  • This is a photograph of my Obion County grandfather and great-grandparents taken about 1893 or 1894, judging by the ages of the children.
  • Seated, with his youngest son on his lap is Waller Bright Walker.
  • Standing is Florence Ellen McCorkle Walker, wife of Waller Bright Walker.
  • The child standing on the right (in front of his mother) is my grandfather, Harry Grady Walker.
  • The child on the lap of Waller Bright Walker, is Waller Owen Walker.

 

 

Additional Information:

  • Waller Bright Walker, born January 12, 1863 was a son of James B. Walker and Selena Jane Westmoreland Walker. Waller Bright Walker died of typhoid September 25, 1902, leaving a young widow and two sons, ages 12 and 10.
  • Waller’s father – James B. Walker served as Sheriff of Obion County from 1867 to 1869.
  • Florence Ellen McCorkle Walker, was a daughter of David Purviance McCorkle (1830-1884) and Elizabeth “Betty” Jackson Amis McCorkle, all of Obion County.
  • Florence’s mother – Elizabeth “Betty” Jackson Amis McCorkle was a daughter of Gilliam Jackson, of Obion County.
  • Florence remarried widower Charles Brown of Obion County who had several daughters and subsequently Florence had another son by him, also named Charles Brown.
  • Harry Grady Walker (born 1889 and died 1952) fought in WWI, and became a musician and furniture store owner in Memphis after the war. He fell in love with Vaudeville musician Hazel M. Gwinnup when she appeared on stage and he was playing in the orchestra pit. They married and raised four children in Memphis, with frequent trips home to visit Obion County.
  • Waller Owen Walker (born 1892 and died 1960 in Obion County) married Ruby Mitchell of Dyer County. Waller Owen Walker and Ruby had one daughter Jane, who married John Turner.

This photo is “widow” Florence Ellen McCorkle Walker with her sons, Harry Grady Walker (my grandfather) on the left and Waller Owen Walker on the right, taken within a year or two of their husband and father’s death in 1902. Harry would have been twelve or thirteen and Owen would have been ten or eleven.

  1. Walker, Blanton Lee Mar 20 1895 Oct 21 1921 Any information or are related to this person. He is my wife’s grandmothers first husband.
