LOT 224. CSA
One of the two Confederate burial lots in Riverside Cemetery and the smallest in the number of graves. Many years ago small, vertical, numbered stone markers inscribed "C.S.A." were placed at these graves. As some of the markers had beer damaged they were replaced with small flat stones also inscribed "C.S.A." in the 1950s. In 1937, Ingram James reported the presence in this lot of thirty-five stones "marked C.S.A." A monument in the center of the lot, erected by the local United Daughters of the Confederacy, states that 40 burials are in this lot. Barring expertly conducted probing to determine just how many graves MAY be in this lot that number remains an open question. Why there are two Confederate burial lots in Riverside is unknown. It may be that some of the soldiers who died in the military hospital in Jackson early in the war and those who fell in area skirmishes were buried in this lot. The dead of the Sixth Tennessee Infantry, the Confederates from this area, who fell in the battle of Shiloh in April 1862 were evidently buried in the trenches on and near the battlefield. Two of that regiment, Joe B. Freeman and Isaac Jackson were mortally wounded and died while being carried home to Jackson. Freeman is buried among his wife's Carruthers kindred in Riverside. The location of Jackson's grave in Riverside is now unknown but his remains may rest among his compatriots in Lot 224. The larger Confederate burial lot, located on the south slope of the cemetery contains at least a few of those men killed at

Britton Lane in September 1862. Jackson was occupied by the Federals from June 1, 1862-June 1, 1863 and was thereafter in the territory claimed by the Federals for the duration of the Civil War. Other Confederates are buried in Riverside. The sexton's report to the city council, April 14, 1869 mentions that the remains of Captain Chandler of the Kentucky Volunteers, CSA, were removed from the Reverend Cohn McKinney's lot sometime in the past month. It is the domain of those versed in local Confederate history, not an opinionated genealogist to offer viable explanations as to the Confederate graves and burial lots in Riverside Cemetery.
