Old Republican Cemetery — 3 Comments

  1. I am asking how the Old Republican Cemetery got its name located on Hwy 22 outside Union City toward Reelfoot Lake. Please make me knowledgeable of these facts.
    Thank you,
    Pat M. Curd

    • From “Road Less Travelled: Self-Guided Tours to Historic Sites and Scenic Areas in Obion County”, by Mr. Bill Threlkeld and Mr. Rebel Forrester: “Contrary to what might seem obvious, this is not a cemetery for old Republicans! There is no connection Republican Party, which was founded in 1854. The name is apparently derived from the definition of the word as a group of people united in a single cause. Church records reveal that on October 29th, 1848, a group of 19 persons banded together and agreed to ‘live together as Christians at Republican Meetinghouse’ and to ‘give themselves to each other and to the Lord.’ This was the first Church of Christ in Obion County.”

The Old Republican Church building is still there, (I don’t know when the current building was built) but it now goes by New Hope Bible Church. The cemetery is right across the road, still maintained very well and in use. I’ve been told that a landslide occurred near the back of the cemetery at one point, causing several graves to cave in. I don’t know when this occurred or how many stones were affected.

  2. My husband and I live in this area and are starting the process of purchasing
a couple grave sites. Could you please let us know what’s available/
