Carney, Nell WORTHINGTON 14 Dec 1895 – 19 April 1984
Carney, Nell Worthington, 88, of Route 4, Dayton, Tenn., died Thursday at her residence. A former schoolteacher, she was employed by the Dayton Herald and the Chattanooga News-Free Press. A member of Old Washington Baptist Church, she was involved in its music ministry and was a Sunday school teacher for 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Carney. Survivors include five sons, Warren and Charles Carney, both of Dayton, Walter Agnew Carney, Jacksonville, Ark., Bryan Carney, Pottervillle, Mich., and Doyle Carney, Albertville, Ala.; four daughters, Ethel Marler, Harrison, Mich., Helen DeVault, Laingsburg, Mich., Irene Thornburg, Red Band, and Imogene Harris, Dayton; three stepdaughters, Bertha Worthington, Dayton, Bonnie Bethune, Henagar, Ala., and Cleo Messer, Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Charlie, Jack and Walter Worthington, all of Battle Creek, Mich; two sisters, Gladys Burdette, Flint, Mich., and Clara Smith, Red Bank; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Old Washington Baptist Church with the Rev. J.L. Gates officiating. Burial will be in Montgomery Cemetery in the Old Washington community. Memorial contributions may be made to the music department of Old Washington Baptist Church. The family is receiving friends at Sawyer’s Funeral Service, Dayton.
