Road, Timberlake Lane, Stagecoach Road and Green Spring Circle in Kingsport. The cemetery is best accessed by Trinity Lane, off Memorial Blvd (Highway 126).
There were two death certificates found for persons interred here that indicated they were buried in “Preston’s Cemetery.” Both references were around 1920. The following article was found in the Kingsport Times News, 14 Nov 1926: “Neal Moody and family have moved to the old Pyle house on the Preston farm near the cemetery.”
The cemetery holds many unmarked graves and graves marked only by field stones. It was virtually impossible to keep the cemetery in a row/grave order. There are also a number of tombstones with inscriptions now too worn to read.
Intermingled in the transcription are those buried in the cemetery in unmarked graves. I gathered information from obits, old transcriptions, death certificates, family information, etc. I checked each obit against the person’s death certificate, if I were able to find it. The “Comments” section contains the source information for each unmarked grave. “1976 census” indicates that a census of the cemetery was done in 1976 and the grave had some type of marker, which was not found in 2010 by our team. There was a transcription on this website from Dorothy and Ruth Wexler’s research, submitted by Kermit L. Pyle. I took the information from their records and attempted to verify the burials by either a death certificate or an obituary. These submissions are marked by “Wexler notes.”

With regard to the Pyles Cemetery listing for Adeline Shipley, I’m not 100% sure of her first and middle names, but I have her maiden name as Adelia Louise Smith. Her obituary, published in the Tuesday, November 23, 1920 edition of the Kingsport Times, reflected her name as Adelia Shipley and also reflected that she was the former Adelia Smith. Her parents were Lafayette and Anise (or Anice) Carr Smith. She was the wife of Elmer Gilbert Shipley, who is interred at Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol.

With regard to the Will I. Shipley interred in the Pyles Cemetery, he is the son of Enoch Howard and Mary Ellen Carter Shipley.
His first name has to be just a guess by anyone who didn’t personally know him, and I didn’t. Census data reflects it as Wilbert (1900), Wilbur (1910)and Wilbur (1920), etc. The Social Security Applications and Claims index for Will, his wife, Lena, and one of their sons, Robert Bruce Shipley, all reflect his first name as Wilbur. The Kingsport Times April 21, 1923 edition, however, announced the wedding of Wilmer Shipley and Miss Lena Hobbs on 17 April of that year. The place wasn’t specified, but I suspect it was somewhere in Sullivan County. They had a second son named Roy. At least, Will fits nicely with all of those first name possibilities.
Although I haven’t found a final divorce decree, legal notices (Order of Publication) published in the Kingsport newspapers indicate that Lena probably divorced him in the 1929/1930 time frame. The 1930 and 1940 censuses reflect Lena as a housekeeper in the household of Alonzo (Lonzo) T. Kilgore. Both Robert and Roy were with her in those censuses. Will’s middle name is definitely Ivan.

The Henry Godsey in this Pyles Cemetery listing is Henry G. Godsey. In about 1875, he married Lucinda K. Galloway, daughter of Marshall and Lavina Looney Hull Galloway. Lucinda died before 9 Jun 1900, the date of the 1900 census. I suspect she is buried in the Old Baptist Church Cemetery, near the Netherland Inn, where her parents are buried. Per the notice of Henry’s death, published in the Tuesday, July 27, 1920 edition of the Kingsport Times, Henry died on Friday, July 23, 1920 and was buried at Pyles Cemetery on Sunday, July 25, 1920.
I should also have said that the death and burial dates reflected in the newspaper are each 1 week after the death and burial dates reflected in his death certificate.
