HICKAM, Edley (1874)
Died of Typhoid fever, in Scott county, Va., on the 24th inst., Edley HICKAM. Aged twenty-three years and eleven months.
In paying a tribute to the memory of this young man we can strictly, and truthfully comply with that ancient maxim, that bids us say nothing of the dead but what is good. In every relation of life he was guided by that high sense of honor that characterizes the true gentleman. He was a kind and obedient son, an affectionate brother, a true and devoted friend. He was an earnest seeker after useful knowledge, which combined with his excellent moral character, marked him as a rising young man, destined for a life of usefullness [sic]. But the inscrutable wisdom of the Almighty has removed him from this earth and we should bow in humble submission to His holy will.
During his last illness Edley suffered much, but no murmur escaped his lips; in his last moments, on the threshold of eternity, he exclaimed “O what an entrance, what an entrance.” We can fondly hope from his pious life, and many virtues, that it was a glorious entrance into that peaceful haven of eternal rest. — A.P.H.
