Thank you for your post. I am a 76 year old Presbyterian who was Christened as an infant in the Old 1st Presbyterian Church at the corner of 5th & Shelby. The post card you show is the best picture I have found of the Church. Is there any possibility that you could e-mail me, as an attachment, a higher resolution copy of the post card. Of course I would also appreciate any other pictures of the original church.
You might also be interested to know that my research has verified that the first church in Sullivan County, of any denomination, was New Providence Presbyterian Church in Surgoinsville (now Hawkins County). My great, great, great, great grandfather, George Maxwell, was the founding trustee, who returned to Augusta County (Staunton) Virginia to recruit Sam Doak, who had just graduated from Princeton, to be the first pastor. This, of course, led to the founding of twelve other churches and Tusculum College, although Sam is best known for his sermon at Sycamore Shoals before the Battle of King’s Mountain, where George Maxwell commanded the Carter’s Valley Militia under Isaac Shelby.
