How to Find Information

In Tennessee, the deeds, wills and marriage records are handled by different departments within the courthouse, and are not all inclusive in the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office as in Virginia.

The library has 400 microfilm rolls of courthouse records through 1950. The library also features a newly-remodeled Genealogy Room with hundreds of books, including several three-ring binders with copies of obituaries. Contact Theresa, the library director for additional information.

Opened in 2004, the Sullivan County Archives welcomes historical and genealogical researchers. Its primary focus is to preserve county governmental records and to serve as a regional research center for history and genealogy.  The Research Center is home to the Sullivan County Historical and Genealogical Society (link to their Facebook page.)  It is located next door to the old Sullivan County Courthouse on Highway 126 in historic downtown Blountville. The Department of Health has Tennessee death, divorce and marriage records for the years 1957-2007. Fees are as follows:

Births: $15.00 for first copy and $2.00 for each additional copy of the same record. For births from 1949 to present a computer generated copy can be obtained for $5.00 with each additional copy $2.00. Both types are certified and include a raised, embossed seal.

Deaths: $5.00 per certified copy. The cause of death is not normally included on a certified copy unless specifically requested and then is available only to certain family members or legal representatives.

Marriage and Divorce Records: $10.00 for the first copy and $2.00 for each additional copy.

Fees include a search the year before and the year after the requested record date. If no record is found in the search, you will be notified by mail. The fee is not refunded as it is charged for the search.
