HomeMethodist, Elbridge

The Methodist Church at Elbridge, Tennessee first met in a log building with a ground floor and split logs as benches. No history of the early old building is available and it is believed it burned during forest fires.

In 1852, J. C. Davidson deeded about five acres to the Elbridge Methodist Church as a donation from the deceased Dr. Carroll. The frame building under construction was demolished by a storm and the members rebuilt and dedicated the building New Chapel. This building was replaced while R. L. Norman was minister in 1897. The 1885-86 register, oldest found, placed New Chapel in the Dyersburg district. It was later placed on the Obion Circuit.

In 1900 four churches formed the Elbridge Circuit of the Union City District: New Chapel, Minnick, Zion and Cunningham. Also, the members of the circuit supplied a parsonage by subscription until 1914 when it was replaced by a new minister’s home.
