ASSID, Charles (1906)

Harriman, Tenn. – July 26 – News reached Harriman this morning of the finding of the dead body of Chas. ASSID in the woods about two miles south of Evansville [sic], Rhea County, yesterday. Two bullet holes in the body told the tale of his ending. ASSID was a Syrian peddler, and operated from Rockwood. He left that place July 9 to be gone two weeks. Failing to return at the end of this time, search was instituted, which resulted in the finding of his body as stated above. ASSID’s route was traced from Rockwood to the point where he was found. Here it was learned that he was last seen in the company of Charles SWAFFORD, a well known character of that section. Late in the evening of the day the two men were seen together SWAFFORD is alleged to have displayed a quantity of goods such as the peddler was known to have carried. Nothing has been seen of SWAFFORD since, and officers are trying to locate him. He has often been in trouble. There is considerable excitement in the neighborhood over the tragedy. Chas. SWAFFORD was arrested at his father’s home about eighteen miles north of Pikeville by Sheriff J.S. FRAZIER and Deputy Sheriff F.J. PAYNE Friday. (pg. 1)
