RIVERSIDE CEMETERY, JACKSON, TENNESSEE
ADDENDUM XCompiled by Jonathan K. T. Smith, August 2004
Transcribed by Laurel Baty, October 2004
Edited for HTML by David DonahueIn the May 4, 2003 tornado Riverside Cemetery took a "direct hit," at which time many tombstones were toppled and/or shattered. In making a survey for tombstone restoration in the cemetery, members of the Jackson city planning department, using Jonathan Smith's survey, found additional graves formerly overlooked and errors in names/dates. Jonathan Smith reviewed these alterations and, in agreement with them, offers this additional listing, including his "updates" of burials since the Riverside Cemetery book was published by him in 1998. (The damaged tombstones of 2003 had been repaired by the late summer of 2004 with the exception of the Allison-Dudley mausoleum which had been irreparably damaged. The remains in this mausoleum were slated to be re-niched in a proposed replacement mausoleum.)
Riverside Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 9, 2003.

Mrs. BETTY LOU HALL, Dec. 13, 1916-Jan. 31, 2001NOTE:
The registration papers prepared for the nomination of Riverside Cemetery for placement on the NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES, submitted Nov. 21, 2002, are very competently presented. One error on the "Continuation Sheet," section 7, page 11, repeats an error corrected years ago by Miss Emma Inman Williams in her HISTORIC MADISON, namely identifying JOHN L. H. TOMLIN (died 1905), a prominent Jackson, Tennessee lawyer, with the actual correspondent of Edgar Allen Poe, namely JOHN TOMLIN, who lived for a number of years in Jackson. This mistaken case of identification has been repeated many times despite irrefutable research conducted years ago dispelling it.
