This was where the Shipley/Snapps Ferry was located in the 1800’s. It was located approximately 100 yards upstream of the Interstate 81 bridge across Fort Patrick Henry Lake. In 1782, Alexander Cavett received a land grant from the state of North Carolina for this property. Two years later, the east bank of the ferry land was granted to James Smith. In 1790, Cavett sold 100 acres of his grant to Conrad Shipley, who sold it to Lawrence Snapp, Jr. eighteen years later. Meanwhile, James Smith, who owned the east landing site of the ferry, sold his grant to Jonathan Phillips, who sold it to Samuel Shipley, who then sold it to Phillip Snapp. Now the Snapp Brothers owned the property on both the east and west banks of the ferry landings. The Snapps must have had some financial problems, as both pieces of property were sold by the sheriff to John and Peter Parsons who sold it to Joshua Shipley in 1829. From this point on, it was known as Shipley’s Ferry.
