1845 Petition to Divide at the River

1845 Petition to divide Perry County at the Tennessee River
Contributed by:  Renea Burkholder

The following petitions can be found on microfilm at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville, Tennessee. The original petitions are also available. These are part of Record Group 260, Acts of the 26th Tennessee General Assembly.

Although added by the archivists, the page numbering is included to aid you in location on the original documents.  I have tried to transcribe the spelling of names as they are on the document. Some are more difficult to read than others due to either handwriting, partial coverage by another signature, or fading. I have kept the signatures in the same order as they are on the document.

127-1845-2

The Honorable Pres. general assembly of the State of Tennessee.

The undersigned citizens of the County of Perry and state of Tennessee would respectfully represent to your honorable body that a very large portion of the citizens in consequence of the Tennessee River running through the county are placed in a situation well calculated to enlist the sympathies of all who are acquainted with their condition and the undersigned entertain the belief that it needs only to have their cause fairly represented to your Honbl  body assembled for the general welfare of the peoople to secure their cooperation with their representatives to effect a division of Perry County making Tennessee River the line. The undersigned are fully persuaded that they ask nothing more than that relief which can be honorably and constitutionally extended to them thereby conferring a kindness and blessing upon them and afflicting an injury upon none.

And further the undersigned would state that the citizens residing on the east side of Ten River are compelled to submit to a constant _______ and unjust tax for ferriages in attending courts said which is oppressive in the extreme besides the risk of their personal safety. The undersigned would further represent that the ( 127-1845-3) west side of the river cordially sympathises with their fellow citizens of the east of Tennessee River in said county and cordially unite with them in praying your Honorable body to extend to them that relief which common justice demands.

The undersigned further take pleasure in stating that this is a question relieved of everything of a political character and that the people of the county of all parties sexes and conditions will f[or]ever cherish towards those who minister to their necessities a greatful rememberence.

2 Replies to “1845 Petition to Divide at the River”

  1. I have a 1913 death certificate for my gg-grandmother from Tupelo, Lee Co. MS. She died where both her daughters lived. Her birth place is listed as Perry Co. Tennessee. Also states her mother was born in Perry Co. but no name given. Her father is listed as Ezra Churchill born in Germany. My gg-grandmother was born 1850 and her name was Martha Jane Churchill. She married abt 1872 somewhere in TN to a Mr. Miles, who died by 1880. They had 2 daughters. No records ever found on Mr. Miles. Marriage not found. She remarried in 1892 in Iuka, MS to a Wm Woodall of Decatur, Morgan Co. AL. One daughter married a John Ledbetter of Tupelo and the other married Ernest Lee Dunn and they went to Texas. Find a David Churchill in Perry Co. only on a 1837 tax list – no census and William Churchill on 1845 petition to divide Perry Co. Neither are any census, nor marriages.
Looking for any information on Martha and her parents.
